I think you have to look specifically at the concussions and how they occurred.

    1. First concussion occurred in Week 15 of the 2012 season against the Washington Redskins. I would be slightly concerned about this one because he took TWO hits in this game that were direct helmet-to-helmet hits and each of them easily could have produced a concussion. It makes me wonder if he actually took a concussion with the first hit and then the second one is the one that put him over the top to where he had to leave the game. The first was in the red zone and he lined up attached to the line as a second tight end to that side, ran up and blocked a linebacker then released on an out route into the flat, caught the ball, and had CB DeAngelo Hall come down hard on him. Cameron got low into the contact to try and break the tackle, and he ducked his head too low, DeAngelo Hall did the exact same, and it created the helmet-to-helmet hit. I don't know that you see a lot of these anymore because the league has come down hard on them (see third concussion). But the hit that actually saw him leave the field was one where he was attached, ran a medium depth out route underneath the shell, then turned and ran up the sidelines. As he ran up the sidelines he stiff-armed Reed Doughty and again got low, and as he did so Josh Wilson came in, laid his head down, and ear-holed Cameron into the sidelines. Again, the league has come down pretty hard on these hits but in 2012 they were still occurring more frequently without flags or fines.

    2. Second concussion occurred in Week 15 of the 2013 season against the Chicago Bears. He reported concussion symptoms on Monday following the game, and the head coach told the press he did not know on which play the concussion occurred. Looking at his catches in the game though, I think it's obvious it occurred on the very last drive in garbage time when the Browns were scoring a touchdown while down 17 points with less than a minute left. Cameron lined up in the slot a little detached from the formation and ran a short hook into the zone underneath the two nickel linebackers. He turned around, and LB Jon Bostic was coming down hard on him so he put his head down and dove for as much as he could get. Bostic hit him right on the back of the helmet, head-on collision. No other contact in the game comes close to giving Cameron a concussion, not even an instance of catching the ball and his head hitting the ground.

    3. The third concussion happened in late October of 2014 against the Oakland Raiders. It was a nasty hit by safety Brandian Ross (former Dolphin). Ross was flagged and penalized for the hit and probably got fined for it . Cameron caught the ball high over the middle, was going to the ground, Brandian Ross was coming on him against the grain, and straight up lowered his helmet and hit him on his way to the ground. It was a dirty play and it was immediately clear that Cameron took a concussion on the play.

So basically you look at Jordan Cameron's explanation that he believes the three hits that gave him the concussions were particularly bad and you have to see his point. All were helmet to helmet, something the NFL is trying to do away with. None involved just going to the ground and hitting his head on the ground. Two of them were situations usually only a tight end would run into based on the route he ran and the players coming down on him. One of those was a big time illegal hit that got flagged and likely fined.

Here is the play that gave him his first concussion:

How the concussions happened really doesn't matter.

The fact that they happened and are now more likely to happen again is the problem.

He is a mismatch for defenders and is a YAC machine.

    I hope he stays healthy!

Signing him was great. With his history, we still need to sign 1 more tall WR.

I know this makes it intuitively seem like you have to worry more, but we simply know so little about how the brain works that I wouldn't go down the route of saying "the hits were worse, so we have to worry more".

As long as he's functioning well now, that's really all that you can go on.

The one thing we do know about concussions is that getting one makes it easier to get others.

Huh? That wasn't my point. My point was that the hits were bad. He didn't take a concussion simply because he caught a ball and went to the ground and it jarred his head. He took concussions on bad helmet to helmet hits. The first and second concussions arguably would have been prevented by the new helmet he'll wear. As FFG said, the third concussion wouldn't have been prevented even if he'd been wearing a space helmet...which is why Brandian Ross got flagged and fined for that dirty hit.

I like this signing. If we also hang onto Clay, I think that makes this a very good FA period. I still have deep reservations about the cap hit we're going to take with Suh, and also about his character, but I like the fact they're cutting loose the dead weight and trying to improve. It's definitely more than we've seen in previous years. I just hope we hold onto Wallace and don't let him walk for nothing or a low round draft pick.

What's the point of saying "the hits were bad" if it's not telling us something about the damage he already has or the risk of damage in the future? You yourself said you were concerned about the first one.

So my point was the fact the hits looked bad doesn't tell us what kind of damage occurred, and it also doesn't tell us whether we should worry more about future concussions because the first ones looked bad.

here's the skinny on his deal:

Per a source with knowledge of the deal, Cameron will receive $5 million fully guaranteed on his two-year, $15 million contract, with $4 million to sign and a $1 million fully-guaranteed salary in 2015. The rest of his compensation for 2015 is tied to per-game roster bonuses. It’s a whopping $2.5 million, earned one game played at a time in the amount of $156,250 per game. So if he’s able to play, he cashes in — and the Dolphins become more likely to keep him around in 2016 at the other $7.5 million he’s due to be paid.

The hits being bad makes the concussions understandable.

When a guy reaches the point he's taking concussions just because he got slammed to the ground or fell awkwardly, that's bad news.

I like Cameron a lot, he is a top 5 player at his position if he is healthy. If we get 14+ games from him I think our offense will be much improved. He gives us that big target over the middle and in the red zone that you need to extend drives. His issues with concussions is troubling but I have to agree with CK, it starts to worry me if guys are getting concussed from simple everyday hits, anyone would get a concussion from a nasty helmet to helmet hit. As long as he isn't developing gator arms and isn't getting woosy from everyday hits he will be ok. And if he isn't then we didn't break the bank either. We needed another target on offense and we got one. I like the move.
