I think that he'll come in and compete with the young guys already on our roster for the spot across from Grimes. He's not young (28) but he's shown flashes and can hold his own. Made some plays for the Steelers last year.
Solid add. A while back I posted that I'd be really into it "if the Steelers were dumb enough to let him hit the market." Well...
Nice pickup for a nickel or dime defensive back but hopefully they find a CB who is better to start opposite Grimes.
He's small but extremely fast, agile, balanced and explosive. He's like Brent Grimes that way except faster. He initially played slot corner for the Texans in their nickel packages, as a rookie. That's when he got all those high marks from PFF. As they went on in Houston they added duties to what he was doing and he didn't always handle it well. The worst was really 2013 when he let up a bunch of touchdowns in single coverage. But he went to a new scheme in Pittsburgh, one that shares some things in common with our scheme, and he really rebounded very well. The tapes I watched, he was impressive. I think he probably is at his most iffy if you're having him play press-man against big receivers and then asking him to defend that receiver over distance with jump ball type situations. But Miami's scheme plays a lot of off-man to give corners a lot of aid in those situations, making them comfortable enough to knock down the pass. He had a couple of picks in Week 17 defending deep balls to A.J. Green where he took advantage this way. My feeling is he MIGHT be a revelation on the perimeter in Kevin Coyle's scheme, but even if not then he's a very adequate slot corner for your nickel packages, and that's the exact contract he's got from the Dolphins. He's paid like you'd pay a strickly nickel guy.
He is an upgrade from Jimmy Wilson. Helps add depth to a position of concern. And he came with a depth price tag. Which is a huge factor.
Biggest concerns I'd have would be him deep down the field against bigger receivers, and I'd have to look again to see how he is getting his body in to defend screens. If he can't do that then he won't be on the field, because Miami will see a lot of screens with guys like Suh and Wake able to rush the passer.
CK, you see Phins still pursuing Patrick Robinson as an option or think stay status quo with Grimes/Taylor/McCain as top guys?
To me it looks like they gave Brice McCain the contract that I saw being discussed for Patrick Robinson. That has the look of an either-or proposition.
The stats bear out that Brice McCain has been better in the slot than he has been on the outside. Over his career I have Brice McCain letting up from the slot: 1,423 yards 1,225 snaps 121 catches 202 attempts 8 touchdowns 5 interceptions And his best year from the slot was his last year (2014), a year he played in a new system that has some things in common with Miami's, so as a young ascending player he's intriguing. You're basically throwing the dice on low-cost guys. You're generally lucky if they pan out. It's like picking a guy in the 3rd round or something. More times than not, they don't pan out. But as far as low cost gambles go I like this guy. Maybe Patrick Robinson ends up better, I dunno.
With that height, slot would be the way to go. This cat can't cover the bigger outside WR's...period. Grimes is a giant next to him..smh
McCain was Sean Smith's teammate at Utah and in the same draft. One thing McCain did was post a helluva pro day workout: Dates: 03/09/09 Height: 5087 Weight: 185 40 Yrd Dash: 4.33 20 Yrd Dash: 2.51 10 Yrd Dash: 1.47 225 Lb. Bench Reps: 12 Vertical Jump: 36 1/2 Broad Jump: 10'03" 20 Yrd Shuttle: 3.99 3-Cone Drill: 6.74 The 40 time goes without saying, but the shuttle and cone times are excellent too. Not many players can do the shuttle in under 4.00 and any 3-cone under 7.00 is also impressive.
Yeah, I remember him in Houston being a very good slot guy, then fell out of favor. He did play very well for PITT last year. Those numbers are solid and especially improved considering what Jimmy Wilson was bringing to the table last year. My biggest concern is, what scheme are our DB's going to play with our DL pressuring the QB. Really hope it's not off man because opposing offenses will dink and dunk down the field for first downs.
SB Nation "What can Miami expect from McCain? Neal Coolong, the managing editor of Behind the Steel Curtain, SB Nation's outstanding Pittsburgh Steelers blog, was kind enough to give us an indepth look at a player who everyone expected to be a 2014 training camp body for the Steelers, but ended up starting for Pittsbugh and was a player the team wanted to re-sign. It seems the new rage among cornerbacks in the NFL is a one-year "Prove It" deal. Miami saw Brent Grimes translate a short post-injury contract into a big pay-day. Darrelle Revis did it with the Patriots last year and Brandon Flowersdid it with the Chargers. This isn't to say the Dolphins' newest cornerback, Brice McCain, is on the level of those players, but he took a low-end deal from the Steelers (1-year, $750,000) and parlayed it into a $5.5 million contract by betting on himself and winning. McCain earned a big extension from the Texans in 2011 after turning into one of the best slot cornerbacks in the league at a time the position was rising in importance. Like most of the rest of Houston's defense in 2012-13, McCain fell apart, and was eventually released. The Steelers are always looking for a combination of young, cheap and experienced in free agency, and in 2014, McCain fit the bill well. Dogged perhaps unfairly (like so many are) due to poor grades from Pro Football Focus, McCain wasn't seen as much more than a training camp body when he arrived at the Steelers' South Side facility last year. It turned out he would be the prize of a hyped 2014 free agency class for the Steelers. Outplaying much more prestigious players like Mike Mitchell, LeGarrette Blount and Lance Moore, we considered McCain to be a top priority in free agency this year. I would venture a guess that the Steelers offered McCain something around $4 million for two years. It's understandable why he chose the Dolphins' offer, and I think Miami improved as a team because of the signing. It certainly won't overshadow the big signing of Ndamukong Suh, but as Steelers' cornerbackCortez Allen (recipient of a big extension last offseason) collapsed as the year wore on, McCain filled in and played very well. Steelers fans should be glad I'm not running the team, but if I was, I would have made an emphasis on retaining McCain. When your nickel cornerback eventually overtakes and outplays your big-money starter, he should have a role on your team moving forward. A smart signing by the Dolphins and the Steelers are out shopping for another young, cheap and experienced cornerback."
