Quick Sunday night update: Sensing the Dolphins were potentially headed in this direction, agent Drew Rosenhaus said during his weekly segment on WSVN-Fox 7 that he asked the Dolphins to release Brian Hartline so that Hartline could go into the market and explore his options and also give the Dolphins an opportunity to re-sign him. Rosenhaus said the Dolphins have interest in re-signing Hartline and didn't rule it out. But as Armando Salguero noted, Hartline has interest in teams closer to his native Ohio and with an established quarterback, making the Colts an appealing option. Rosenhaus said he expects Hartline to sign somewhere this week. Rosenhaus, who does not represent Mike Wallace, also said he believes Wallace will remain with the Dolphins because the team needs him after releasing Hartline and Brandon Gibson. He said he feels that way even though he knows Miami is trying to trade him and also believes they have asked him to take a pay cut (which has been confirmed by people close to the situation). Browns would have been a natural fit IF they had a QB. No free agent WR in their right mind would want to go there, your numbers are going to suffer.
Established QB......LOLOLOL He obviously wants to goto Indy, they can pay him 5M and he can play with the best QB south of Aaron Rodgers for years to come. Don't blame him for that I suppose, may be a place he can catch 55-60 balls for 750 yards and 0 TDs.
I don't see it... but I don't know how the money aspect works. If we cut him and he has all that guaranteed money, wouldn't resigning him just add to that? Wouldn't it have made more sense to restructure (something he was reportedly open to do)? Not sure I believe anything from Drew.
I don't think that's how it works. Seems logical if you cut and resign to a new deal then it nets out to a restructuring of the old deal with less money.
Apparently the Dolphins accommodated Hartline, this way he can test the market early and see at what price level the Dolphins or any other team. I wouldn't doubt Rosenhaus all that much, imo he and Barry Jackson are two of the best sources for Dolphins news down here in sofla. Jackson on Sports Buzz and Rosenhaus on WSVN Sports Xtra, where he's been a contributor on the Sunday night show for quite a few years.
Assuming both players can be signed for salaries that are consistent with "depth" rather than "starter," Hartline and Gibson would be perfect backups on this team. Both are familiar with the offense and the quarterback, and Hartline can play both outside positions, while Gibson can play both in the slot and outside.
Although I agree, Hartline is just good enough to find a starting role somewhere. He won't stay here for less or even same money to be a backup. I'd rather not resign him so we HAVE to look at the draft or free agency to replace him and Gibson. Of the two I'd rather have Gibson back.
I don't think they would've cut both of them and taken the chance they'd sign elsewhere without having a plan to have neither of them a starter.
Exactly, which to me means we won't be offering what Hartline or Gibson feel is fair compensation. They're likely as good as gone.
Don't think there is a shot in hell Hartline is re-signed, we would've just offered him a pay cut and kept him to avoid this mess. I do wish Hartline the best, could see him a fit with the Browns/Colts/Bengals. Browns don't have established QB, but do have serious need at WR and could use a guy who will show up week to week. Colts, if Reggie is finished I could see that being a destination. They did just sign Duron Carter, have TY Hilton, and like their rookie Moncrief, if I was them I'd keep it youg and athletic around Luck, that team should progress very well. Hope we can copy their formula for their receiving corps through the draft. Bengals are a team I could see a good fit. Why? Well, Dalton always has lacked a #2 guy who can consistently be there. Marvin Jones and Mohammed Sanu are both better athletes than Hartline but neither have put together a full season healthy. Why not add Hartline as a veteran presence to be a security blanket. They've invested a lot in the draft at WR and don't see it as a major need a veteran FA might be just what the doctor ordered.
With Wayne a FA and recently ineffective and no one else behind Hilton, Indy might be very willing to pay Hartline. They've overspent before: Erik Walden Trent Richardson Gosder Cherilus LaRon Landry Gary Brackett Vontae Davis since he's getting paid about $10 million per season Arthur Jones
Mess as in why would the FO cut a player just to resign him when restructuring avoids the whole situation. Just be very confusing as to cut someone to resign them when a restructure is easier, cleaner, and more effective. Couldn't be happier that Hartline more importantly for money and lack of production. I think we can easily find a improved replacement for less money and more talent through the draft or FA. Who you looking for at WR upcoming Fin D?
Good point they do overspend, and very well could. But they do have Moncrief behind Hilton who produced only 30 fewer yards than Hartline this year on 7 less targets. Also, Duron Carter was pretty hyped coming from CFL and think they want to incorporate him sooner than later. There are options behind Hilton but you are definitely correct in saying they overspend and could very well do so.
If Drew is telling the truth, they released him because he wants more money and to play somewhere else. I'd take a shot at Shorts.
hartline is in no position to dictate where he goes..be grateful for the money you made cause it int gonna go down like that anymore. I wonder if he plans to pack on a few lbs of muscle this offseason.
Hartline didn't say Miami doesn't have an established QB, he says he'd prefer to go to a team with one. That doesn't preclude re-signing here but it does preclude him from Buffalo, NYJ, Cleveland, Washington, etc.
I don't think Hartline's comment about playing with an established QB was a slight against Tannehill. I believe he was just saying if he's going to another team, it'd rather be with an established quarterback than a rookie or a sorry veteran.
