Armando is calling a Dolphins roster purge. He posted this list six hours ago after the Hartline cut: LB Dannell Ellerbe. LB Phillip Wheeler. WR Mike Wallace -- although team is considering a pay cut or a trade. WR Brandon Gibson. G Nate Garner. CB Cortland Finnegan -- either that or he'll retire. DT Randy Starks. OL Shelley Smith. Gibson is now gone. Anyone care to agree, disagree, modify the list?
Garner should stay I'd think, I wouldnt be surprised if they cut Smith however. They didn't have a clear plan for him (shocking) and I'd expect them to not bother with him in the future.
This is akin to the daily purge I have every morning after consuming a cup of coffee. Feels so good and refreshing.
Yes.As much as fans may not like to hear this this year could be a transitional year where bad Ireland contracts are eliminated ,where players with trade value may be traded and where there will not be much free agent wheeling and dealing going on. There may be a plan in place to cleanup the joint for 2016 .Philbin and Coyle are not likely to survive this .Lazor might in some capacity. Obxviously I am speculating and I am not privvy to any insider info on this occasion.
completely fine with me, we weren't making the playoffs this year anyway....might as well set everything up nicely for our new coach and GM in 2016
I'd keep Starks and Don't think Wallace will be cut until next year. The rest of the list should be cut with the addition of Fields. Might also be time to explore Dion Jordan trade value. Not convinced Coyle and Philbin will ever figure out how to use him properly. I still have faith in him as a player though, so maybe there are other franchises out there who would still pay a price for him.
Nate Garner is making a lot of money for a guy that no one seems to want to trust even as a primary back-up at any position.
I'd keep Jordan for one more year and see whether they can make it work with him as a LB. At least I think that's more prudent than trading him before that experiment.
Even if that new coach is Eric Mangini who's buddy buddy with the guy who will probably take over (if he hasnt officially already) at GM in Mike Tannenbaum? Miami dolphins... Miami Dolphins... Miami Dolphins # 1.... Not saying its going to happen, but... think about it... the chances of it are pretty good at this point the way things are setting up.
Keep Garner (cheap insurance) Maybe Starks and Wallace (tricky situation) I don't know any of those other players...
So if we can see it ----does Philbin?? Then I think to the Sparano and Harbough stab. If this is true Ross is going to develop a reputation as a back stabber
Based on that list of players, and if you include Wallace, Hartline, and Gibson, it sounds like Mike Tannenbaum's first order of business, with his analytics emphasis, was to determine whose salary wasn't justified by his play.
I'm shocked Ellerbe's name hasn't been tossed into the purge bucket at a base salary of $8.245 million I'd be shocked if he's with us this season Sorry someone pointed out to me he was #1 on the first list...my bad
Smith is a terrific run blocker who struggles in pass pro. If we ever decide to run the ball more than 38% of the time he will come in handy.
The problem I have with this thought is that the players we're releasing aren't anything special. If we were getting rid of Grimes and Wake and not preparing to re-sign Clay and Pouncey than I could see a transitional/rebuilding year. I guess we'll see what happens but so far this just seems like purging unspectacular players with bloated salaries.
There are still some bloated salaries on the books, notice has been served though. Guys may take a different attitude towards taking a pay cut after today.
Ellerbe is certainly getting the ax. It's just a matter of time and there will be others too. This is what we should be doing. Exiling players who aren't playing up to their salaries and taking caring of our own young studs (Tannehill, Clay, Pouncey, etc.)
I've been calling for that (other than Wallace) since before the season ended. They are all no-brainers as all of those were under-performers and not very good quality contributors (Other than Wallace who was a very good contributor but not up to his contract level). It brings us well under the cap and I like it. I do think a couple could be designated as post-June 1 cuts that would save much more.
Don't want to hear? Crunch we've been in a transitional situation for well over a decade. I've patiently waited for the proper leadership to get brought in and build a solid Dolphins foundation again but just aint happenin. Hasn't yet anyway. My expectations have been zero for quite a while now so another transitional year will be no different for me.
Personally I'd explore Ellerbe taking a pay cut. He looked improved in our scheme before he was injured early.
He doesnt make a dent on the cap or DL but I suppose the coaching staff thinks he has some upside. After the stadium renovations perhaps they could use him as a living turnstile at the stadium entrance.
The only way it makes sense to cut Wheeler is if he's a June 1st designated cut. Otherwise, it only saves like $250k. I'd rather keep him as a backup than save 250k.
Id rather pick names of FA offensive linemen that we can get for the vet min out of a hat than keep Dallas Thomas. Sometimes you just have to admit a guy can't play that you drafted and move on. He must be a stud in practice.
I think Fields is a very valuable member of the team..sure he had a down year for him..but compared to other punters he was still very decent. I am all for keeping Fields if he will 're-negotiate his contract and make it more team friendly.
