Although it would be considered a "luxury pick," I certainly wouldn't mind him at all. Dude can flat out ball, and pass-rushers are valuable in today's NFL. I don't believe he'll make it to #14, though.
I'm all for BPA, but there's got to be some sort of plan or path for that player contributing This team already has a lot of talent on the edges, and does a really bad job of developing and using it properly. I don't think adding Beasley would help that.
He's a beast, Clemson is going to miss him, one of their key defensive players that was part of the best defense in the FBS.
Love the player. Not sure I love the fit though. I know we run a lot of hybrid stuff so its not off the table…but you have to have plan to get him on the field. Even if thats how Seattle used Irvin as a rookie which was purely a pass rush specialist…he just needs to be on the field to get after the QB. He's a dynamic pass rusher…would be a terror opposite Wake.
I love Vic Beasley. I've loved him since I started evaluating him for last year's draft. I haven't always been convinced he has the ability to play as a defensive end, but he's doing a good job convincing me of exactly that. I'll say this. I've never had a problem with him from a strength standpoint at the college level. So any doubt about him playing defensive end has to do with translating from college to pro. But this is sort of like how you'd doubt that Russell Wilson can be as good as he was at Wisconsin when he gets to the pros, because of his height. It's a guess. A pretty educated guess, but a guess nonetheless. Vic Beasley was outstanding at Clemson. Nothing short of outstanding.
Can we stop with this myth that this staff has not developed the guys on the edges properly. It's complete bull****. Olivier Vernon is a testament to their coaching. Derrick Shelby is a contributor. Chris McCain showed well as a rookie. The only guy that has not lived up to expectations is Dion Jordan, and it is completely on him for his lack of work ethic and drug problems.
You can seriously look at what's done in regards to the Closed End/Open End DE positions in this defense and claim it makes sense? They had Dion Jordan gain 45-pounds from his combine weight and go from a wide stand-up position to a Closed End who kicked in to a stand-up 3-technique in Nickel packages. Jared Odrick is a DT who for spent a whole lot of his time lined up wide of the left tackle on the weakside because teams figured out that was the adjustment. Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon have spent the last two seasons trading off closed end duties despite the fact both of them are pretty well edge rushers. Derrick Shelby meanwhile easily represents their best option to fill the position, but meanwhile the 285-pound former Nose Tackle lines up in a wide variety of positions and is back in the same situation Odrick was where an alignment that has the strong-side of the formation on the offensive left means he's out there on an island edge rushing. Meanwhile they seemingly have no idea what to do with McCain and you really shouldn't bet on them figuring it out.
Id love to see us draft Beasley, he's a stud. If this coaching staff can't figure out what to do with him then hopefully the next staff we have will be bright enough. I think he's just a player, he will fit into a role and make plays. I think he would add a lot to our defense. I think we'd be lucky to get a talent like him if he fell to us.
I'd trade Dion for almost anything to Philadelphia and pick up Beasley. This guy is a real football player, not just an athlete.
I think Beasley would ideally be a Sam in our defense. "A lot of teams see me as a 3-4 outside linebacker. I am willing to play defensive end in a 4-3 at the next level, but the majority of teams want me to play outside linebacker and I'm fine with that," Beasley said.
Beasly is a good player, but I'd be surprised if Miami picks him. I think Hickey will be drafting guys that can help win now, as he is looking over his shoulder at Tannenbaum and Philbin is on the coaching hotseat. With the likelihood of being buried on the bench behind Wake, Vernon, Jordan and Shelby for a year, I don't see how Beasley would be the immediate impact player that Hickey and Philbin need. Our team is still figuring out how to get Dion Jordan in the game behind Wake and Vernon, and adding Beasley to that rotation would make for a complicated DE situation.
Beasley could play the Sam in our defense. If he is picked, I'd expect him to be in the starting lineup fairly early in camp.
Beasly doesnt have a lot of experience in coverage. I think thats where Dion Jordan should be playing.
