Well, let the off season heat up. We got the Combine next week and that should be the catalyst to kick start Free Agency Rumors and releases. I believe the FO will be spending the week scouting but also valuing their on the bubble player. I guarantee they are gauging Mike Wallace's trade interest (doubt there is much due to $$$). This is the part of the off season that is exciting for what the possibilities could be. I do believe we will be very busy and involved these next few months so hold on.

With the Combine this coming week, there are a good number of players I'll be keeping an eye on based off need.

RB: Lamar Miller pieced together a hell of a season despite not getting the workload like some backs in the league. Still, his arrow is ascending but our offense could only benefit by adding a compliment to him. Miller is speed, quickness, and a home run threat. I'd like to find a back with good vision, power, and size.
    • J. Ajayi - stout compact back from Boise. Will be interesting to see how he tests this week. Round 3-5 for me.
    • M. Brown - the UT product never lived up to hype but he could become a better pro Round 5-7.
    • D. Cobb - this is my preferred pick due to his size, the system he comes from and he just seems like a pack your lunch and work type of guy. Round 3-4
    • T. Coleman - the IU product could surprise by how high he could go. Wouldn't hate the pick but similar to Miller than a compliment
    • J. Crockett - The Browns took some small school backs last year and it looks like a real steal. Crockett could be the same, played with Turner in college.
    • M. Davis - had a rough senior year but he is a ball player just not flashy. Round 3-4
    • M. Gordon - only interested in how he tests, do NOT want him on this team, not a fan of UW backs at all
    • T. Gurley - I think he is the hands down best in this class, will be interesting to see how he recovers. I do think he'll be injury liability in pros though.
    • David Johnson - Another similar to Crockett, small school guy but could be late round steal.
    • Duke Johnson - going to be a great pro, I see him in Indy/Oakland where he will be a real player.
    • J. Robinson - compact stout back like a M. Turner. Wouldn't mind that as a #2 guy in short yardage Round 5-7. Be interesting how fast he runs
    • TJ Yeldon - behind Cobb this is my guy. Some may fear the Bama backs but he is my favorite coming out of College, love Lacy now though. Yeldon reminds me of a Arian Foster the way he glides and his patience. He is also a big back who can pass block. Him and Miller would be productive as hell.

WR/TE: MW is a ? entering 2015. BH should be gone as well as BG. Leaves us with Juice, Matthews, and PS Hazel. Not too awe inspiring. I'd look to keep Wallace for this year despite the issues and make it work. 10 TD's is hard to replace. From there I'd look at FA for big WR, but draft is loaded and I think we need to pick and early one. If Wallace does leave wouldn't be mad at doubling down on WR. TE with Clay a pending FA that is a need if he is resigned I stay status quo:
    • N. Agholor - not USC WR fan, but after CK mentioned him his tape is impressive despite multiple QB's. He would be a weapon in our offense, not a big WR though. Round 2-3
    • S. Coates - not a Coates fan as he reminds me of a Stephen Hill type player big size/speed but can't catch or route run (huge in the Pros). He will test well and be over drafted IMO
    • A. Cooper - 2 months ago no way I ever thought he'd be on board at #14 now he just might well be. Rumor is White > Cooper. Trust me Cooper would be great for us. Round 1
    • P. Dorsett - a UM product who will be a better pro than college player. My question is he more TY Hilton than Travis Benjamin in terms of a weapon. Round 3-5
    • D. Green-Beckham - god I want this kid. 6'6" with unreal athleticism, looks like Moss clone. Be surprised due to character concerns if he is round 1 despite talent. Round 2-4
    • R. Greene - not much on this guy since CFB season. He is slender but gosh he can scoot and is sure handed. If we got a big WR early and let Wallace walk I'd draft Greene in round 4 to replace Wallace
    • D. Lewis - late round small school guy with size. Round 5- 7 he'd be red zone weapon
    • T. Lockett - he is speedster who can catch and route run. Not much size. Not a one trick pony. Round 3-5 would be great
    • D. Parker - South Florida kid with size. Combine will be big for him due to speed and separation concerns. Round 1
    • B. Perriman - big kid from UCF, will be interesting to see how he times. Round 3-4
    • D. Smith - a lot fo people like him, I don't he literally just runs go routes. Still his YPC is great and I wouldn't hate him in round 3 but not round 1 or 2 like I've heard people rumor.
    • J. Strong - I like this kid but want to see how fast he runs. He is big strong and physical just what we need. #14 may be too early but if he falls to round 2 make that pick Dennis.
    • K. White - his hype has been surging and rightfully so he is impressive player. Round 1
    • B. Bell - the former QB turned TE I'd take in round 5-7. Why? Athletic, big, and knows how to run routes and how QB's want them run ... big things
    • D. Funchess - TE or WR whatever big kid with size and speed, need to see his hands improve.
    • C. Walford - picking the UM kid in round 3 or 4 would be awesome as he is big kid who goes up and gets it
    • M. Williams - reminds me of Travis Kelce who I wanted us to draft two years ago, if he is on the board in round 2 would be dumb not to consider. Think he'll test very well

Guard: Feels like our OL rebuild never ends for goodness sakes. We are close for sure and I think best use would be to sign younger vet in FA to solidify. Still, want us to draft a guard for depth and future needs as injuries always happen.
    • J. Brown - the UL tackle will move to guard in NFL and rightfully so as he is strong. Need to see his quickness and how effective run blocker he'll be inside
    • AJ Cann - some say he is the top guard and probably so. Combine could solidify or sink that notion
    • La'el Collins - he is Zack Martin 2.0 in the fact he should and will move inside and become a Pro Bowl caliber player. If he were our round 2 pick with intention to slide inside i would not complain but in round 1 I'd be pissed
    • J. Douglas - Another big kid making the move inside but has good athleticism from AZ St. Combine will make or break his selection from round 3 - 6
    • Tre Jackson - mid round guard from college powerhouse. Good size and strength
    • A. Koundijo - this combine last year hurt his brother big time and could make or break the younger one too. Feel much better bought this one as OG instead of OT brother
    • A. Marpet - small school guard who lit up senior bowl. Mid to late round depending on combine.
    • J. Matias - same as Jackson from above from same school, think Matias is better prospect though.
    • B. Scherff - what I said about Collins could be same for Scherff, my feeling is team will be too stubborn to see it and have him struggle at LT

DT: MY hope is resign Odrick ASAP and rumors are that is the plan. From there I'd cut Starks for money and declining play. What we need to improve the unit and defense is a big body to eat up blockers. Solai was missed in that regard but his play fell off in ATL as well. We need a young guy to come in and dominate the run game. FA is loaded with good options but they may be pricey and after resigning Odrick that would be a lot of money spent at that position. Here are some guys I'd keep an eye on for combine:
    • A. Armstead - a physical freak at 6'8" whose position may be a ? he'd be great addition to OL. But with Coyle here I have doubts on our creative usage for defensive players... so sad to say Round 2/3
    • M. Bennett - not really type of fit for big body but interested to see how he tests. Round 2
    • M. Brown - could be a 1st round option and his combine will show you how high he could go Round 1/2
    • X. Cooper - the Wash St. product is a guy who I keep hearing could rise in the draft Round 3-5
    • C. Davis - fits exactly what we need and he had great senior bowl, rumor is he isn't consistent Round 2-3
    • E. Goldman - young kid entering this year with good size and speed. Fits what we need but still may need some seasoning. I couldn't take him with #14 but in 2nd round I wouldn't be upset
    • J. Phillips - this kid is massive and young RS Soph. But, he is exactly the NT type with supreme athleticism. Will need to be coached up but in round 2 all day baby
    • D. Shelton - reminds me of a mix of D. Poe and H. Ngata, may not be as good as either but not bad people to be compared too. At #14 he'd have to have a hell of a combine

LB: Cut Ellerbe/Wheeler. Shift D. Jordan to SLB and take a hard look at upgrading ILB through the draft nowhere else. Not FA not through a trade look hard and long at the draft. A stud ILB would change the whole effect of our defense, have a ILB whose oft-injured like Misi is tough for continuity and chemistry purposes.
    • S. Anthony - if you've followed my mocks and preferred prospects this is my guy at ILB in round 3 or 4. Amazing size and speed and will be a very good pro
    • P. Dawson - similar to Jenkins and some have concerns with him playing inside, but you can't teach his instincts and by adding NT up front you can allow LB's to roam more than shed blockers
    • E. Kendricks - his brother is a hell of a player and the Butkus winner should be as well. He is smaller but his instincts and ability are top knotch. Not #14 overall but in round 2 we should all be happy.
    • B. McKinney - he will destroy the combine, repeat that. 6'5" with 4.5 speed. He was built for the combine and will go round 1
    • D. Perryman - the "Hitman" the combine will be huge for him, as people still doubt his size and coverage ability
    • H. Pullard - behind Anthony this is another mid rounder who could start year 1 and make an impact. Combine could really help him if he tests wel

CB: Grimes is still solid but aging. Taylor needs to stay healthy. Finnegan should retire and the rest of the unit is a ?. With all our needs, I'd look to resign M. Thomas to play the nickel and maybe J. Wilson on the cheap for Nickel and Backup FS duties. Will Davis is under contract but by adding depth he should be pushed. W. Aikens just seems better fit at FS and we have a need there. Here are some options I'm keeping an eye on:
    • A. Carter - big kid will be interesting to see how athletic he is coming from Stanford system
    • J. Collins - great size and speed came out a little early but think combine will help him get picked in round 2
    • R. Darby - another who should test very well, I'd take a look at him hard in round 3
    • Q. Diggs - mid round pick who will be a very very solid nickel in NFL
    • S. Golson - same as above
    • D. Grant - OSU product who could be solid pro but combine will play big into his draft pick
    • L. Gunter - reminds me of Seahawk type CB, wouldn't be surprised if he goes there, would love to add CB with size again
    • K. Johnson - very technical CB and if combine goes well could work into late round 1 or early round 2
    • M. Peters - top 10 talent level, will be elite CB in NFL IMO but due to character he prob won't even be considered for us. At #14 or any round he'd make our draft and put our secondary to a new level
    • Q. Rollins - one year of football to make scouts drool over and great athleticism. Combine could make take overdraft even in round 1
    • T. Waynes - Most people say he is #1 CB, I just don't think he is worht #14 but combine will be huge for him as well
    • K. White - same as Diggs and Golson and nickel CB are too valuable these days to go unnoticed
    • PJ Williams - will light up combine but his technique is rough

Who you guys watching anyone I missed???

Very important week, love every second of it..very necessary part of evaluating players..time to look deeply into the stock.

No more variables helping any of them, all individual movement, just take the movement you see and account for what type of space they can operate in and how functional and explosive it could be..

Natural position specific movement..it's a beautiful thing.

    We need starting safety..depth guard..running back 1a..starting receiver...starting middle linebacker..d tackle....depth corner

So I will be looking at all those units mostly..

I just watch, take notes at players who flash certain things, movements, then go and watch their film.

So are we going to hire someone to follow Miller around and tell him he's handsome?

Tre Jackson is closer to 6'3" than 6'4". Classic OL mean streak he won't test as well as Josue Matias. Rumor had him telling a certain QB to shut the hell up.

Give me 5 mean sons of.... that live to protect the QB and drive the run game and I am good. Fantastic btw someone needed to tell you know who to just play ball.

BTW don't want anything to do with Winston in our division....Nightmare scenario

Didn't care to put them cause no need for them on our team. Abdullah is similar to what Miller brings to the table. Gregory doens't fit our system. My whole point was to check out players who would fit our needs or what we covet

    Good write up.

Quibbles: I don't see a Martin in this class. Certainly don't see that in Collins. Possibly Scherf who will be gone in the top ten most likely

What I want in this draft in round 1 is an offensive playmaker. WR or possibly RB. We need another game breaker. The RB from Georgia would be my pick if we went RB.

Otherwise, I'd prefer to go WR, and there are four potential stars in the making in the first round at that position.

I think we need more big play playmakers.

why, are they clones of each other?
Is there something in the water that makes all Wisconsin backs come down with a case of leprosy, causing us to worry about him losing a foot in year 2?

Gordon is a completely different player than Montee Ball & Ron Dayne, and Dayne was like 14 years and 3 coaches ago.

Evaluating a player based on his school is a way of admitting you're not qualified to evaluate a player based on the player, IMO. Don't mean any offense, I just don't have much respect for the practice. There are things to note about guys that were coached in the same system, the pit falls the players may generally run across or the things the players generally know or do not know coming out. But that's different. Saying guys from such and such school always end up sucking is just...well, not my cup of tea.

Incidentally I'm having trouble figuring out what Wisconsin running backs have produced this reputation. The only tailbacks drafted out of Wisconsin the last 8 years are James White (who was only a 4th round rookie this year) and Montee Ball (2nd rounder).

Unless...are we actually reaching back 15 years to talk about Ron Dayne? Is this a thing that's actually happening?

He is one of those once every 10 year players. Just a monster. Only issue is staying on the field. Very intriguing player at #14. I like Miller and would prefer a WR with that pick, but I would probably still be pretty excited if we took him. He is the RB that every team needs. In terms of talent, he is better than Lynch was at the same stage.

Sorry chief, but watch Gordon when he doesn't have a wide open lane, beyond frustrating with his hesitation. Gordon, brings essentially the same dimensions as Miller and we need a compliment to Miller.

Reason, I said that about UW is they have not produced one above avg pro in the decade of runningbacks they've produced.

Thanks bud, maybe your right but I would lean towards Collins over Scherf but Martin really is special.

Agreed, for me it's WR over RB but no way I'd take Gordon over Gurley. Gurley is exactly the type who could complete our offense. Gordon is too similar to Miller.

What are your WR rankings for this draft?

No worries CK, no offense taken bud. I'll be honest my evaluations are done pretty basic from what I've watched of them play live, youtube highlights etc. I am by no means a scout or analytical guy. But, played the game and watch it religiously. My scouting on Gordon isn't just about UW it's about his inability to create without a hole in front of him. The fact that he plays for Wisco, one thing is he will be fed the rock, which he was. I do feel he is a much different player than White or Ball and I like him much more but for what I am looking for in a RB in the draft he doesn't fit that description.

Ron Dayne will always be considered hahaha

CK, I'm confused as you usually state why.

If my evaluation is terrible and I know you've scouted Gordon so please enlighten me. I'm not a scout but I don't see how track record, and watching a back struggle to create for himself would be poor evaluation.

But, I'd love to know what back UW has produced that you'd consider to be more than average. Considering White was heralded through college for his performance, Ball even more so for his career, and you can definitely say Gordon has the most hype coming out.

It will only be a make season for him if he leads the team to the playoff and saves Philbin's job. Saving Philbin's job and also Hickey's job will provide Tannehill with a front office and a coaching staff who believe in him.

It will be a break season for him if he fails once again to lead this team to the playoffs. The next HC and GM will likely not want to tie up a lot of cap money on a QB who over four years as the starting QB failed to deliver a single winning season.

To me it is playoffs or bust next year for, Philbin, Hickey, Tannehill, and several of the other veteran players on the roster.

You are really, REALLY missing the point.

Whether a guy is going to be good or not has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with guys that went to his school ten years ago, five years ago or two years ago. You ask me to prove you wrong by naming a good back that came out of Wisconsin. That's the point! I don't bloody have to because one has absolutely nothing to do with the other! You're evaluating player talent based on rainfall in Mongolia!

I'd be curious to hear his reasoning behind why it matters before dismissing it. Perhaps ZW doesn't do this with every prospect or program. His posts seem pretty logical and well thought-through.

I know zilch about the school in question's running game, but perhaps there are some common factors in terms of the coaches who have been there over the last while?

His argument is like saying Selvin Young should of been great because a lot of great RB's come from Texas and Ryan Tannehill should of sucked because there wasnt one good NFL QB to come from Texas A&M before him... does that help? It's a horrible argument because every player is different.

You do realize I'm not sitting here saying the guy isn't good cause of UW. I am stating I'm not a fan of his running style for his need. For me, I am NOT a fan of UW backs is only my preference. I am not saying he won't be good because of Ron Dayne, but my faith in backs from that school producing is not very high. I'm evaluating his talent off of our need for the position. The fact that highly touted and glorified UW backs coming out have not translated is just something that has happened.

I'm kind of suprised how much the conversation has based around one player who IMO I don't believe to be on our board. The post was regarded to whom I want to see at the combine, and yes I am interested in Gordon's number but not so much his fit on our team.

If I am sitting here arguing the only reason I don't like him is because of his school you are right that is not fair and poor tactic. But, I am NOT it's stated previously I don't like his style of play for our system.

BPK, I appreciate the life raft homie, didn't think a simple school dislike would overshadow the fact I am not a fan of his running style. To base judgement off a player's university in relation to their talent is a poor tactic but I will always have a preference on schools and conferences.

Clearly, you didn't read where I am not a fan of how his game translates not just off his school. I can see where it makes sense to compare A&M QB's to UW RB's if I were solely going off dislike on the school he came from. You are right every player is different, but in no way do I state UW is the only reason.

BTW you brought up a player in Selvin Young whose stats were the following in College:

Again, were talking about a RB who almost broke Barry Sander's record not a guy who sat #3 on the depth chart. Find a better player to argue next time.

You've made his school a central theme in your argument against him. I didn't do that for you. You did that. And now you're saying that the school doesn't matter and then in the next sentence saying it does, and then it doesn't, now it does, now it doesn't, etc.

It doesn't matter that the school isn't your only argument against Melvin Gordon. It's the second of two main arguments you have against the guy, and it's completely wrong on every level.

If I said that global warming is a hoax because there's evidence of data manipulation and plus it's really cold outside today...one of those two arguments is relevant (even if ultimately wrong), and the other is a complete joke. And so it is with your Melvin Gordon evaluation. One of your arguments is relevant (though in my opinion ultimately wrong), and the other is a complete joke.

Gordon is far from perfect, but he finds lanes that aren't necessarily apparent. Watch that long run he busts against LSU (he gets caught from behind). There was barely anything there but Gordon's vision afforded him that small opportunity to break that long run. It was an NFL-quality play through a hole that was smaller than a strand of spaghetti. He doesn't have game breaking speed but he certainly has enough to threaten a big play at a moment's notice.
