I think winning Super Bowls matters. Not the end all be all...but it matters.

Brees won his SB in his 8th year as a starter. Ryan is going into Year 8. So not all that farfetched my friend.

I'm curious what the consensus on my trade with the Raiders is, trading Stafford and a 5 for Carr and a 3. I myself don't know how I feel about it. On one hand it clears a bunch of space, gives me a pretty high 3rd, and gives me a young QB who I was pretty impressed with last year. On the other hand, I gave up a proven QB for an unknown.

It clears a ton of cap but you took a significant drop at the position. There's a trade off there. Ultimately if you use that to keep Suh and make other improvements that's a + IMO. I'm not the biggest stafford fan. You probably could have gotten more for him but there's a trade off there

That will be the case. I do think there's an immediate dropoff, but I became a Carr fan last year and I think he has a bright future. I was a Stafford fan, but I thought last year he failed to impress with some real talent around him, and of course there's the money. I might have been able to get a better offer, but I wanted a good, young QB with upside so I didn't really want to pass on this offer. That was my thinking.

Just for the record, the 120% rule will take effect for franchised players. I don't know how many people it will effect but I know Suh is one of them.

Also because it hasn't been mentioned (I think?), if you trade a franchised player then the original team will take a full dead money hit for trading him. I haven't gotten around to posting the rules yet for some of this stuff because it really doesn't matter at the moment. Same goes for RFAs and ERFAs.

So hypothetically, if I wanted to tag Devin McCourty for $9.5M (or whatever the number will be) and the Steelers trade a first round pick for him... The Ravens will take on his salary but I would take on a full dead money charge of $9.5M as well.

And no, you cannot trade the rights to a free agent.

I call it 'knowing your crap and not accepting less'.

I'm pretty much in a holding pattern to. Some folks sniffing around Sean Lee, Lotta inquiries on Dez. But, unlike those reclamation projects I feel no hurry to make moves unless I like what's being offered. Ain't nobody got time for that *****footing.

I agree with Boik, you had to clear space...and you did that while managing to get a young QB who actually looked good in Oakland....something that hasn't happened in 10+ years.

What about non exclusive franchise tags, RFA tags etc that are met by another team. No cap hit for the original team right?

The only way you won't be hit with dead money is if an offer sheet is given like normal protocol and you accept the compensation.

If you were to non-exclusive tag Dez Bryant and someone offered him like $15M during that bidding period, you could accept compensation and get two first round picks while not being hit with any dead money.

Not that I'll let that happen but yah I was thinking it would definitely affect RFA tenders if that came into play. Figured it wouldn't...but best not to assume.

Really? I thought NFL teams have engaged in trading the rights of players without taking a cap hit. For instance, did the Dolphins take a dead money penalty when they traded Welker to the Patriots?

Also, what is the 120% rule?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it is if they have been tagged previously, it is the tag +20%. That may be a special rule, but I know the normal rule is a minimum average salary of the top 5 paid players at the position last year (exclusive and non-exclusive); top 10 for transition, or 120% of the player's previous year salary, whichever is greater.

Correct. I'm not sure who this all applies to but I know it does apply to some players. I'll likely post the specific numbers sometime this week.

Basically it means if you want to franchise Suh your looking at roughly $26.7+ million. Be thankful dead cap doesn't apply. If the real life Lions do it they have dead cap left on him which means he'll cost $36 million+ against their cap to franchise.

This particular rule was set in place to limit the number of trades of franchised players for this particular league... it has less to do with what happens in the actual NFL.

Listening to offers for Dockett, Palmer, and a few others. If cap is an issue, I am willing to take on another cap casualty off your team as compensation. Send us some offers if you're interested in anyone on the Cards.

Reading through some of the trades.. And some look like fantasy football trades. This being my first season, I guess I was thinking it would be more like.. Non fantasy. Anyways... Jacksonville is sitting in some nice draft picks.. Number 3 and.. 3rd in the second round as well. Keep this in mind if you miss out on someone in 1st..and are afraid of missing someone in 2.
