This "should have thrown it at the knees" stuff is total bull sh-t. It's just people with an agenda trying to further that agenda, and not displaying a whole lot of knowledge of the game in those situations. Even a cursory examination of the play shows that if you want to throw the football from where Russell Wilson was throwing the football, and get the ball LOW at the receiver's knees, you're either placing the ball in severe danger of being deflected at the line of scrimmage (because the ball is going to go whistling by linemens' ear holes) or you'd have to loft the ball with a lot of arc which will take forever and totally defeat the purpose of a bang-bang throw like that.
Given the play call. That is the key sentence there. That play call was an abomination of a call. Blaming Russell Wilson is just an attempt to further an agenda. Blame the coaching and the ****ty WR not Wilson.
I don't even blame the wide receiver on that one. If I'm Marhsawn Lynch, I'd be hotter than a mug right now.
I agree it's the coach's fault, but looking at that pic above, and knowing what Wilson can do on his feet, he sure looks like he can make it by running to his left, given that the defenders are being taken away from that area, even with the safety spying on him (we know he can outfox the DE).
thats because he's a midget. if he was 6'4" or above which is really the baseline now for QBs he wouldnt have to loft it. from the picture you posted if he cant get a downward arc, and i'm not sure he cant due his depth, then he shouldve hit the receiver in the numbers not leading him, or he shouldve pulled it and ran if he didnt have the confidence of hitting the receiver in the numbers. throw it leading the receiver you also risk having the ball get deflected up in the air. way too much risk if you marshawn lynch in your backfield. from the picture it just looks like he never even saw the DB and just threw it thinking he was wide open which puts him at fault. if it was brees with the same size limitations i think he wouldve thrown it low at the knees and in between the tackle and guard where there apppears a throwing lane
If he's 6'4" and he tries to throw it at the receiver's knees then the ball comes out at helmet level and still gets tipped. Which is why they're not coached to go to the knees when they're trying to clear the ball through OL/DL traffic on goal line slant plays. You're just making this sh-t up as you go along.
Everyone wants someone to blame, but how about we give credit to Butler for making a hell of a play? From undrafted to Super Bowl hero. Ridiculous.
Exploded off his back foot and drove on the football like it was his. He made a hell of a play. Credit goes to him certain. On the Patriots side it's all about the individual effort of Malcolm Butler. But on the Seahawks side it boils down to: A) Bad philosophical call by Pete Caroll as he claims he told Bevell he wanted a pass play on the down B) Bad receiver execution as the receiver failed to fight for position on what was supposed to be a physically demanding goal line route C) Bad roster management fielding the worst WR unit in the NFL during the biggest game in the NFL D) Bad receiver assignments on the play design as Ricardo Lockette isn't physical enough to trust on that route A pull out of the play shows that the play design was sound. The quarterback decision was sound. The throw was sound. But Malcolm Butler executed and Ricardo Lockette didn't.
Yes. It wasn't close to being PI. Horrible play call. Plain and simple. Sent from my Galaxy S3 using Tapatalk
That play was hands down pass interference.... On the offense. You can't start blocking/picking before the ball even leaves the QBs hands, clearly that happened on that play. So much for all the refs love NE talk in this game.
You sound salty as hell, man. I'm assuming you're drunk.. but a few of your posts tonight have been blatantly ignorant. The Pats were the better coached team. They weren't gifted the game by the NFL, it was gifted to them by Seattle.
Alex developed this disease in the national championship game OSU vs Miami...it's then parlayed into every game the Heat lost and now Pats won. As a long time message board friend I'm trying to talk him into seeking the necessary help.
That playcall was made to give Wilson the MVP, not Lynch. And with Pete and Wilson both defending it... that was clearly the goal.. stupid... very stupid
i liked how the officials let them play this game, the game was quicker and had much better flow to it.
Yeah if that was my team, I would have been hospitalized one way or the other after that call. Holy f***. calling that play, in that situation, after that dudes miracle catch? omg
I didnt keep the game on long enough to see who they named MVP...I probably would have vomited if I had. Im thinking it should be probably be gift wrapped by whoever got it (probably Brady) to Seahawks OC Darrell Bevell. Hell of a play by the defender but holy crap.... I think Emmitt Smith and Sidney Rice said it best on Twitter.... Emmitt said it was the stupidest call in the history of the NFL (it is) Rice said he wouldnt have thrown it if Jerry Rice was there (With beast mode in the backfield, hes right too)
Yes I saw a bunch of missed calls on the Seahawks side as well. Roughing the kicker at the beginning (running into the plant foot is roughing automatically) as well as some facemasks. Getting into the "refs missed a bunch of calls" is BS. They miss calls on both sides. Feed Lynch is popular to say but don't forget Russell hadn't been tackled all game.
please. there are tons of qbs who throw at the knees in those situations. the ideal throw in that situation is in the numbers but wilson sucks at slants. i think he's 0-3 in the last two games, all three being picks. so if you cant guarantee you can hit the guy in the numbers throw it at his knees. Its the end of the game, the defensive linemen are gassed. i doubt more than one lineman even had the strength to lift his arms on that play
I get the passion but wishing for the team to die in a plane crash is a grey area even for me. I hate them as much as the rest of the board, but Seattle lost this game. The refs were great in this game. They let the teams play, very few flags. The game ran totally smooth. Seattle **** the bed in the last minute.
This. Seattles failure to adjust from single high safety looks is what got them in that mess. they needed to send help Simons way and they didnt. Coming in to this game Brady had a 20/2 TD/INT ratio vs single high safety looks. You can do that when its Sherman and Lane. You cant do it when its Sherman on one side all the time and Tharold Simon on the other. And then they could have called any run play to Lynch or Wilson to end that game and get the ring and they would have had at least 2 cracks at it and instead that called that crap. Seattle choked that one away as much as NE earned it
If you are throwing the football don't throw into the middle of the NE defense. Put Turbin on the field. The Jeremy Lane injury was brutal. Big loss.
Forget Turbin...they could have handed it to the damn fullback who probably has 4 carries all year and he'd receive less criticism. That play call was so incredibly dumb its like Carroll had a flashback to when he was Jets coach and the stupidity of having been a Jet never left him.
Worst playcall I've ever seen. Nothing comes close, nothing excuses it. You have a guy built for the goal line and 1 yard to gain, with 3 cracks and 2 timeouts. When that playcall came over the radio Carroll should have immediately overruled it, relieved Bevell of his playcalling duties and told Wilson to hand it to Lynch. Poor throw? Meh. Great play by the corner but a play that should not have been possible. You run the ****ing ball in that situation, every time.
They had 3 downs and 2 timeouts with the best goal line runner in the league and a ****ing yard to gain. Bevell should be fired and never allowed to coach again. Seriously, his career as a football coach at any level should be over.
I'm just saying if you have to throw the football there. Carroll said they would have to do it once down there. At least dump it off and don't play that risk. You know that Boik but No arguments here.
It's really remarkable the crap people spew when they have no idea what they're talking about and they just start making sh-t up as they go. I just got done watching All Star practices where quarterbacks are throwing to receivers in 7-on-7's without an offensive line and they're getting reamed by the coaches on the field as well as guys like Greg McElroy and Bill Polian, you know the kinds of folks who actually know a thing or two about football, for throwing the football low over the short middle taking advantage of the 7-on-7 conditions where there is no offensive/defensive line to worry about clearing. But here we got message board debaters who don't really know much about football deciding the smart thing to do is throw at a guy's knees through heavy traffic on a bang-bang throw that was destined to travel about 9 yards from point A to point B. Horse ****. He's not coached to get that ball at the guy's knees. Nor is anyone that I know of coached to do that on such a short throw where the ball has to go right through the OL/DL traffic. But go on just making sh-t up as you go along. I'm sure at some point some idiot will go up on TV and offer up a ten cent opinion saying the same thing without actually thinking about the mechanics of that particular throw. But I'd be very surprised if someone that knows what they're talking about thinks Wilson needs to whistle that ball by the ear holes of the OLs as if he's playing in 7-on-7's, so that the ball gets down at the knees of the receiver.
you're right. it was a fantastic throw. wilson single handedly won the game for the seahawks. he placed it right where it was supposed to go, leading the receiver where no chance of an int is possible and only by the patriots cheating and having the audacity to step in front of the pass do they steal wilson's 2nd ring from him lol. qbs never throw at the knees. they live in fear of having linemen bat the ball in the air...bruteaphobia I think its called
Pete Carroll may have reached his high water mark as a coach. Hard to defend throwing away a Super Bowl.
There's a difference between practice and game situations. In practice a WR will be berated for body catches but in a game there are situations where it's appropriate to use your body. That slant pass at the goal line would be a situation where a lower pass would have been more appropriate. That being said, these ball placement criticisms are nit-picking ridiculous. In no way was that a poor pass. It was a horrible call, but the placement wasn't the issue.
fair enough. i agree that the call was worse but i think the pass was poor too. thats three picks on slants in the last two games. doesnt seem to be wilson's best pass in his arsenal
If you are dumb enough to call that pass, at least be smart enough to call it to the big guy who was having a great game and can shield off the defender.
