How do you know we aren't making the playoffs?

I did not see that mentioned or even hinted at in the article. Guys like Wade Phillips and Jim Schwartz are unemployed and even the situation in Miami is better than not working at all.

I would attribute Jelani Jenkins second half decline to the defensive line not being able to keep him clean, not to his performance being illusionary. He's not a take on two gap linebacker, and that's OK. There's plenty of guys who need that to make a big impact in the league and it's worth that to get the upside he displayed consistently.

Dion Jordan really shoulda been simple, Coyles defense generally has former 3-4 OLBs playing the strongside position. It's not really a rush position in the base defense, but even then he's basically perfect for what it is.

We assume another bad year and they're fired. But who the hell knows with Ross at the helm, another year like last maybe they all get extensions from Ross.

Jenkins became starting LB and still had to do his bids on ST, it's a lot to ask. I'm not a big fan bc he doesn't have the size to play physically on a consistent basis, nor does he have side line to sideline speed. He may grow into but right now I see him as a nickel guy and ST contributor, which is what he was before the bodies started dropping.

I guess we will never know if one of the better DC candidates would have taken the job because Philbin obviously thinks the problems are all player related and not coaching.

I don't see how you can watch the performance early in the season and not want to invest in it.

For me it's about the unit as a whole. We have 4 LBs who are probably all best suited to play weak side in Coyle's D. Misi, Ellerbe, Wheeler, Jenkins. At this point give JJ the nod based primarily on him being the best bargain bc none of them are really good players imo. We still need a MLB and a Sam.

Coyle seems to value DL who penetrate and disrupt over guys who eat up blockers so we need LBs who can fill and clean up. They also need to be credible threats as blitzers while being able to drop into coverage after showing a gap pressure. Imo versatility is the key, Dansby being the model but they got rid of him for whatever reason and two going on three years later we have yet to find a suitable replacement.

I hope you don't mean Karlos Dansby?? I don't recall seeing any of that kind of play from Dansby....ever

Dansby is one of the most versatile LBs in the league. There's literally nothing asked of a LB that he's not he's not capable of doing and after watching our LBs for the past two years it's obvious that we should not have released him imo.

Wheeler was atrocious at the weakside position in '13 and is a career SLB, and Misi hasn't played anything like it and I'm not sure what would recommend him.

Ellerbe played well for a stretch in '12, but his struggles when not protected are even more dramatic than Jenkins. Ellerbe's one burst of competence came with two 340 pound linemen directly in front of him. Jenkins at least played well behind a penetrating 1-gap front so long as it played halfway decent.

I'd tend to agree that getting rid of Dansby specifically was a really big mistake.
