I'm not sure our passing game was scaled back. Yes we had above average attempts and 6.85 Yard per attempt average and those are just under Brady's numbers. You can win with that style of offense, but i'd prefer fewer attempts more runs and playing better defense in the second half.

It went from 19.8 to 24.2 so technically that's 4.4. That 24 pt mark is huge b/c it basically puts the offense about where Seattle's was and above other playoff teams like Cincy and Carolina. We went from an offense that was no where near good enough to make the playoffs to one that was. Obviously we still want improvement but we don't need anywhere near as much. We don't need to see a lot more improvement. We're already the 6th highest scoring offense in the AFC. Moving up a couple of spots would be marginal improvement, but it would make us one of the top 5 offenses in the conference.

For some reason you want to minimize all of that. You state the improvement amount incorrectly. You cite the improved the OL and use it to discount any run game improvement but ignore the fact the OL was in shambles the last 8 games of the season. (BTW at that point our offense was actually averaging 26.4 per). The inescapable fact is that our overall offense improved a lot and that our pass offense also improved a significant amount just by adding 3 TDs and subtracting 7 INTs. We haven't been talking about whether the offense will make the same jump next year (that would be an unreasonable expectation). We've just been saying that the offense did improve by a significant amount. It wasn't a marginal amount. It wasn't just the run game. It wasn't just b/c we had better OL for 8 games this year. It makes no sense to parse out minor stats. "I was just talking about the pass offense and even then just about the pass yards..." All of that is ridiculous. The offense improved significantly. Let's just leave it at that.

The passing game didn't go downfield (20+ yards in the air) a significantly lower percentage of the time in 2014 than it did in 2013. The difference was that Ryan Tannehill became far more accurate on throws less than 20 yards in the air. You may not have "seen" it, but it happened.

An increased completion percentage, an increased touchdown rate, and a decreased interception rate, combined, equals a considerable improvement. And that's why Tannehill's QB rating was up more than 10 points this year. That kind of improvement on his part has been associated with an average of two more wins in the league since 2004. Had Tannehill performed like he did last year, the team would've likely finished 6-10.

This is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. People marched around all season saying the same thing and reporting the same stats. "We're scoring 5 more points per game versus last year!"

That made me think Bill Lazor was awesome. But what if a stat like that was wrong?

One initial problem with that is that it includes defensive scores in those numbers. You're including interceptions returned for TDs as well as safeties. So without saying anything more I can inform you that your data isn't correct and that to some extent you've bought into a lie. When you exclude defensive scoring, your increase in points per game goes down by about 25%, which is pretty significant if you ask me.

Now listen, I'm not going to say this again. The running game is better now that we have two quality Tackles. I'd like to see how good it could be with two quality Guards. By and large, the running game is not a function of who's calling plays. It's a function of who (A) your opponent, (B) who you have on the O-line and (C) who's carrying the ball. The decline in turnovers is good--congrats on that--but (A) Ryan Tannehill was in only his 2nd season last year and threw a high number of INTs (17) so that number should damn well have come down regardless and (B) I'm going to wait until this offense begins to develop beyond what it was over the last couple of years--which is a conservative, protect-the-young-QB type of thing. We didn't take a lot of shots down the field last year. And once again, those throws were largely avoided this year.

You're not saying anything that hasn't been said all season long. What I'm telling you is that next year will be a test and if the Dolphins want to pass that test, they are going to have to incorporate more risk into what they're doing.

So 1/4 of all our points were scored by the defense??? Now that is a ridiculous claim.

    I fixed it.

Offensive output in 2013 was 18.9 ppg.
Offensive output in 2014 was 22.5 ppg.

The "increase" in PPG goes down by 25% when you look strictly at the offensive production. The actual increase was 3.6, not upwards of 5 like most are reporting. The 24.2 ppg factors in defensive touchdowns and safeties yet most want to report that amongst the offensive production.

One thing that is cool that Lazor help do is decrease the 3 and out percentage.

    2012: 18.82 - 6th in the NFL
    2013: 23.41 - 22nd in the NFL
    2014: 12.71 - 1st in the NFL

Interesting. Can you report more on that?

I'm curious how we were ranked 6th in 2012 particularly. Tannehill's numbers were pretty pedestrian that year so I'm wondering what that stat speaks to. Does it have a significant correlation with a team's record I wonder?

How did we regress so badly in 2013? Do we normally see big swings in that stat?

I wonder if that is more a reflection of the running game? I'm not sure how this offense in the final weeks of the season could have possibly earned any rank that would put them atop the NFL.

Did you also exclude the defensive scores from the previous season? That's usually not a number that changes significantly from year to year unless you add a prolific returner which we didn't. So that's not really an initial problem. The net difference will be about the same. The real problem is that you want to minimize any credit to the OC for some unknown reason. The fact is that both our run and pass offenses improved. Our points jumped from the bottom 5 to the top half of the league. No matter how you try to explain away all those improvements, the fact is that our offense was significantly better this year. And no, I'm not saying anything that hasn't been said before. Facts are facts and the fact is that our offense under our new OC improved. You're the one who is manufacturing reasons to pretend that your initial claim that the improvement was "marginal" was anything but wrong.

Yes, I had gotten the 2013 numbers straight from the offensive players' stats.

I'm not trying to minimize anything. I merely posted my opinion. The fact that so many have decided that I can't have the opinion is strange. I think this is somewhat like when Dez pointed out that Lazor had a nasty habit of relying on Tannehill's arm and avoiding the run. People didn't want to hear any of that so they called him a troll. It's sort of like how anyone who stands up to say something positive about Philbin is immediately a dip****. Or like how suggesting that Wake might be trade bait was immediately thrown back in my face with the words, 'You're an idiot. I've officially lost all respect.'

That's fine. It's all opinion. I'm perfectly happy if you don't agree with me. There's no winning or losing. The notion that sharing ideas has to be competitive is sort of horse **** to me, but if that's how you see things, awesome dude.

That's another area where there was a huge improvement in our offense. Especially considering that Albert was hurt Nov. 10th and James was trash on the left so we lost most of our improved OL for the last half of the season.

Sorry if you guys pissed off someone before I joined, but don't start dude.

I came from FootballsFuture.com because there were more posters here and it was the first that came up in Google. That forum more or less died. It's only got like 10 guys at this point.

But seriously, having to reiterate the same things page after page after page because people are too lazy to read gets real ****ing annoying, real quick. I'm sure you've had the experience.

That will happen when you make a ridiculous claim. People will call you on it. And they'll keep asking you to explain yourself when you're not making any sense and/or when you keep trying to manufacture a reason why your initial statement wasn't flat out wrong. The fact is that the offense improved it's scoring output significantly. There was nothing marginal about it. It doesn't matter which numbers you try to adjust. It was still one of if not the largest offensive improvement in the league. You can try to change the focus to pretend you're talking about what will happen in the future. You can try to attribute the improvement to anybody but the OC or the QB or whomever you you want to denigrate. You can try and parse the improvement into segments so it seems smaller. People can see through that. The offense improved a ton this year. It was anything but marginal. Admit you were wrong or don't, or just walk away, but if you keep maintaining that the offense didn't improve or only improved marginally, people will call you on it.

    Round and round we go...

Obviously the offense improved. The question is how much of a difference Lazor made. Imo the rise in production was more about better players than coaching.

The key statistic is that the team went from 23rd to 10th in the league in points per play.

This is the problem with forums I've found--particularly football forums, and especially Dolphins forums. You sit there and say you "called me out" like your some hero. It's not your job to "call anyone out." People are going to disagree on things. You and I look at these stats and we see different things. There's not a single damn stat in the world that speaks exactly to Philbin or to Lazor or to any other coach. There will always be disagreements in regards to how much of a factor the head coach or the coordinator or the roster makes in success.

In fact, we sit here arguing because of a word I used--not because we are so very far apart. We're standing right next to each other actually. I didn't say Lazor was bad. Far from it! I said the improvements that he made were "slight." Now I appreciate the stats that people have brought up. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there's been a revolution in Miami. But why have I been going back and forth for 3-4 pages having to say the same thing?

What I have major problems with is that this forum seems to be bad--really bad--in how it tolerates talk of the coaches. People are simply not allowed in this forum to even suggest that Joe Philbin may have some positives attributes. The same goes for Coyle. And here, I suggested that maybe this offense still have a ways to go and that Lazor--while certainly good--isn't perfect and has left some questions unanswered. Maybe I suggested that some of his "improvements" are being talked up a bit too much.

Now it would seem that's a very fair and altogether fine view to have. But apparently I'm not allowed to question Lazor. Dez wasn't allowed to question Lazor.

    See. That pisses me off.

There's nothing to be gained by 10 people saying the same things over and over until it's taken as gospel. That's BS.

No word on Coyle yet, means he's not safe. With looming questions about the Dolphins staff, an announcement will be made on if there will be changes or no changes. Either way, there Armando Jan 6th type pad has possible candidates. The WR info is also interesting that Landry can't be anything but a slot receiver with a low YPC. If that's the case we are in the market for an outside receiver if Harline and Gibson are gone.

    Candidate Current job Experience
Eric Mangini SF TE coach Former N.E. DC, former Cleveland and NYJ head coach.
Ed Donatell SF assistant Former Atlanta, G.B. DC. 22 years NFL experience.
Jim Leavitt SF assistant Former S. Florida HC, former DC at Kansas State (No. 1 D in nation).
Mike Trgovac GB assistant Former Carolina DC (2003-2008), NFL Top 10 in pts. allowed 3 of 6 yrs.
Winston Moss GB asst HC Miamian, 16 seasons NFL assistant.
Steve Spanuolo Balt. asst. Former DC NYG (2007-08), Saints DC (2012), Former HC Rams (2009-11).
Gary Gibbs KC asst. Former N.O. DC (2006-08), former Oklahoma DC.
Emmitt Thomas KC asst. Former DC in Philadelphia, G.B., Minnesota.
*Jim Schwartz Buff. DC Former HC Lions (2009-13), former DC Tennessee (2001-08).
Gunther Cunningham Sr. coach asst. Former HC KC, former DC KC twice, former DC Lions, former DC Raiders.
Mike Smith Unemployed Former HC Atlanta (2008-14), former DC Jacksonville (2003-07), former Baltimore defensive assistant (1999-2002).
Mike Nolan Status unknown Former HC San Fran. (2005-08), DC NYG (1993-96), DC Wash. (1997-99), DC NYJ (2000), DC Baltimore (2002-04), DC Miami (2010-11), DC Atlanta (2012-14).
These are all candidates with experience as coordinators on teams who have recently enjoyed defensive success. Obviously, there are more candidates on teams with poor defenses. There are also good position coaches who I believe will eventually be solid coordinator candidates which are not represented here.
Among the latter group, Mike Vrabel, the linebacker coach in Houston is one. Patrick Graham, the linebacker coach in New England, is another. Graham is interesting in that he graduated from Yale and was a Yale merit scholar. Both have been influenced to one degree or another by New England coach Bill Belichick.
*Schwartz is hoping to land a head coach job but that is uncertain at this time.

The track record for former Pats coaches isn't impressive. I'd like to have Nolan back. Even with his faults as a DC he had our unit playing more consistently and ranked higher than Coyle.

That's simply not true. Coaches are criticized all the time. I do it myself. I didn't comment on this thread at all when Coyle was being criticized. And I haven't disagreed with some of the criticisms of specific play calls by Lazor. But when you call one of the largest improvements in the league "slight" you're clearly making a bogus statement. That's not me or anybody else being a hero. That's just several people reading an inaccurate statement and pointing it out as such and then you acting like we're infringing on your free speech or something. You're completely allowed to say something stupid and others are equally allowed to point out that it was stupid. What's extended this so far beyond reason is that you continue to defend that ridiculous statement. If you had just admitted that the improvement was in no way marginal or slight, but you had concerns whether it could be maintained then most people would have seen that as a reasonable concern. A reasonable criticism. But the fact of the matter was that there is no way that jumping from the bottom 5 to the top half of the league in points scored is marginal or slight.

Probably would have already happened. The ONLY thin strand of remaining possibility would be if somehow this extension that is being negotiated with Joe Philbin were contingent on a change with Kevin Coyle or perhaps contingent on placing Philbin and the rest of the coaches under Tannenbaum who could make decisions about Philbin's staff. But that's thin.
