The Bears are also interested too. Yeah there no way he comes to Miami as DC. But if the Dolphins did have interest in Rex Ryan maybe that means Coyle is out in the next coming days?
They need D badly and Rex can coach it, but how does Smith's scheme (he's a D guy as well) fit with Rex ? I don't know... But I'd still be surprised, at least now, if Rex takes that job quickly...I think he waits around for some of the HC jobs to be filled...He sees himself as an established HC...
Should mean that Mike Smith, Mike Nolan, and Dennis Thurman are all available for DC candidates... ;-)
I think Atlanta is "the best" available job out there. They appear to have a supportive but not overbearing owner, a decent GM, a franchise QB and a few extra pieces on offense (Julio Jones, Jake Matthews, etc.). What's also advantageous for Atlanta is that they reside in the NFC South which is at the moment the weakest division in football. That said, I think the Falcons want to be an offensively-driven football team so I'm not sure they wouldn't prefer an Adam Gase or Josh McDaniels over a defensive coach like Rex Ryan who in theory might be able to sort out the defensive issues. I think Chicago and Oakland are both "rebuild" situations which may require more time thus they are automatically less attractive. However, they also both play in divisions that are home to great teams and QBs. For example, facing Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Philip Rivers, Matthew Stafford, Alex Smith and/or Teddy Bridgewater twice a year does not set you up with an easy road to success. It's not only going to take a lot to turn those teams around, but it must be done against stiff competition. I believe the SF job is less attractive than people think and after their press conference I thought it was obvious that Harbaugh was happy to sit back, keep his mouth shut and let them make fools of themselves. In SF, you're not only dealing with a GM (Trent Baalke) who has a strong personality, but a 34-year old CEO in Jed York who wants to be a part of the action as well but who, at least from my perspective, doesn't actually add anything to the equation aside from the being a 3rd voice in the room. York was appointed by his family to the position of CEO. He didn't earn it. He's not a football guy. It's really a disaster waiting to happen as far as I can tell. He's only slightly older than me, yet he's at the top of that organization. To my eyes, he's ill-equipped for the job and his presence only makes things harder on everyone. Any coach that goes there not only has to accept working with the current GM but also has to appease a young hot-shot CEO who is inexperienced and probably opinionated yet beyond reproach. That's a scary situation. I see them settling on a "yes man" sort of like we have in Philbin--someone who's willing to accept whatever his supervisor tells him.
I see him In Chicago. Daddy did pretty well there himself and Chicago is about the defense.... I'm sure his bloodline would be welcomed and there are some pieces on the offensive side also.
I think he'll be a HC next year. He's best suited on a team with a good offense and system already in place. He'd have been ideal in Miami if he went with Lazor as the OC and left it alone (except perhaps to add some running power). But, no way Philbin will want him as DC and no he'd take that - he probably thinks (knows) he's a better coach and a bigger name than Philbin. No way would he come to us as DC. Though it would really improve the team. Should have just fired Philbin and hired Rex. The era of ridiculous mediocrity and losing key games continues in 2015.
There's no way [hardly] Rex will be a DC next year id there are teams that are interested in him as HC.
Actually I think the odds are better that he will sit out this year.He has a broacasting contract in place plus the Jets have to pay him approx 4 million next year.
I am disappointed the Bears didn't call. A Ryan in Chicago, a very compelling storyline with Cutler at QB...still much better than any QB Rex has ever coached. A lot of tools on offense and a D in desperate need of help. I'd have liked to see that happen.
Rex has already said himself he will not accept a DC position. It's all over the place. Also, there's no real benefit to it in his career at this point. He's interviewed with ESPN already too, so if he doesn't get a HC job, he'll go to TV until he gets a job offer. He's going to get one though, teams are smart, he's a good coach.
I'm sure Rex thinks he's better than several coaches that are still employed. There are multiple openings. No way he takes a DC position. He doesn't have to. There will be offers.
I dont see any way rex goes to chicago over atlanta. Wherever he goes he will be able to coach up the defense, but after spending multiple years with the sanchize and the genome he is problably going to want a real quarterback, and matt ryan us that guy. Add in the fact that thr nfc south is such a poor division, and it looks like a perfect fit imo.
one of the reporters on nfl insider said he sat on the plane with him years ago when he was interviewing with the falcons, said that ryan would talk about nothing else but wanting to get that job.. also, he is interviewing with the niners 2maro, and he loves himself some Kaepernik..wanted to draft him and thinks he's very hard to defend.
