How much more time do we give Tannehill to prove he's got "it"?

the reason for the YPA and the inconsistency of tannehill and the offense is the oline, pure and simple as that. the oline has been in shambles and defenses are getting through on 3 or 4 man "rushes". the offense knows this and in order to counteract it the dolphins throw short. the patriots and jets were able to bring 3 and drop 8 into coverage taking away anything short, this added with the ****ty oline leads to no place to throw and the qb taking a beating. yesterday the oline was bad but they held onto their blocks just long enough for receivers to get down field and tannehill made all the throws.

good qbs need help you can never do it alone. just look at andrew luck the guy in december has 4 td 5 int with a 52% completion percentage and a qb rating of 61. look at tom brady at the beginning of the year when the oline was in disarray and look at what the jets did yesterday with pressure on brady. this is not rocket science here. give tannehill a stable and consistent offensive line and you will see consistent play and numbers you saw yesterday.

The general rule is that it takes a good 8 real games for the whole offense to get on the same page regardless of the OTAs and TC. Arians who is generally considered one of the best offensive minds in the game specifically said as much. It's not just about the QB even. Reality is that the rest of the team will have breakdowns that will negatively affect the stats even if the QB is perfect.

And had Luck had years more QB experience coming into the league. That was one of the things that made me call him the best QB prospect I'd ever scouted. RT came in as raw prospect. His experience level was a couple of years behind Luck's coming in. That was common knowledge and a frequently discussed topic before the draft.

You say "try again" as if you had presented a reasonable argument? Reality is that you and the (few) other critics haven't convinced anybody of anything other than that you may be trolls. That's what happens when the critics arguments are based on half-truths, outright falsehoods or out of context facts.

I have never hesitated to criticize Dolphin players and coaches when it has been warranted. I've even been critical of Shula and Marino at times so I'm not praising RT just b/c he's a Dolphin. RT has been a very good QB this season despite some difficult circumstances. The stats for common opponents between he and Brady are particularly telling. Brady is still HOF level QB while RT is a relatively inexperienced QB who is still improving yet RT has performed comparably this year in the closest thing to an apples to apples comparison that we can point to. This should be one of the few bright spots on the team that everybody can agree on.

 

There are 15 quarterbacks ranked higher in overall stats than Tannehill. Most of these names are notable names but others are teams with DISMAL records and like Miami will be watching the playoffs from home, names like...

Drew Brees
Ryan Fitzpatrick
Eli Manning

And then there's other quarterbacks who'll be going to the playoffs who statistically have played worse than Tannehill, names such as...

Matthew Stafford
Andy Dalton

Some of you need to remember and realize that football is a TEAM sport. Tannehill doesn't catch passes; Tannehill doesn't run block; Tannehill doesn't defend opposing receivers; Tannehill doesn't tackle opposing running backs

I don't buy the theory that Philbin's comments functioned as anything beyond a signal of of Philbin's cluelessness, but I agree with the rest of the post.

RT has been very good this year. I came into the season with limited expectations for him. I just wanted to see improvement. I wanted him to lower his INTs and improve his TDs to above 20, about a 2/1 TD/INT ratio overall. I wanted his rating to be above 85 by the end of the year. I figured that there'd be some rough spots early on due to the new system install, but I wanted to see progress throughout the year. I wanted him to take fewer sacks and take more advantage of the running opportunities. Before the season most every Dolphin fan would have happily taken those numbers. While I can certainly nitpick decisions here and there his overall play has far exceeded my expectations. After the first three games you saw that he and the offense took a clear jump. From that point on he's statistically played as a top 5 QB. That was despite playing some very good defenses this year. Sometimes you see a team or a player benefit from a a stretch of sub-par competition but that's hardly been the case this year. And while there have obviously been a few bounces that went his way, on balance I'd say he suffered far more drops and bad bounces that went against him. If anything, his stats under-represent how well he's played. I agree that it's difficult not to be excited by how well RT has played this year. When he adds a bit more experience to his game he can clearly be one of the best in the league.

Tannehill is clearly not the problem with the team. Everyone should see that at this point and it seems outside of Dolphins message boards, everyone does.

 

He was over 20 last year.

 

And the bright spot of your post is that all the names you mentioned are seasoned, established QBs... All with more experience that Tanny. Tanny is close to being one of those guys, but certainly the rest of the team has not followed suit...

 

The fact that you expect a team to fully install a new offensive scheme after OTA’s, TC and preseason, tells me all I need to know about your football knowledge (or lack of). That’s one of the most ******ed things I’ve read in the history of internet forums.

When it comes to the QB’s you mentioned:

Brees ran a spread offense in college under Joe Tiller, and Sean Payton's scheme is a glorified west coast offense.
Smith ran a spread offense in college under Urban Meyer, and Jim Harbaugh’s scheme is basically a West Coast Offense with some variations.
Foles ran a high-tempo offense in college, and Chip Kelly’s scheme is a high-tempo read-option.

In summary, those transitions were smoother than others, of course you need the right QB for the offensive scheme to work. When a new system is implemented, some QB’s may work, some others don’t, some will do it faster than others. For example, Palmer (Arian's offense doesn't have concepts/principles that come from the West Coast Offense) , Tannehill (the first time he has been in an offense not designed by Mike Sherman since high school), Manning (played in the same offense for the previous 10 years and the 1st time playing in a West Coast offense) that's what Arian's comments are about.

So yeah, Arian's kinda knows a thing or two when it comes to football.

To me, yesterday was the first game of its kind from Tannehill. As you say, "he willed the team to win." He has had great games before, but those were great team games. I don't say that because that's a negative for him, but rather to say "he hadn't won by himself before." Yesterday was pretty damned close to that, and that's encouraging, because this team isn't going to surround him with All-Pros anytime soon.

I do have concerns going forward, but that would be true of nearly anyone with Ryan's level of experience. I think Tannehill has definitely earned next year, and barring some crazy setback, I expect him to earn a pretty good extension with his play next year. I also expect Mike Wallace to build on this year and set new career highs in almost everything. Tannehill keeps improving every year, and I don't see why that can't happen again next year. The game is slowing down for him, and he still has huge upside.

The fact that our first round draft pick from a few years ago is playing well and still has "huge upside" would be a victory at any position, but at QB it's especially important. It's cause for optimism in these not-so-optimistic times.

Full disclosure: I wish I believed in the coach as much, or even 75% as much.

 

How did you calculate the first 8 and since numbers? I hope you didn't just look at the QBR for each game and averaged them.

I am really happy w/ Tanny's progress. He has held on to the ball much better this year (fumbles). This last week he really showcased his mobility, moving around and avoiding pressure with one bad exception. Pressure pretty quick and kind of up the middle, he keeps trying to fade back away from the pressure, gets caught and takes a huge loss. He seems to do this too much for my liking. I literally put my head in my hands. Having said that, he seems to be doing it less.

You have to love his arm. Folks like to compare him to Smith, but when he dials it up and rifles it in, the ball has some mustard on it. I wish I could remember the TD a few games ago where he did that. I even swore because I thought it was an INT. Nope, he threw a fastball and it was six.

Off the field I think he is excellent. He has handled every situation w/ class and never fails to support his teammates. Maturity far beyond his years and experience. I'm not sure he has oodles of natural charisma like Wilson, but he keeps playing like he has and his teammates will have his back.

And his wife is hot.

 

You may be thinking of the last stej game. In the second quarter on 3rd and 5 at the jets 45, Tannehill threw a bullet strike pass between defenders deep right to D.Sims to their 25 for 20 yards. That was one of 2 such passes on the night.

The first jets game this season was also his 1st 4th qtr comeback this season and his 5th career game winning drive. He now has 2 4th qtr comebacks this season, including the Vikes game.

Just looked up Aaron Rodger's 4th quarter comebacks and game-winning drives.. amazingly he only has 7 fourth quarter comebacks and 11 GWD over his career. Tannehill already is tied in 4th quarter comebacks. In Rodger's first 3 seasons as a starter (4th, 5th and 6th seasons in the league) he's only had 3 fourth-quarter comebacks and 5 GWD.
Yet people say Tannehill isn't clutch.

The AFC East has also been horrible for years, Patriots are typically the only good team outside of a few years with Jets and one with Miami

 

The second game against the Patriots last year was actually very similar.

 

Ryan Tannehill is going to come close to 30TDs this year with 4000 yds passing and less than 15 ints with the 5TH highest completion Pct in NFl amongst starters and it's his fault? OK.

He's having a better year than Romo, Dalton, Kapernick, Wilson, and a comparable year to Eli and Rivers.

So in his first three seasons, only 5 QB's in the history of the NFL have passed for more yards than Tannehill, who has had swiss cheese for an o-line. I think we are OK at QB. This also shows the dude's toughness, being able to stay in the game despite too many hits.

 

I'll say it again, Tannehill is not the problem. Tannehill has shown improvement every year and continues to do so. Is he Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Peyton or Luck? Nope. But guess what, neither are 27 other guys in the league. Probably 20+ other teams out there who wish they had him right now instead of who they currently have. You think Washington would like to have the picks they spent on getting RGIII in the same draft wouldn't rather have Thill now? there's no telling if Thill will get to that top "Elite" level, but after his first 3 years in the league Brees wasn't seen as much by the Chargers. It wasn't til his fourth season after the Chargers had invested in Rivers before it really came together for Brees but by that time the decision was made to move on. His shoulder injury just solidified their decision.

Tannehill is already putting up better numbers than Brees at the same point in their careers. Does that mean a whole lot? Not really. But It is a true staement.

 

He is perfectly fine. The AFC is just loaded with better teams but Denver will decline very soon as will KC. I don't think Baltimore is that much better either. Next year 10 wins and playoffs. We split with NE, who is the best team in the AFC right now. The team is there just needs more seasoning. After Luck and Rodgers the other QBs are basically similar. Brady, Manning and Brees are aging and not as good as they used to be. Roethlisberger and Flacco are inconsistent and Rivers is super banged up and also inconsistent. The AFC East is a tough division. NE is brutal, Buffalo is significantly better (leads the league in sacks) and the Jets D is formidable while their offense is terrible. I think the Fins did just fine.

 

The League office apparently needs more time. They just awarded Rivers Player of the Week in the AFC, despite him throwing three interceptions, fewer yards on more attempts, and having a passer rating about 36 points lower than Ryan's.

 

I just saw that and thought the same time. POW awards often seem to be for the guys who get the most press though, and not the ones who had the best game.

 

In all seriousness, if you look at this team and compile a list of the "Top 30 reasons we didn't make the playoffs" and Tannehill is on that list, then your opinion means as much to me as a mosquitoes opinion on quantum mechanics. I don't mean just your football opinion either, I mean your opinion on anything.
