It's funny to me that the people defending this idiotic move to retain Philbin really only support the decision so Tannehill can continue to work with Lazor when it's not even 100% guaranteed our OC will still be here next year. I mean I'm sure he'll get at least one interview for a head coaching position after the job he's now done with Foles and Tannehill. Or he could get a head coaching offer in college. If he does leave does anyone trust the man that wanted to keep Sherman to find a suitable replacement? here's a well respected league insider's thoughts from a couple months ago. https://twitter.com/NFLDraftBites/status/524315604614782979 Woody Johnson will inevitably fire Rex & should clean house. if I were betting man, I'd project Tom Gamble as GM & Bill Lazor as Head Coach https://twitter.com/NFLDraftBites/status/526806828806860800 Combination I've been pushing #Eagles Tom Gamble GM & #Dolphins OC Bill Lazor Head Coach. Worked together in past, & Lazor's young star NFL Gamble and Lazor? The executive I've wanted to hire for years steals our OC away and they go off to rebuild the Jets? While we keep Philbin? Sheesh talk about worst case scenario....
If that occurred it would make Dolphins OC a much more desirable position. Kinda like Packers OC. Or Philly QB Coach.
If Lazor leaves then Philbin will have to find someone from within. No one will come in to that situation. Maybe you can take it Piston
No one would want the OC position that just produced a Head Coach job? Yeah, OK. I would put in my resume' but there's no way I could compete, contrary to popular opinion coaching from the couch is much easier. And less time consuming.
He's saying no one wants to come into a team with a coach on the hot seat and the risk of dismantling after 1 year on the job. Personally, I think a quality OC doesn't think like that. You have to think that you can make the difference to push this offense to the next level. If that isn't your mindset, then you're a dead man walking to begin with. youre welcome
Does it matter? If I wasn't I'd do it anyway. What I'm not old enough to get all cynical and depressed over a game. Apparently you're the sad clown.
I predicted an 8-8 season. No disappointment, sadness here. Now, before your mom has you do your chores ask me why.
I don't think Bill Lazor impressed anyone enough this year to be considered a leading HC candidate for any job. It would be a huge reach for any team to do that. I like his upside quite a bit personally, but Lazor has a lot to prove as an OC. He had some real rough patches this season in the way of play calling. He's very quick to abandon the run and put the game on Tannehill's shoulders. I guess it's a credit to Tannehill that Lazor feels he can do that, but I don't see any team reaching out to get Lazor as a HC. I just don't see the reasoning behind it. I feel very fortunate that Philbin was able to get Lazor down to Miami but I'll be the first to admit Lazor is far from proven. Down the road I guess it's a possibility but Lazor has too much too work on. I think it's in his best interest to stay put since he can continue to work with Tannehill.
I know what he was saying, but thanks. You're absolutely right. A man with the drive and ambition to reach the top levels of coaching in the NFL is almost certain to believe he can make the difference. Lazor becoming a HC after only one year in Miami will give Philbin valuable street cred in recruiting a replacement, far more than he had when he went shopping the first time. There's no shortage of smart coaches ready to step in and coach an up and coming QB like Ryan Tannehill, this is just more doom and gloom from a professional doom and gloomer.
Philbin is not a system guy. He is not an offensive guy. He really is nothing more than a manager. A 3rd system in 3 years will be a terrible thing. And frankly, this is our best offensive output in about 12 or so years. I will be devastated if Lazor resigns or gets hired away. And we will be in serious trouble.
No. No one will want an OC position with a mediocre coach who will finish at .500 again and be gone. Ross is killing this team and the fans. If Lazor goes to the Jets, that would be the straw that breaks the camel's back. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I agree that losing Lazor would sort of undermine what we're going for by keeping Philbin, but still, the chances of that are slim. He's simply not HC material at this point--not with Harbaugh, Ryan, Bowles, Quinn, etc. all on the market.
Ah, the Jets. The 3 win Jets. With Geno Smith at QB. If you think Lazor'd be interested in that job you should have no problem understanding why OC candidates would be jumping thru hoops to be the OC in Miami.
Even if they end up 8-8, what I saw this season was a team showing signs of being something special. I want to see this group together one more season. Now, what I really mean to say is... I want to see Lazor, and Tannehill, and this offense together for one more season before I give up on them. I believe in these guys.
IF Lazor got a HC gig Philbin would be able to use that as a recruiting tool, along with Tannehill and an offense on the verge of becoming very good. It's possible he could nab an ever better prospect than Lazor was last year. Of course this whole discussion is a way of discrediting Philbin, implying that Lazor is responsible for the improvements on offense.
The massive problem for me is that Lazor is on borrowed time. I am livid Philbin has been retained. And I actually think we should make the playoffs next year. But Philbin is not a mastermind, he is a manager. Chip Kelly, Sean Payton(usually) brings the O. Carroll, Bellichick, Ryan bring the D. For us, our offense rides on Lazor. He brings the O. Coyle failed to bring the D. So when Lazor leaves, it will just be Philbin, who brings nothing. It's a long term thing for me. And so if we had a shot at Harbaugh, we had to take it. I mean jeez, at least just wait and see how we finish after the Jet game!!
Today Stephen Ross said something that I admire a lot. Someone asked if today's big win helped seal Philbin's fate. Looking puzzled, Stephen Ross replied that 'it's a great win but it's just one game.' That's how real decisions get made. You don't throw away 3 years of hard work and "let it all ride" on the next 60 seconds.
The decision did not need to be made until after the season. This game meant nothing. Neither does next week. Winning meaningless games is not our issue. We have not won once when the season was on the line in our 4 chances over the past 2 years. The decision should be made on losing those 4 huge games, not this or next weeks small game. People are assuming Atlanta Will be firing Smith. Why? He had 2 tough seasons but has been a winner otherwise? Ross has had 3 rough seasons and nothing else. Hard work is irrelevant. Tony Sparano worked like an animal while here.
Ross also said that he "hadn't spoken to Phibin at all." He simply reminded everyone that there was a year left on Philbin's contract and that things would stay as they are as there were no plans to abort the current structure and rebuilding protocols. That can be interpreted in one of two ways. One easy conclusion to draw would be that internet message boards don't always contain the truth, but rather a lot of venomous hate speech that doesn't actually reflect reality. The other would be that Ross--a huge contributor to Michigan--already knows he's out of the running for Harbaugh and thus bit the bullet on Philbin. It's probably a bit of both. For anyone who doesn't know, Stephen Ross is a Michigan Man first and an NFL owner second. That's not me talking, that's Stephen Ross' money. The fact that Harbaugh is going to Michigan is actually a huge win for Ross because he's thrown ridiculous money at Michigan.
I think Lazor deserves a lot of credit, actually. Not so much for the offensive coordinator job, at which I have mixed feelings about him, but about the way he has actively helped Ryan Tannehill with his footwork and throwing mechanics. Losing Lazor the QB coach would be a huge blow, I M O.
Except Philbin was supposed to be on the hot seat last year and Lazor still took the job. He was even asked about making that decision multiple times from Miami's lame press.
Van brings up a point. Philbin was on the hot seat this season. Ross set expectations with a playoff appearance. I guess that's about right for Ross. He tends to drag things out. I just am not a fan of his track record, if you look at how that all worked out with Ireland and Sparano, and keeping them around longer than need be. And Harbaugh is rumored to not want to coach on the college level. I am praying he stays in the pros.
So, what's the problem with that? I'm not saying Philbin is or is not a 'mastermind', but what's the issue if he's a team manager that allows his coordinators to run their squads? I have no issue with that whatsoever. I don't agree with you there. I like our A-gap blitz packages. I also like our 5-2 alignment. I just think we have issues with our base 4-3, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that we lack strength in the middle of the defense. We need a DT like Suh (without the d**khead issues, thanks) and a MLB like a Zach Thomas. We also need to move Dion Jordan to OLB. His pass rush with his hand in the dirt has improved, but, I think he'd look a lot better running around in space. We also need to move on without Jimmy Wilson, Will Davis, and Phillip Wheeler. If that happens, I think Coyle would suddenly look a lot smarter. You don't know that. You aren't in the locker room. All I've heard about him is the players like him and support him, so, he must be doing something right. I think it's unfair for you to pretend you know what's going on behind closed doors enough to say something like that about someone. He's a person, dude. All I will say about that is... I am very pleased Harbaugh will not be our coach. It is my opinion he is overrated and huge jerk to boot. So... whatevs...
I've said many times, it's not personal with Philbin. I am not insulting him as a person. I acknowledge he is a good guy. But if he cannot bring his own strategy to the game, his own excellence instead of always putting it on his coordinators, he is not long for this job. And in these 3 years, he has completely been at the mercy of his coordinators, often getting in their way this season. Is it a coincidence that our best game of the past 3 seasons was when he had the least presence as coach as he Mourned his father? And last year we heard how the players don't like him and didn't communicate well with him. All I know is what I see right in front of me. It's non-competitive football, and too much in game mismanagement.
You can call yourself a Dolphin fan, and call those 4 games arbitrary? You saw those four games didn't you? You're a fan aren't you? How did they make you feel? When we were 8-6 and needed one win to make the playoffs, and got slaughtered by a terrible Bills and Jets team...what did you feel? And when faced with a real challenge against a team of similar ability this year? The Ravens, with our playoff lives on the line. And we get smoked at home. And then respond with a drubbing by the Pats. Seriously, are you a fan of this team? Those games meant nothing to you.
Dude, this is the first season in this offense. We lost some key guys to injuries. These guys made mistakes, but they competed, and at times looked very... VERY good. There is nothing to tell me that we won't stay healthy and we won't be better next season. And if that happens, we will be able to finish some of those big games. It takes time to build a team. We've got a good, smart man who is doing his best in Philbin. I think he's a pretty good coach, and I have no doubt he will get better. I think Lazor's offense is brilliant, and as a guy who loves Xs and Os, it is a joy to watch. Our defense is very innovative. It needs a couple of keys pieces, but I feel it's close to being something good. This is not 3-13 we're talking about here. We will be 9-7 or 8-8. I think you guys that are upset about giving Philbin and this group another season are overreacting. You're also being a little arrogant assuming you have any real clue as to what's actually going on with this team. You might think you have all the answers, but, to be frank... you don't. If you really had any answers, you'd be an actual coach or a GM. We're just guys on a team forum. I think this whole thing needs to lighten up a little. But, that's just my opinion.
Truthfull, I wondered how we got to 8-6 in the first place. I won't question your fanhood, your presence here is proof enough. If questioning mine makes you feel better then go for it.
Lazor has done a good job, but I want to see him do it 2 years in a row and be more consistent from game to game before I call him a top notch coordinator.
He was referring to the fact the HC is on a one year lame duck contract. That's why you'd have to promote from within, its best to look at the big picture before jumping to conclusions.
I would laugh my *** off it Lazor got another job. Next year is almost certainly a wasted year, and I think those who want Philbin retained so that Lazor stays(as incredibly ***-backwards as that is) really need to see that kind of thing. Let's do another embarassing coaching search.
