Its done, he's coming back, were gonna find out if this continuity think has real impact on wins and losses.. I'm happy to give Hickey another offseason, look forward to it actually, just keep prioritizing those intangibles.. Goodbye Brian Hartline, thanks for the memories, don't fall down on the way out ya hear.. last 2 games..0 recepts. I said the drop by williams was an anomaly last week because he really has nice natural hands, he proved that today..he's a keeper moving forward. Lamar ran hard today, but theres no question we need a stud back.. and a Stud wide receiver to pair up with Wallace and Landry inside.. Defenes gave up 35 at home to the likes..that aint good enough..time for some changes there. Sign Charlie Clay and allow Dion to evolve, and were good at that position. Need a stud middle linebacker.. need one stud guard. Go after Suh. Albert..Pouncey..James...we have 3/5ths..gonna need a free agent to come in and play, with Turner at guard.. Jordan played his best game, that guy needs an offseason to get right like a you know what needs a hit of you know what. Tannehill sure can take a beatin..man, talk about staring down the barrell, I think he reinvented that phrase. he has improved this year, would like to see him work on some specific things to make this run next year.. heres to contunuity and talent acquisition leading the way.
If we win next week, then Philbin would have won one more game each year and this year posted a 4-2 division record. Also brought along our first legit franchise QB since Marino. I also think a solid argument can be made that if Albert stays healthy we'd have been a playoff team.
Philbin has nothing to do with Tannehills development (Sherman, and lazor)or drafting (Ireland). Hell, he was thinking about benching him because the rest of the offense sucked.
lol. He NEVER said he was thinking of benching him. If Philbin has nothing to do with Tannehill or the coaches, then why do you want him gone? I mean at that point what difference does any HC coach make?
Cooler heads prevailed. That's usually a good thing. I dream of AP joining Miller in the backfield, adding #9 from Louisville, a MLB, FS, and beating the tar out of NE next year.
Well the Jets had continuity from keeping Rex Ryan after a strong finish to 2013...let's hope keeping Philbin doesn't sink the team like it did the Jets this year. I'm not high on Philbin, but oh well, we'll see what happens. Hope for the best, but won't get any hopes up too high.
True but even with Tannehill and Lamar Miller having better seasons, the Dolphins still failed to make the playoffs. Not many other places to point the finger but coaching. I guess we'll see what happens.
Bottom line is that the future is an unknown, whatever move you make there are always doubts. Ross put himself, the Dolphins and us in this position by choosing to make one change at a time instead of clearing house. Think what we will that's all done and in the past. There are lots of arguments for why dumping Philbin was the right move, however, the water is muddy - in the ultimate team game - because of all the transitions throughout the team. Let's list them shall we? New head coach 3 years ago. New, inexperienced QB 3 years ago. New GM one year ago. New OC one year ago. New OL coach one year ago. New offense installed one year ago. New 4-3 defense installed two years ago. Big changes to LB/DL two years ago. Dansby, Burnett, Ellerbe, Wheeler. Big changes to OL one year ago. None of this proves anything either way, of course, but like I said, it muddies the water. This year has seen an improvement in every single area of the team. We've seen what was, arguably, the worse OL in the NFL become serviceable - incredible improvment IMO. Hats off to Benton, Albert and James (Dolphins rookie of year IMO). This year has confirmed some of the biggest areas of weakness. - LB, OL (DEPTH!), Secondary (sort of), RB (sort of), Wide-receiver (sort of). It has also highlighted some persistent issues like coaching, tackling, consistency. Get some use out of Jordan please? Then of course, we've seen injuries. Anyone care to play the 'what if' game? What if Moreno didn't get injured, or at least, injured so early? What if Albert didn't get injured half-way through? What if Mitchell didn't get injured? Or Delmas? Or heck, the whole mediocre LB corps? Etc. (Injuries aren't an excuse but for this team they really mattered, because this is a recently re-built team (if not still rebuilding) and although some excellent pieces were added lately we just haven't had time to add enough of them.) The question becomes what can be fixed and what needs to be replaced and all that change makes it difficult to answer definitively. You either have to give a chance for the water to settle or you throw out all the water, baby and all, and start filling it up again. Ross has chosen to stand by his previous decisions and give them time, to let the water clear and see what remains. I think that's a tough call to make, but that's his choice. I'll say this though. This time next year, the water will be a lot clearer, and the coaching reality, at least, will shine through. Maybe a little old-fashioned patience is needed. We are part of an on-demand, throw-away society, we're not used to waiting. And yes, I know, we're Dolphins fans, we've been waiting a while, but we have to remember that each time changes are made, more time is required, more time added on. I'm not settled that Philbin isn't the problem, but I'm actually happy with this decision. It might not be the popular one, but I want to see who this team is, what it can do, with the pieces it's been given recently. If that costs one more season, that's fine by me, because at least I'll know, and at least these guys will be given the chance.
I'm saying don't credit him with things he didn't do. It's the same **** that happened with Ireland. If any good thing happened, he was responsible. If anything bad happened, it was Parcells. I don't know what difference Philbin makes, outside of grammar corrections on PP slides. That's why I want him gone. I want a coach who scheme and is involved with his team, not a "CEO coach" who constantly fails in game.
What straws? Ireland was the GM and had final say. Is that not a fact? Ireland drafted Tannehill. Philbin doesn't scheme or coach QB's. Is that not a fact? Go troll elsewhere.
Not thrilled with the decision to keep Philbin, especially with Harbaugh potentially becoming available... the problem is we don't even know if we could land Harbaugh and I wouldn't be too excited with Rex Ryan. I'm willing to see what happens next year with another year of Hickey managing the roster.. all we can really hope for is that Philbin learns from his mistakes this year. Let's also hope that Hickey learns not to lean too heavily on players with injury histories. If we beat the Jets it'll put us at 9-7, which will be a minor improvement record-wise, but an improvement nonetheless... next season the bar will be raised and anything less than a playoff berth would be unacceptable.
Continuity gets you no where if you're a mediocre franchise ran by mediocrity. I know how it will end up as long as Ross is owner - just see the Bengals. Fire up that treadmill, I'm predicting 7-9 next season.
So why are you posting here if you already know this team won't compete next year? The Cowboys are taking bandwagon jumpers maybe you should start rooting for them.
I heard Coach K on the radio earlier this week and he said he never would have survived the first few years in today's environment. He didn't win many games and believes he would have been fired. Now he's one the the greatest college basketball coaches ever. He named some others as well, but I don't remember the names. You never know.
Because I feel like posting here and I'm a Dolphins' fan whether you want me to be one or not, thanks.
Our offense made some strides this year. Our defense took some steps back. Offensively: RTH is much better than last year or any year he's been here. Give him some better protection(he takes a beating every game) and Im optimistic. Miller is a much better back. Pair him with someone who can pick up the tough yards and I think we have the chance to have a good running game. Wallace had a really good season this year. I think Hardline needs to go. Landry, well that guy is good. Sims was a pleasant surprise and IF Clay can stay healthy then we're good there. Our OL will be good for the first time next year. Finally, we have some pieces in place. Who knows if we can trust Albert to stay healthy but hopefully Turner can develop. Now we just need to fill G spots and get Pouncey back to C. Defensively: We need to figure out what to do with Jordan. He had a good game today. Either lighten the load and give him OLB or rotate him in at DE more. Something needs to be done with our DL. I don't know whats wrong but they disappear against decent OL's. LB I think Jenkins is a keeper and we need upgrades at MLB and other OLB position. In the backfield, we were decimated by CB injuries. Hopefully, they can stay healthy and Davis or Taylor can develop. I think we need to find an upgrade at S. My draft priorities would be: MLB, OG, S, CB, WR and TE. DT, CB in the 1st round if a game changer falls to you. No big splashes in FA this year but find some quality starters and depth.
Are these in order of priority? Need some more DB's in general; what a beating we took there this year. Like Misi.....when he's healthy.
Well we all know now that most likely Harbaugh will never be Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins. Wonder what could've been had we had a competent owner running this team.
I'm ride or die with Miami so I guess i'm good with Philbin coming back because I have to be. Really....There can be a case made for him to stay on as our head coach. Good things can happen when you stick it out with a guy through good and bad. We've been mediocre with Philbin, just need to get that extra win to get over this crap. Jerry Jones has stuck with Jason Garrett in Dallas through all the bad and they are finally having a great year and are contenders for the super bowl. Obviously...our players are backing Philbin returning as well. Just because he's emotionless and stoic as can be on the sideline during the game, doesn't mean that he isn't in control of this team and the direction its headed. We need a few upgrades yes, but we also need to not get injured. The fact that we have a chance to finish 9-7 without Branden Albert, Finnegan, Jamar Taylor, Delmas, Moreno, Clay, Pouncey, Ellerbe, and Will Davis (all with significant injuries throughout the season) tells me that we are very close to being a playoff team (we should be in the playoffs). I'm also well aware that injuries are a part of the game and only minimal excuses can be made when they occur. The problem wasn't completely the injuries we had this year....the problem was not having enough depth at those positions. Speaking of depth, we've got to hope that our younger players like Dion Jordan, Jamar Taylor, TERRENCE FEDE, Billy Turner, and a few others like Aikens, Tripp, and Dion Sims continue to develop. I think our younger players improving is going to be key moving forward...Tannehill remains on this list as well as does Jarvis Landry. I think we needed this game today more than some of you think we did. It was beautiful to watch Tannehill hang in there, take those shots and still lead us down the field. He played amazing today, and if people can't see that, they are truly blind....We have a quarterback, there is no denying that at this point. I think some credit can go to Philbin with how Tannehill has developed. So for next year, -have a good draft -be smart in free agency -younger players need to keep developing -Beat the Bills twice -Let those down to the wire games go 50/50 for us rather than 30/70 -Lastly we have to stay healthy where and when it matters most....Luck has to be on our side.
Very nice interview of Daryn Colledge.. listen to when he talks about Ryan Tannehill and how he likes how he fits in the scheme, and about Joe Philbin and how a lot of people in the locker room like him. Colledge seems like a straight shooter, no nonsense guy. http://www.miamidolphins.com/multim...ill_More/a27617f4-33b7-4a89-99f0-a38fc12f2f90
I think that the part that troubles me the most is pressure and "aura" that will hang over this team at the start of next season if we get off slowly or all the same mistakes pop up. Coyle coming back gives me very little optimism that this defense...which has been HORRID over the past 6 weeks, wont be significantly different even with a new draft and FA group
Congrats to the Phins for sticking with their plan. Football isn't unlike most things in life--it's hard to make real sustainable progress. It doesn't happen without tough decisions and a whole lot of patience. There will be tough stretches and there will lots of people throwing stones at you no matter what. I'm happy that Ross made a decision and wasn't just going to go with what the most vocal and angry subset of fans wanted. I'm happy with who we've got. I'm excited to see how the team fills in the holes this off-season. There is a lot that can be done in the draft as well as free agency, although I certainly hope we can avoid signing guys to ridiculous contracts just so we can dress them up in our uniform for a couple seasons. I don't think we need to make any big splash moves in free agency. I'd love to see a series of solid and wise decisions aimed at improving each area of the roster. Oh, and we're making the Play-offs next year. I ain't even worried about that. Phins up!
No. Let's set the record straight with the Ireland thing first of all. That's not what people were saying. What people were saying is that Parcells could and did veto moves Ireland wanted to make and can and did force him to make other moves he didn't want to take. Because of that very simple, uncomplicated fact, you cannot rightly judge the job Ireland did while Parcells was still here, because no one has any real idea which moves were whose. You can, however, judge Ireland by the job he did when Parcells was gone, and the actual truth of the matter is that he was a solid talent evaluator but a horrible team builder. He also had a huge ego, that lead directly to Bullygate. Those are the reasons he was justly fired. Having said that, its you and your side that are wanting to give Philbin the blame for everything bad and none of the blame for anything good. You are the one trying to have it both ways. Here's the thing, I'm ok with him being fired, but the narrative that he does nothing and is the worst ever is ridiculous and just plain incorrect. He's average. Average coaches can win in this league, they can also lose, but he's not horrible. If you are gonna replace him with a real shot at greatness like Harbaugh or Malzhan, then I say go for it. If its for Rex Ryan or Gary Kubiak......I'm not so sure.
Except that's not true. History proves you wrong. You may go nowhere, you also may improve. Look at the Cowboys for the most recent example.
As much as I'm on the fence with both sides of the Philbin arguement, Jason Garrett is a pretty good example of the improvement part, he had 3 straight seasons at 8-8, fans were calling for his head (Sound familiar?), now he's leading a pretty solid team into the playoffs with a legit shot to push deep. And by no means do i think Jason Garrett is a good coach.
Giving Hickey another year doesn't bother me at all. Timing is paramount. So even if I dislike Philbin's game management, it's probably the best option ATM. I do enjoy Philbin's sense of sportsmanship. He won't run up the score or intentionally humiliate his opponent. Get Tanny an offensive line and he'll explode.
