So, apparently Philbin gets fired if we don't make the playoffs. Spoiler alert: Philbin's getting fired!

Does Hickey select his replacement? Is it a combo of Ross + Hickey + Aponte? Dan Marino get any say? Or the Ghost of Dolfan Denny?

Honestly... this is why I wanted a clean slate last year, so you dont have this awkward situation with the GM. Typically, I'd assume ownership and the GM are in on selecting the head coach. What I'd like to do, is identify the best HC candidate. If he comes aboard to work with Hickey, great. If that HC candidate says No to Hickey, then if you think he's the right guy to the the HC, you give Hickey the boot too. Don't let Hickey's presence let you loose the HC candidate you identify as the guy. That's just my opinion. Of course, the hard part here... we have no real football people, other than Marino I guess in the organization to help identify who that top HC candidate might be.

I think Hickey did a good job in his first offseason, but if he prevents us from bringing in the HC we want, then I'd part ways with him. You'd have to be 110% sold on your GM to keep him, and let him have a say in the HC. Personally, I'm not sold on Hickey enough to do that yet. There's just not enough there to judge him on IMO.

If I'm Ross, I'm willing to give up a first rounder for Harbaugh. Let him pick the GM and decide if he wants to keep Marino around (I hope he does). Make it clear that it's his show if he comes down here.

Plan B would be to try to entice Gruden or Cowher out of the analyst booth. Same deal with them, they can decide who stays and who goes.

After that, I don't think there are any candidates that warrant giving them personnel control. I didn't expect much of Hickey, given that he was our 6th or 7th choice for GM, but he did have a nice draft by hitting on James and Landry, so I'd keep him around a while longer. I think Aponte is one cook too many in the kitchen, so I'd be inclined to let her go or put her firmly under the office of the GM. Teams have enough issues with power struggles between the coach and GM. Adding another boss to the mix does not help anything.

Like the Philbin hire, the decision is 90% Ross. I think he will move mountains to acquire Harbaugh. Hopefully it will be his first monumental step in the right direction.

i agree with some of your thoughts but we must be sure we are not '' enticing' someone to come and be our coach, thats a bad word for this market..you have to want to be here, like really bad before I even consider you..

    my short list.

    Cowher

    Malzhan

    Briles

    Harbaugh

    Bowles.

You're right, this constant lame duck head coach / GM thing is getting old with this team. It has to make it nearly impossible for Ross to determine whether the coach or GM are responsible for the successes and failures of this team when he keeps retaining part of the coach / GM combo. It stretches back to 2011 then Ireland should have been fired with Sparano. The repercussions of that mistake echo to today.

But you're right, Hickey did do a good job and the fact that Hickey did a decent job in his first season is another reason I lean towards wanting Philbin to get another shot. See what Hickey can do with another year and if he can give Philbin enough talent to continue to improve. If no playoffs next year, clean house.

Otherwise history repeats. Ross probably keeps Hickey, and we don't get the best head coaching candidate because they either want their own guy or don't want to be paired with a lame duck GM.

Yes, we don't want another Saban scenario. But Ross will need to reel in the most coveted coaching free agent available. The Market will move on this one. And while Oakland is a strong suitor due to geography, it is another toxic environment where the Davis kid is running things into the ground, like the Debartolo rejects have, and will continue to. The one good thing to happen to that team since the 90s, they are letting walk away. Eddie must be laughing his *** off at those clowns.

I'm not an emotional fan like that. Philbin will be judged on how he's performed during his entire tenure, and the general arc of the team, the last three games are part of the equation but not an overly sizable one.

Ross has this well thought out:

In a throwback helmet from 1972 lies 26 letters, A-Z

We will select a letter. This letter will be the letter of the New coaches first name

We will then select another letter. This will be the letter of the New Coaches last name

The details are yet to be released, but they are considering doing the selection during half time of the super - bowl

It seems Ross has never seen the super-bowl trophy and those close to him thought it a great opportunity to bring Mr Ross up to speed

CK mentioned this a while back. I challenged him on it and he just said something like "Ross is on the record as saying Philbin would be fired if we didn't make the playoffs this year." I took him at his word, cause I'm lazy and he told me what I wanted to hear!

Pretty much all coaches not on winning teams are lame ducks. It would surprise no one if Coughlin gets fired this year and he won two superbowls.

It's going to be Ross and whomever he decides to listen to.

Hickey will be lucky if he didn't get pushed out for whomever the new coaching staff wants.

Ok, but not really sure what your point is and what it has to do with the point I'm trying to make which is: Miami needs to stop trying to force head coach / GM applicants to work with a lame duck counterpart. Eventually they need to do a clean sweep and bring in a new pair. Let them win or fail together .

of course I'm speculating 3 games before the season ends when i say its over, if he wins out I will respect the process and achievement and try to find perspective and reasoning..but three seasons in with 3 games to go, the raven game was the meter game.

Dom Capers is settled down as a defensive coordinator. The guy loves his Green Bay job more than anything because he has ultimate job security with McCarthy and Rodgers.

No thanks at Mike Shula, good position coach, and he's done what he can with Cam.. but I don't think he can cut it as a head coach.

It will happen the same way it does for every NFL team. There will be a group within the organization that interviews the candidates, but Stephen Ross will be the guy that makes the call on who is hired. This is how it is with every team in the league. This idea that the GM has the ability to hire and fire the head coach is largely a media creation.

Precisely. If we only beat the Jets and Vikings, finish 9-7....would you keep Philbin? If we lose to either of those teams, we are an 8-8 team...LOL. And the Vikings game is no gimme.

    This will be "interesting".

If Hickey stays and decides who the coach will be, I wonder how many of the people that complained last off season about us not letting the GM pick his coach, will complain now. Conversely, it'll be "interesting" to see if those same people will continue to complain if we sign Harbaugh and HE picks the GM.

Why give up draft picks for Harbaugh if Harbaugh doesn't want to be in Miami your shooting yourself in the foot. He would probably swap and trade every last draft pick and good player left to Oakland and coach there the next season. If there's a replacement coach he better want to be here or this cycle will never end.

A HC can't be traded against his will as far as I know. Even if he could, no team would ever do it.
