the season is all gonna play out and give us the answers were looking for..

if philbin gets this team to win 4 out of the next 5 then he's doing something right that we here aren't taking into account, if he doesn't then it tells us the team isn't responding well enough in his third year.

it was an honest question, only info that i have had up until CK laying the wood here was that lazor didn't take the detroit job and took the dolphin job because of his respect for Philbin.

this is evaluation year, the year is not over, I'm trying to keep things in perspective.

You are really playing semantics. Sure idiotic is a stronger term than questionable but you are being highly critical of the decision to hire Sherman despite the fact that he was a very qualified candidate. And how can a decision be questionable and safe at the same time?

Im not going to go bat**** crazy if Philbin is retained. I just have not seen anything that shows hes benefitting us in any way. Hes not a brilliant strategist. Hes not a great motivator. I mean what has he really done that makes you go..ok..this is a good head coach?

I havent seen anyone able to really state one area Philbin excels at.

I dont like his use of players. He has misused Dion Jordan. Hes got players like Chris McCain and Billy Turner that should be getting good playing time..and stubbornly sticks with lost causes like Dallas Thomas.

And I think his Kodak crap is about the dumbest thing in the world.

You started with the semantics and then accuse me of semantics? Hilarious.

Semantics is the foundation of logic by the way. If your argument can't withstand a semantics debate, perhaps it is invalid in the first place.

Questionable: Choosing to start your year with Geno Smith over Michael Vick.
Idiotic: Starting Geno, then benching him for Vick, then benching him for Geno.

I did? Seems to me you're the one who jumped on the term "idiotic" rather than discuss the actual topic ie whether the hiring of Sherman was considered a bad decision at the time it was made or is it just being portrayed that way now by posters wanting to make Philbin look bad.

And yet there are people in this thread that suggest hiring Rex to replace Philbin would be a good idea.

I honestly do not know why Lazor chose Miami over Detroit. It could be that Miami significantly increased their offer once McAdoo (and Shanahan, and Kubiak) rejected them. Or it could be that he just loved Joe Philbin that much. Or it could be that his wife doesn't like cold weather.

What I know is that when a guy says in an interview that Joe Philbin is the reason he's here, he's just talking. It's not a lie. But it's not the whole truth either. Bill Lazor has done this several times in his press conferences recently, praising the heck out of Joe Philbin while underhandedly making it clear that Philbin either overruled him or did or said something he wouldn't have. I mean at one point he even tried to turn around the whole question of Philbin being gutless at the end of a half, basically said I wish I would have had the courage to be gutless.

Looking at how he survived for years in Green Bay, even through a head coaching change which seems kind of rare, and how he's stuck in Miami so far I'd say what Joe Philbin really excels at is somehow convincing people in charge that he's a guy they should have around. As for what he excels at as a head coach I don't know either.

No, he wouldn't. I'd give him a C or C- on your scale.

Staff: C. Philbin has been suspect at making staff decisions since he was hired. Many of us have already gone into length about this very subject. Most importantly, if Joe had his way, Miami fans and the organization would still be suffering through Mike Sherman whom Philbin vehemently supported the future of in the face of obvious failure. Philbin and Sherman shared a similar mindset and philosophy which seems quite different and possibly contradictory to that of Lazor's and Chip Kelly's; therefore, if the hiring were solely up to Philbin and without pressure from Ross to bring an exciting, high-powered offense to Miami, Lazor would've never landed here. Philbin would've brought in either a familiar face or an OC with a shared or familiar offensive background.

Game Plan: C [I don't give Philbin credit for Lazor's offensive game-planning success]. This year's game plan and halftime adjustments are night and day improved from last year's. It's like 2 different teams. In the 3rd quarter, Lazor's passing game has 10 TDs, 1 INT, and a 112.3 Rating; meanwhile the ground game averages an impressive 6.5 YPC on 66 carries [432 yards] which is its best performance of any quarter by far. Combined, that's 12 TDs in quarter 3 through 11 games. The First quarter similarly seems to start out well-scripted as Lazor's passing game posts an efficient 112.5 rating behind a 75.0% completion rate and 0 INTs, and the ground game averages 4.4 YPC.

In 2013, the passing offense pitifully opened games with a 68.9 rating, 55.8% completions, and 4 INTs in quarter 1, and the ground game matched it with 3.5 YPC [compared to 4.9 and 4.3 in Quarters 2 & 4]. In quarter 3, Philbin/Sherman's passing offense created just 8 TDs in 16 games to go along with 3 INTs, and the ground game averaged 3.9 YPC [its second worst quarter] with 2 TDs. That's 10 combined TDs in quarter 3 in 16 games. I'd put much of this disappointment on scripting and stubbornness. Unlike last year, we're also playing more aggressively when we have leads like Chip Kelly's philosophy preaches. Two key things that shed perspective on these aforementioned discrepancies and help identify them are:

    1. Philbin & Sherman shared a similar offensive mentality & mindset dating back at least to their time in Green Bay together, and the offensive-minded Philbin wouldn't have hired Sherman as our OC if they didn't share a strong commonality in this regard. That makes it easier to pinpoint the culprits of our prior game-planning & halftime-adjustment inadequacies.

    2. Philbin has no prior experience in an innovative Chip Kelly system, one that Lazor helped create, and Kelly/Lazor's system is quite different than Sherman/Philbin's.

Therefore, I have an incredibly difficult time giving Philbin much credit for this year's improved offensive game-planning & half time adjustments in a system that he, himself, had to learn along with everyone else, a system that he conveyed some hesitancy and apprehension about during the offseason when asked about how long he would stick with it or something to that effect. Plus, Philbin is an offensive-minded coach with no defensive experience, so I'd have to put most of the defensive game-planning and halftime adjustments on Koyle.

Handling of players: D. If Philbin had it his way and didn't face heavy opposition from the organization, Matt Moore would've been promoted to starting QB against Oakland after Tannehill's slow start. Who knows what would've happened from there. This move would've also transcended Miami's game plans and in-game decisions. Joe essentially dissolved Miami's respected leadership council, and he was unable to motivate important, talented players like Vontae & Dansby [among others] who both immediately went on to impact their successive teams. When presented with players in need of some direction or reform, Joe's preference seemed to be to cast them off rather than spend time motivating and encouraging them to bring out their best. Furthermore, player development was typically either very low or regressive during Joe's first 2 years, partly because of Joe himself and partly because of his poor choice of coaching hires who left players feeling like they hadn't learned anything from their positional coaches all season. Where's the versatile, talented Dion Jordan we drafted? He's now a sluggish 275+ pounder b/c the staff wanted to turn him into a big DE.

Game decisions C: Philbin is an offensive-minded guy who had never been a head coach. I think that showed greatly his first 2 years. What's changed? We're still losing close games, are still randomly getting curb-stomped when we shouldn't be, are still blowing 4th qtr leads, and are still losing critical games that we weren't outplayed in. Lazor's offense however has tremendously increased our ability to convert 3rd Downs, is #1 in the NFL at getting to the redzone, and is #3 in the NFL in redzone TDs. Even when we're back to square one at RT & LT against the likes of Von Miller & Demarcus Ware, a situation that would've killed us last year, we're putting up 36 offensive points.

If it's believed that teams frequently take on the persona of their head coach, Miami would certainly support this belief with how flat and emotionless we came out the final 2 games last year and with how we as a team don't yet seem to have that killer mentality when games are close down the wire. Our guys seem to have a gladiator-arena mentality when we're playing great and have a comfortable lead, but that seems to change to a library-arena mentality consistent with Joe's when games are tight. I don't think every coach needs to be an outspoken, rah-rah, motivational type guy, but then again- not every HC possesses Bill Belichick's level of coaching ability, especially not a first time HC who would greatly benefit from those intangibles that inspire players to both reach for their very best and run through a wall for him and the team. Did you watch Miami's defense Sunday? You could visibly see them give up in the 4th quarter while we still had a 28-25 lead. Players standing around. Loafing. No longer gang tackling. Not aggressively finishing plays. Displaying frustration in their body language.

Another minus on the pile is Philbin's low tolerance for players who are deemed 'difficult'---great players often have egos, and these egos can be managed with a strong enough personality at top. Having a coach who is so skittish on this spectrum is one more handicap in our ability to get star players. Any one think we could use Vontae Davis / B Marshall right about now?

I don't agree with this respectfully. Bill Lazor didn't have Albert and a solid 1st round RT on board against Von Miller & Demarcus Ware but that didn't prevent his offense from scoring 36 points. Meanwhile, Sherman couldn't break 19 points against a weak Bucs' defense that ranked 21st in points and amassed just 8 sacks from their defensive ends all year. The 19th ranked Jets D held us to 7 pts in week 17. The 20th ranked Bills D shut us out week 16. Then the 19th ranked Jets D held us to 7 pts the following week.

This operates under the assumption that Philbin's decision making is infallible, when in reality- coaches get fired all the time for bad decisions, and I've personally seen nothing from Joe to suggest his decision making is spot on for him to get any benefit of the doubt.

    So..
    a. blowout loss is all the head coach
    b. close loss shows the coach is not clutch
    c. close win shows Tannehill/the players are clutch
    d. blowout wins have nothing to do with the head coach

    Seems fair...

Lazor ruined us this year, as far as the record and the playoffs go. The theme for the first part of the season was slow starts. Couldn't score point in a few games the whole half. Also, failed to run the ball and milk the clock when we had leads. So if you're looking at the reason why we could't close games on offense, look no further than Lazor. I am convinced if we had Sherman this year, we'd be 8-3. It is what it is, dude is douche, we have to wait for him to grow.

    Exactly.
Our +66 point differential is 7th best in NFL. It's +54 more than 7-3-1 Cincy, +46 more than 7-4 Cleveland, and +41 than 7-4 Pitt.
We beat 9-2 New England 33-20 and crushed 7-4 San Diego 33-0.
We had 4th qtr leads against 8-3 Denver, 8-3 Green Bay, and 7-4 Detroit, two of which could easily represent the Super Bowl.
We're 1 of 2 teams to rank top 10 in both pts scored and pts allowed.
We're the only team to rank top 10 in pts scored, pts allowed, pts differential, and turnover differential.
We're 1 of 4 teams to rank top 10 in Passer Rating and defensive Passer Rating allowed.
We have 4 games of 33+ points, and defensively have 5 games allowing 14 or less.

Yet somehow we're praying for miracles to make the playoffs while the friggin' Browns have a leg up on us. Need we say more?

    a. yes when those blowouts are to teams that shouldn't be blowing you out, especially when the game is close midway.
    b. Yes. When the team blows 4th quarter leads time and time again, "clutch coaching" isn't the first thing that comes to mind.
    c. What close wins? Philbin usually gives those away to our opponents.
    d. Yes. When Lazor's offensive system/scheme, previously unfamiliar to Philbin, blows out a defense, most of that credit goes to Lazor. When Koyle's scheme, which is filled with talented players, blows out an opposing offense, the offensive-minded Joe Philbin gets little credit for that defensive success [unlike an experienced defensive-minded head coach like Rex Ryan or Bill Belichick].

What does a high point differential mean to you? Why are you even interested in that stat?

    The leaders:
    Bill Belichick
    Mike McCarthy
    John Harbaugh
    Chuck Pagano
    John Fox

    or:
    Tom Brady
    Aaron Rodgers
    Joe Flacco
    Andrew Luck
    Peyton Manning

Both lists are impressive but personally I would take any of those QBs over any of those head coaches (maybe not Flacco).

Like any coach that comes here, I have to give him his time no matter whether it's my style or not, I've seen coaches that I can't stand be successful, I guess when it comes to head coaches I'm more willing to be patient..I know how I feel in my gut but I just don't know, maybe we need his kind of style down here.?

Ftr, I wasn't a fan of the hire once I saw hard knocks, so I'm just giving him his three year time frame..if he wins four out of five, which I think we will, how do you wanna go about this? There has to be something were not seeing if that happens.

We need to wait. Philbin doesn't excite me, but the team looks improved to me. Have they improved enough?

With Tannehill, it seems like the light has come on. Do we risk giving him another thing to adjust to next year?

There are fair points for keeping Philbin and there are fair points for firing him. May as well let the rest of it play out and see how they finish this season. A finish like last season weighs the scale heavily in favor of firing, IMO.

    Not on defense.

We had two young guys who performed well in the secondary in 2013, Caroll and Clemons, and got two older guys who are not upgrades in Finnegan and Delmas. Now we are in a situation where we are basically starting rookies this or next year, or old farts in the secondary. Carroll in particular was better than Finnegan as a more athletic DB. We had a chance to lock up two solid and young guys and we failed to do that. No improvement, and future uncertain there.

We had Soliai and traded him for Mitchell essentially, while keeping Starks. No improvement there and we are likely worse off for not keeping big Paul while keeping Starks. We will be forced to draft a big and start undersized front or rookie front again.

As far as linebackers, Misi at MLB has been an improvement over last year. The outside LBers are a wash.

On offense, the system is essentially the same with some tweeks. They cut out the plays where RT holds the ball a little longer, the depth of receivers is shorter, so the ball gets out quicker, sacks are down, drives do not stall as much.

We added zone read option and improved run blocking with more athletic interior linemen, over Cog and Jerry. Drives are better due to that. On the negative, we don't use that enough to our advantage, we don't run enough.

Positions-wise of significance, we added Landry and Moreno, one worked out, one did not.

Offensively coaches improved the system and personnel. Defensively, we are not improved, although the secondary and interior DL moves can be considered a wash with overall improvement in LBers. Not enough tho imo, because we lost some athleticism in the secondary and punch up front.

Sometimes I really miss the days of being a much less educated fan. It wasn't even that long ago that I would just find out who the coach and starting QB would be on opening day.

People do the same thing with Ross, they try to make a big deal about Hickey not being his first choice, as if they actually know anything. Even if true so what if he wasn't his first choice? Was Tom Brady Belichick's first choice? The day actual results takes a second fiddle to hearsay from god knows where is the day I hope I quit being a fan, myswell just spend my Sunday afternoons watching TMZ at that point.

Here is a test of your real feelings:

Say we fire Philbin and the Jets fire Ryan.

    The Jets hire Philbin.

No matter who we hire, does anyone really fear getting outcoached in the two games a year vs the Jets going forward??

We play them this week and we're 7 point favorites on the road. In fact, no other road team is a bigger favorite this week, so what does that tell you? It wasn't even that long ago a lot of Dolphins fans tried to claim Rex is the much better coach.

We are a team that nobody wants to play. I guarantee Belichick will not be happy about getting to play the lowly, terribly coached Dolphins if that game in December has any meaning.

Rex is a great defensive x's and o's coach.

He is also known as a motivator, but the problem [to me] is that he seems to try to be one of the guys rather than the leader of the guys. I think coaches like that tend to get tuned out after a while.

I can't say what Philbin is great at, and I'm not sure he's a motivator. Maybe that means he won't get tuned out; I don't know what it means.

I wouldn't trade teams with the Jets; I know that. The Dolphins have better players than the Jets. As for the coaches, I think the Jets have a slight edge, but nothing worth getting worked up about.
