Yes there is. I read that he actually told his offensive coordinator, Jimmy Raye, that he wanted a high school offense. That said, bad head coaches do not do what Jim Harbaugh did. I don't think even average head coaches do what he's done. 3 straight title games, one Super Bowl appearance, all one score games, I believe.
That's the problem. He is only "ok". A lot of people, including myself, don't think he will ever be more than "ok".
What I'm wondering is that if the talent on the team before Harbaugh was actually better than their record indicated. Maybe they were a talented team all along and Singletary was holding them back?
Of course he was holding them back. Jim Harbaugh took basically that same roster and made them a 13-3 juggernaut. I think the obvious conclusion from that 1 year swing is that Mike Singletary was a bad coach and that Jim Harbaugh is a good one. I'm not sure what the argument is here. Do you feel like Jim Harbaugh has elite, far and away best in the NFL type of talent, and that all he has to do is not get in the way of it? Because I don't. I think it was pretty impressive that he went to the NFC title game with Michael Crabtree, Kyle Williams, and Ted Ginn as his best three options at wide receiver, catching passes from a quarterback everyone had given up on as a bust for years, and actually got a really good offensive performance out of them to get there.
Yes but what does Don Shula have to do with anything? Something tells me he's finished with the game and the game is finished with him. Meanwhile, Philbin as a head coach couldn't get through 2 losing teams to reach the playoffs when it was ripe for the taking. Wait, are you suggesting we somehow pickpocket Mike McCarthy from the Packers? Good luck with that.
Ireland paid more for Wilson than Renaldo Hill and Andre Goodman got from Denver that offseason, combined. Both were decent middle of the pack players for us in 2008, then Ireland completely ignored them when free agency opened. Had we resigned them, and not signed Wilson, maybe Ireland would have not gone for a corner in the 1st, and took Clay Matthews instead.
I think our good friend Dez is referring to the ring Philbin got as an Asst Coach. Philbin is likely the main reason the Packers won that Super Bowl.
I think a good equation here is that, with Harbaugh, you beat the Chiefs at home. Without, you lose by 19...and they were less many more starters.

How can you give Ireland credit for Wake, when all the Ireland fans claim he had nothing to do with the drafts or free agent signing while Parcells was running the team? Perhaps you forgot, but Wake was signed as a free agent while Parcells was still having Ireland running out to pick up his coffee and dry cleaning.
Deej, his game was not that great last I heard in th 4th quarter he was at 157 yards passing but not sure what he finished with.
He knows what he is doing. He rubs some people the wrong way clearly, but I don't care, I don't have to deal with him. He wins and takes teams to Super Bowls (and he desperately wants to win one after losing one) and NFC Championship Games, a place the Dolphins haven't been (AFC of course) since Shula was coaching. 22 years and counting since getting a chance to make it to the Super Bowl... He probably won't come here though. Just like Manning who wanted nothing to do with the Dolphins front office. But...maybe that's why they've gotten Marino & Taylor around (and Ireland out)
hes just pacing himself, he knows exactly how to win, he knows what level he has to play at to win playoff games, he's a great player, an unconventional great qb.
I guess you forget that he was probably the best DC in the NFL prior to taking the HC job with the Jets. If he is fired by the Jets after this season and he does become a DC again, the team who gets him are going to be a force on the defensive side of the ball. You might not like him as the Jets HC, but he would be a definite upgrade over Coyle as the DC of this team. I bet he could find an effective way to utilize Jordan in the Dolphins defense. Unfortunately I don't see Ryan or Harbaugh with the Dolphins next year.
Is appears to me that Stephen Ross has been possessed by the spirit of Al Davis. Someone please call an excorsist, the ghostbusters or the little munchkin lady from the poltergeist ASAeffinP!!!
Major concern for me with Rex, if Harbaugh pisses off the team and leaves by force or on his own, would that make Rex the de facto HC?
I think the biggest problem with Rex, is he had a terrible GM not selecting any talent for him to coach. No WRs, No OL, no QB. It's hard to win with no talent.
Unlike some of the reporters that have been reporting on this situation with Harbaugh and the 49ers, Jay Glazer has a pretty sterling reputation. According to Barry Jackson's latest post, he says that Jim Harbaugh won't be back in San Francisco even if the 49ers were to win the Super Bowl. It looks like the disagreements between he and management are just too strong. Basically just like the Shula-Colts situation before he signed with Miami.
He's a good defensive coordinator, that's for sure. And his players play hard for him, that's also for sure. I'm just really troubled by a lot of things I've seen out of the Jets in the latter stretch of his tenure there and I'd be really concerned about hitching my wagon to him.
Rex was a good DC but he doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who could easily go back to playing second fiddle. It would take very strong HC to keep him in check. Harbaugh might be able, I doubt Philbin could.
Imagine Harbaugh with the Raiders? Looks like he doesn't want to leave the Bay Area.. Wonder how much of a stretch it would be for him to move to South Florida... Ross should offer him a waterfront mansion off Las Olas as part of the package to entice him to come down.
Under a guy like Philbin he would become the de facto head coach of the team. Which wouldn't be such a bad thing, IMO. Rex Ryan's big weakness is he doesn't necessarily know what a good quarterback looks like, how he should be handled, or what a good offensive coordinator looks like and how he should be handled. People make a big deal about the Jets being a disorganized mess but this incident with Geno Smith is not IMO a sign of their organization or disorganization. It's purely personnel based. Geno Smith was doing this kind of thing at West Virginia and he never had a proper leader's temperament. It tells you something that nobody else missed that meeting. You're 1-3 with all kinds of issues on the offense (mostly personnel-based, IMO)...you're making a cross-country trip to a 4-1 team's home stadium and you get your butt whooped. That will happen. It's not evidence Rex Ryan is a bad coach. I'm actually amazed, continually, at the way he can get his team to play despite the personnel issues they have on offense. Who do they have at receiver? Their big name there basically played 3rd fiddle in Denver. Otherwise they've got David Nelson, Greg Salas and Jeremy Kerley? Really? And Jeff Cumberland at tight end, who should be a #2 but he has to be a #1 because Jace Amaro is only a rookie and of course he's going to look and play like a rookie at times, and the coaches have to protect the offense from his potential rookie mistakes. It's not like Breno Giacomini was ever GOOD at right tackle. D'Brickashaw Ferguson is 31 years old and may be reaching the end of his rope. But he's their 2nd best OL, amazingly. Then they sign Chris Johnson which many of us could tell was going to be a disaster. And of course it comes back to the QB position where they're trying to force Geno Smith in as the franchise player. He's awful and a bad leader. And Mike Vick isn't much better. He didn't even want the starting job this summer and made it pretty clear. I appreciate a lot about John Idzik's approach and his general philosophies, but he's not been doing that team any favors.
The last time the Raiders were interested in Harbaugh as a head coach, he refused to take their call. LITERALLY. Insiders say it's because he had extreme respect for Al Davis whom he considered to be one of his mentors, and didn't want to be forced into an uncomfortable position of having to tell his mentor no, and also to tell him WHY the answer was no. The answer was no because he hated the Raiders organization and upper management and didn't much like the idea of Al Davis constantly meddling. None of that has really gotten any better since Al died. Mark Davis would have to welcome both Jim Harbaugh and Michael Lombardi back to the organization, and offer them complete control of everything with a promise of no meddling by him or any of the other executives. Will he do that?
If he was smart, yes, yes he would. Lombardi has been proven more right than wrong on picks while in Cleveland, and Harbaugh could actually get that organization back into shape (by more right than wrong, I mean the selection of Hoyer specifically)
What I appreciated about what Lombardi did in Cleveland even in just one year was how he liquidated bad assets (Trent Richardson) and immediately began trading current picks for more valuable future picks which is essentially pure arbitrage in my opinion. And you're right...he's been right on the money about Hoyer.
I think he would. The Raiders are going to clean house more than likely so Harbaugh would be able to place not only his coaches but probably the front office personnel as well. If he likes David Carr I would think he'd be on that job.
That's the other thing. I doubt he likes Derek Carr. I don't think Jim Harbaugh trusts Mark Davis to be a hands off owner. Trust is huge for Harbaugh especially coming off this experience in San Francisco.
Isn't that a major flaw for a HC? I agree that flying to the west coast to face SD was a tall order but in his post game news conference Ryan admitted he was out-coached. The personnel issues sound like a lot of excuses that could also work for Philbin. Who were our WRs in his Philbin's first year, OL last year etc.... Ryan has been with the Jets for 6 years and has had 2 different GMs. At this point, the Jets team should be built to his liking. Yet under his tenure they have at best remained mediocre and at worst regressed.
