The major offensive failure is with Bill Lazor, not Ryan Tannehill

I don't usually mess with Pate when it comes to schematics, but I think this is a personel issue at qb, not just the physical skillset but the intangible part of the skillset.

Essentially we have a strict pocket qb with very questionable pocket feel and touch, who doesn't lead very well.

I say strict pocket qb because that's what he is, phillip rivers has 3 times more rushing yards and I certainly would categorize rivers as a strict pocket passer.

I saw a lot of plays left on the field because of tunnel vision..

A coordinator will never get perfect execution, there must be an element of playmaking ability, throwing or running..we're getting the bare minimum in that dept from the position..

Yet he ran for 6ypc last year and this year it plummets to 2.3

The question is why is that happening? All the talk about Tannehill saying they're focusing a lot on his footwork and throws and then him seeming hesitant to take off running this year makes me think they want to keep him in the pocket, which is ******ed if true.

 

i told you guys last year, after watching the last few games from last year you see how many times Tannehill left points on the field with Open WRs or TE (dion sims) down the seem for a walk in the park TD stroll.

RT17 has NEVER EVER even dating back to his college years gone from his 1st read to his 3rd consistently or fast enough or even at all. If you need 4 yards on 3rd down and his 1st read is the slot on a slant, he will NOT take his eyes off that man until either A) he throws the incomplete pass or B) it takes more than 5 seconds and then he just ****s **** up. Today for example, he had Thomas in the flat open for the 1st down 2x and never ever went to him because his 1st read was locked in and guess what? the two players were almost in the same area so it wasn't like he had to flip his head the other way to see the guy thats wide open. He even did it on 3rd and a few yards to Landry while he had Hartline chasing nearly a few yards behind open for the 1st and instead forced the incomplete pass.

RT17 since College reminded me a LOT of Sanchez during the Jets AFC Champ run years. Locks in and that its, game over. Very robotic, can't create, can't sense the collapse and make something out of nothing let alone doing it with ease, You can clearly tell the game for him is very fast still and no where near where it should be, which is pretty slow, slow enough to read the field. Watching Wilson during the game winning drive today you saw the difference in composure and how slow the game is for him.

RT17 is done, he is going to be your expensive and very good 8-8 QB and nothing more.

Clay is no where to be found in this scheme, Hartline just blows. Gibson is what he was, Rams #3 option. Our WR core is not good, never understood why people called it "the strength of our team."

Who in that core is a game breaker? A game changer? YAC player? Shifty? Has agility outside of falling down face first ala Hartline? Has fast twitching hips? Has the ability to separate? One guy has a couple of those and its wallace, the rest simply lack those physical traits. There was an angle from RT17 today where it showed him take the sack instead of running for the 1st and you saw all 4 of his WR blanketed and not only that but the angle they ran the routes at was horrendous, they were all BEHIND the DB so not only covered but not even visible. Same way Wallace runs a deep route often with only 10 inches of space between him and out of bounce paint. This team still is pathetic talent wise in skill positions. you don't add Olinemen and think all of a sudden we have players with an IQ or the physical abilities they lacked because they never had it.

 

You apparently forgot the vaunted Chris Foerster offense of early 2004.

 

Whatever faults Tannehill may have, a weak arm is not one of them.

 

Not only possible, but likely. I'm not advocating benching Tannehill, but if Matt Moore ever comes in and plays like he did in the pre-season, we may have our answer. I'm sure our WR's will still drop his passes too, and our O-line will let him get beat up. But at least will have a 1-1 comparison.

 

I don't get it when it comes to RT's receivers and dropped passes. It seems to me Landry, the supposedly sure handed one, has more drops since he's been with Miami than he did all the years he was at LSU. When RT was a senior at TAMU, I read he led the nation in most dropped passes, at least among BCS schools. Does he throw a ball that is particularly hard to catch, even when he is spot on with his accuracy ?

 

I rarely see RT throw a tight spiral. It usually looks like a wounded duck to me.

 

There once was a coach named Shula who made a career out of doing this. Perhaps you've heard of him.

 

Sherman wasn't at Philbin's side. He spent the games up in the booth.

 

I see that too, and it gets very frustrating. If no one is open, throw it away or run, or go get an early start on your medical career.

 

Being able to accurately throw a football is very much a physical issue.

 

I blame Philbin for not firing Lazor on the field after the final whistle. That's what needed to be done and that is what I would've done. I'm waiting for that news, that's important.

 

You were talking up our having a cutting edge offense a few days ago.

 

We do have a fantastic offense, but we have an idiot for OC. If he is not fired yet, it's several hours too late.

I'd call Sherman back to finish the season if no one else is available. At this point it's about salvaging what's left of the confidence and discipline of the team, gotta stop the bleeding first. We have a complete disaster on our hands with Lazor.

Worst YPA. Disention in the WR ranks, WRs dropping balls. RT regressing. WRs doing knucklehead things, Landry and Hartline. Playcalling, preparation, awful, we are losing games because of him. It is a complete disaster and this team cannot have Lazor any longer in the facility, not a moment more.

Sure he bears responsibility. But he is untouchable. I am for improvement of this system and this team. I am not for do over. I do not believe in any other system or available HC over Philbin. I believe in what we have. We need improvements.

meh philbin is a lame duck coach and tannehill is a wr who should have never been drafted. Should of just cleaned house with Ireland instead ross does what ross does waits a year too late. Hopefully we can just get rid of all the Ireland garbage and start fresh.

 

Tannehill's regression started during the last two games of last year. We now have five consecutive mediocre to poor performances from him. He looks overwhelmed.

Perhaps the OP is right, and that it's the OC's fault, but I'm only pointing out that this originated before he got here.

Right now, Lazor is the Obama of OCs - sounds good during press conferences, but sucks in practice.

 

In his first year as the starter, Tannehill was allowed to use his limited experience as a QB and a lousy WR corp as his excuse.

In year two, it was the terrible OL and the play calling of Sherman which was his excuse.

Now it is Lazor who is suppose to be the reason Tannehill has played so badly this season.

While Lazor may not be the big upgrade as the OC many thought he would be. Perhaps the real problem is that Tannehill is running out of excuses for his poor play and the reality just might be, he just isn't anything but a below average QB and that is the best he will ever be.

 

tannehill was ripping it the first three qtrs. In the 4th the wheels came off. How many points did we score while tanny was playing well? That tells you all you need to know about the rest of the offense

 

100% agree with disgustipate. We're not even running the plays that we know tannehill can run in his sleep. For two years tanne to hartline on the outroute was money. They could run that route with they're eyes closed. Now we don't even run it, instead we get slants that no one can catch. Lazor doesn't have tthe luxury of waiting for personnel that fits his system, he won't be here long enough.

 

I think Tannehill's been poorly coached throughout his whole carreer, NFL and college, simply put. Coaching is about putting your players in positions to succeed and helping them become the best they can possibly be, and I just don't see that happening with Tannehill.

I think he played well in a couple of instances of the game, and looked lost in others. I think at this point he might be that type of QB who'll only succeed if they have an All-pro OL blocking for him, because when he's pressured and the pocket collapses he just doesn't know what to do. I think it might be time to put in Matt Moore, if only for the sake of finding out if QB really is the problem, or if it's the coaching.

 

Agreed all day on the Lazor point. He was crowned as a genius before he ever set foot on the practice field so of course the blame for failure has to go elsewhere.

 

And in the absence of definitive information that can refute that, and given the low success rate of NFL QBs in general, that'll be the most parsimonious explanation. All other explanations will be less likely to be true.

 

Tannehill came into the league with "training wheels" (his college system and coordinator) and played no better than average for two years. He didn't "secretly suck," but he had advantages that few early-career NFL QBs do, and he played no better than average overall despite them. Now that the training wheels have been removed, he's faltering considerably.

Now, should we blame that on a coordinator who had Nick Foles going off like gangbusters in a similar system right out of the gate, or should we blame it on Tannehill?

 

Bill Lazor had a very large hand in the design of the gameplans that launched Nick Foles career. he was also the guy that communicated with Foles the most during a game week.

The circumstantial evidence is.......he's good at his job.

Now, for our Quarterback.....
