Joe Philbin gave up on this game...

And by the early part of his 3rd season, Dan had already shown he was a QB god, and had earned the right to react however you believe he would have. Whether on the sideline or how he'd have handled things on the field. Ryan is still a wannabe early in his 3rd season.

I don't think RT's stats are really any better. Tannehill has a better TD-rate and INT-rate. Henne has a better NY/A. I would probably even say that Tannehill has better passing stats.

But Ryan Tannehill has 19 fumbles in 34 games. Chad Henne has 17 in 63 games. That probably evens them out IMO.

Our passing game had 7 net yards in the first half. Negative yards in the second quarter. Zero plays run in Buffalo territory in the first half.

Considering all that we could have easily only been down by only 2 points had the refs not blown the whistle on Gibson's TD. Or Tannehill threw a better ball on Gibson's second attempt at a TD.

The decision to run the clock out had no bearing on anything. If Tannehill's pissed Philbin didn't let him try there then ****ing do something on all of those other possessions. You know you are supposed to be trying to score every time we have the ball right? That is kind of your job. Its OK to have a little urgency even in situations outside of the 2 minutes at the end of halfs. JUST DO SOMETHING! ANYTHING!

This exactly. Glad someone around here sees things objectively.

It seems to me, although I could be wrong, that the posters most outspoken against how Philbin played the final 2 minutes of the 1st half, were already pretty much ant-Philbin before this game. Not all, mind you. Just most. Nothing like taking an opportunity to pile on a little bit more.

I thought about that but you aren't driving the ball 90 yards running it all the way even with the timeouts. You have to make an up front decision to either go for it, and go for it through the air, or run the clock out. What would have been interesting is if Buffalo called a timeout after the first running play. Typically coaches will be content with letting time run out but if the other coach uses a timeout for them then they'll go for it. I'm not saying that's what Philbin was thinking because usually there is a lot less time on the clock in that scenario but it would have made things interesting.

If Tannehill had the kind of talent everybody wants him to have, he'd be impervious to anybody else's lack of confidence. How would Dan Marino or Joe Montana have played with an unconfident coach? Poorly, or with the talent that would've become evident no matter what?

Over their careers, Tannehill's been sacked on 7.8% of his pass dropbacks, and Henne's been sacked on 7.0% of his.

From what I've seen this far, I don't think that Philbin is "the" coach. He has this year to take us to the promised land, if he fails, then it should be all she wrote.

Ya know, you can be condescending all you want. Not going to make it wrong, or right for that matter. But hardly an implausible theory.

If a manager/superior in just about any job shows lack of confidence in your ability to do your work, that can hinder your own confidence and/or performance.

Joe Philbin has the best interests of his team to look out for. He can't cater to Ryan Tannehill's confidence at the expense of the team. Ryan Tannehill has to play well and generate his own confidence.

This is Ryan Tannehill's third year as a starter in the NFL. He shouldn't be nursed along like a rookie anymore. He has a team to carry, and a coach who should be able to count on him. If he doesn't have the talent to pull that off, he's going to have to face the music.

That's true but things are significantly different. You're talking about one of the all time greats in his prime... Tanny isn't quite there yet, we all know that. And don't kid yourself, if Shula had ordered the plays to be runs, they would have been runs, particularly in Marino's first couple of years.... All that said, Philbin did say that it was HE that ordered the runs at the end of the half to avoid potential turnovers and give the Jills another chance to score... That's not to say I'd have done it differently, but that's how he felt the team needed...

lmao at Cote. Some people still don't get it. He wants Tannehill unleashed beyond 53 passing attempts. Well we know what that looks like, and it ain't pretty.

Bill Lazor did a great job playing the good soldier and toeing the company line while also making it crystal clear with the first words out of his mouth that he had absolutely nothing to do with that decision to be a gutless coward at the end of the half.

Its funny that people are still looking at Lazor like he's some kind of savior. Before "the decision" Bill Lazor orchestrated our offense to 23 total yards in almost an entire half of football.

    TWENTY. THREE. YARDS.

I think objective is a better term. I think it's less about cowardice and more about the state of the team when Coach made the decision to get to the half knowing we would get the ball back to start the second half and give the team every opportunity to catch up after regrouping. that's easier down 9 points than possibly 12 or 16. right or wrong cowardice had nothing to do with it.

It can be both Philbin being a weak coward (it is) and him not having any faith in the offense because the offense is poop (also is).

As already alluded to previously in this thread, Philbin's strategy wasn't sound on many levels. Running the ball 3 times could have easily led to a 3 and out or (even worse) a fumble (it's not like the RBs are somehow immune to turnovers) and put he team in the precise situation Philbin was attempting to avoid.

But even if the original thought was to take down the clock, once the offense got some breathing room and got nearer to midfield with ample time and timeouts left, the strategy SHOULD have shifted to trying to take 3 points and bridge the gap.

He quit on those players, pure and simple, because he was playing scared of a statistically unlikely worst case scenario. There isn't any amount of mental gymnastics that can explain that reality away...

I don't think Philbin is the right guy for the job, but I also think "blatant, egregious act of coaching cowardice" is a bit extreme. Life is about choosing one's battles. It's not like he had Tannehill take a knee at the end of the game with a chance to win. Philbin saw a chance to minimize risk and go in at halftime and regroup. IMO, that's what the team needed at the moment. That offense was getting dominated in every way it could be dominated. I'm not sure that was going to change without a 15 minute break.

Another thing, many people seem to think this decision was only an indictment of the QB and the offense, but it's also Philbin saying he didn't trust his defense to keep the Bills from scoring if they did give them back the ball. You think those defensive players respect that lack of trust in their ability?

Philbin undermined every player's pride with this dumbass strategy, and you can bet this will be burning in their minds if the team continues to struggle under Philbin's leadership.

Things got away from Wanny, Cam Cameron and Sparano for similar reasons, because the players lost respect for the coach. Once respect is lost, things can get really bad in a hurry.

and if Philbin did press on when we got the first down and we ended up 3 and out or fumbled the ball or threw an interception (which any of those to that point was more statistically possible since we hadn't even been in Bills territory yet) and then give the Bills and opportunity to put more points on the board before the half the response would still have been the same. how could he push the point ? didn't he know that his team wasn't going to get it done? why didn't he get to the half since they obviously could make make solid adjustments like the week before. he clearly doesn't have his finger on the pulse of his team. he's lost the locker room, what was he thinking setting his players up for failure.. it was a no win decision for Coach for a small possibility that they could score at all or press it and not come away further behind. again, not saying I like the call but I certainly do understand it.

his team was in trouble and he wanted the opportunity to be able to regroup none the worse for wear. there was absolutely no indication that the team was capable at that moment to do anything offensively and the D was giving the Bills free rein from 20-20.

Or perhaps the defense respected Philbin for a decision that would likely be criticized, for the effort of proctecting them from having to defend a short field with enough time left on the clock for Buffalo to score, following an aggressive approach that failed?

None of us knows what these players were thinking and feeling, and perhaps there was variation in that regard from player to player. What we do know, however, was that the offense was playing horrendously, and there was no reason to believe it wasn't going to put the team in yet another difficult position just before the half, perhaps demoralizing it even further.

The goal of football is to score more points than the other team. If you don't even try, you've already failed.

A team usually has around 12 possessions a game. To completely WASTE one of those rare opportunities to possess the ball and score is NOT a winner's mentality.

Yeah, that's why the came out in the 2nd half and played like they had no pride. Oh wait! They didn't. In the 2nd half, Miami had almost double the yards from scrimmage as the Bills did.

Because of STs breakdowns. The offense moved the ball pretty well. 228 yards in the 2nd half. The defense was stout, except for one play by Spiller.
My point was, after Philbin was supposedly so awful and cowardly and undermined the player's pride, they did not react like it.

The defense improved in the 2nd half too. Buffalo had great starting field position overall. They started inside Miami territory 4 times. Twice inside the 30. On those 4 possessions they scored 6 points. Our defense did not react like they thought their coach was "gutless", "a coward",
or "had given up on them".
Football is a game of big plays. Other than Spiller's KO return, and his 47 yard run, Miami overall played better in the 2nd half. As for moving the ball, and shutting down Buffalo.
