    SUNDAY BUZZ COLUMN

    ### Even after a 33-point eruption against New England, it was telling that offensive coordinator Bill Lazor began Monday’s film session by detailing a bunch of things the Dolphins did wrong. This, apparently, is what this franchise needs, Mike Wallace said.

“He kind of tricked us,” Wallace said light-heartedly. “He buttered us up in the meetings [this summer], then we get on the field, he’s like a whole different person. He’s a madman. ‘You need to be here, you need to be there, you need to do this!’

“It’s great for our team. We need that. We don’t need anybody out there patting you on the back, trying to make you feel better. We need to get better. Coach [Mike] Sherman was demanding, but coach Lazor is a little bit more critical about every single little detail.

Wow I love those quotes from Mike Wallace. Great attitude.

The package with 5 defensive lineman is something I love and hope we do more and more. That is lethal man. A weapon of mass destruction. It should be banned in all 50 states!

Always love to hear guys like Moreno who talk about how they WANT to be here. Love it!

An interesting situation is whether or not to rip up Moreno's contract and give him a new one or wait til the end and bid..

I know I want to keep that hunger and chip but we also have to Think this dude might be a 1200, 1300 yard back at the end of the year, but yet he also might be that because he's playing with that chip..tough GM decision.

After not being able to land Peyton Manning, Alex Smith, Jeff Fisher, Nick Caserio, Jason Licht, Ray Farmer etc. some thought we were a team that couldn't bring in talent. Personally I never felt we were a team people steered away from purposefully its just a matter of where you feel like you are a good fit. Of course people want to play on a team that has a chance to get them to the big game at some point. Hopefully we can be a winning team and continue to draw in people who fit and want to stay here. It's nice to hear that players are happy and want to be here. Of course everyone probably feels that way at the start of the season especially after spanking the Patriots at the home opener but I'll enjoy it while I can and I think its a positive step to hear them openly state it.

Wonder how long ago the coaches planned to use some 5-2 fronts.
Maybe why Linebacker wasn't as much of a priority in free agency and the draft as some thought it would be.

Glad Hickey hasn't given in and called a vet/Vilma yet.

As we discussed in the Club, they are playing a version of the Bear front, but not exactly the 46.
The Bear front just means mainly that the DL covers both guards and the center. Two men playing 3 or 2 technique and one man playing Zero Technique. To be a true 46, we'd need a 4th down DL playing 7 technique on the weak side. We'd have one backer playing head up on the TE on the strong side, and another backer just outside him. Both in 2 point stances. This would be 6 men on the LOS. The Mike plays 3-4 yards off the LOS, across from the strong side OT, who is uncovered. The SS walks down into the box, and lines up exactly the same as the Mike, but across from the uncovered weak side OT. That makes it a 46 defense. The 46 referring to the number worn by former Bears SS Doug Plank.

If you have five DL lining up on the OL that essentially means the two LBs will be kept very clean. I can see Jenkins and Tripp in particular enjoying this defense with guys like McCain and Jordan enjoying duties in the third down version of this defense. It's very tough to run up the middle against these guys and both Vernon and Wake are strong run defenders in this kind of situation. That makes running the ball a total pain in the *** against them.

Stopping the pass rush is a major chore since you are 1-1 with your OL against a fearsome pass rushing group. The only place I can see the team getting beat is in the intermediate game if the OL holds up against the DL. Even then it's a very difficult endeavor. The opposing team may get a 15-25 yard pass play in but then the next play will take a sack. What I like about it, is that it takes mediocre players off the field. Sometimes you'll have a SLB that can't really do much out there just for the sake of versatility, a LB that can stack and shed really well but can't cover, a DT that can't rush the passer... Etc... This group says no thanks to that.

This alignment basically says we're putting our best on the field and you're ****ed.

This playing a Bear front helps immensely stopping the run inside. I'm all for it if it bottles up their run game and forces EJ to beat us.

I think it's incredibly tough period. What I hadn't realized earlier is that there's a huge difference in the opportunities available to the defense due to the positioning of the DTs. If your DTs are firing from the 2 and 3 technique there is no way that the OT will be able to help stop them in the pass rush. If the DEs on the edges don't rush the passer, the offense has two useless players on the field.

  15. I dont think its that tough. Offer him whatever you think is fair and make it laden with added incentives for reaching certain milestones.

I'd be hesitant with a RB with his running style. If he's running with a chip on his shoulder, he may not last.

Moreno won't last at 24 carries a game either. He's also on a 1 year deal, those can't be extended due to league rules, as we found out with Grimes last year.

Any UFA who signs a 1 year contract with a new team cannot be extended or re-signed until the contract is up.

He is, but he also is just a very mediocre WR at this time. That is why he isn't on the 53 man roster of any NFL team at this time.

Hopefully he can develop into a consistent and reliable WR with the Dolphins, but only time will tell.

I watched him develop at UM and what I can tell you is that he has every tool you look for in a WR. He has great body control along the sidelines. He catches with his hands. He has amazing speed for his size. One thing you have to remember is that he was on IR his entire rookie season and that took valuable time away.

What he needs is a WR coach who will really force him to work on his craft. He needs to be running routes and digesting the offense every day. If he ever gets these things down...he could be a faster Vincent Jackson. If not he will not be on an NFL roster after his practice squad eligibility has run out.

As it relates to the new formation on defense, it's not really "new" as Miami ran a lot of this front in 2012, the only difference being that Cameron Wake kept his hand on the ground...so it's minimal at best. They ran it in 2013, again with Wake's hand on the ground, but Olivier Vernon was playing where Odrick was and Koa Misi was on the outside in the spot that OV now occupies in that front. You can read about it in that Ronin guy's preview if you have Club: http://www.thephins.com/forums/showthread.php?82006-Ronin-s-2014-Defense-Preview

All of the fronts go back to the Eagle principle and mixing fronts within the principle of the defense, which is why you see a lot of Over fronts in base packages regardless of whether they're using a 3 man or 4 man defensive line. The principle is that it allows you to align your best pass-rusher (Wake) with your most athletic LB (Jenkins, of the guys who were active last week), and your box safety all on the same side of the field, regardless of the offense's strength or formation. I think this is why a lot of people get confused when they see guys like Ellerbe and Jenkins playing on the strongside of the formation, while they are still effectively playing a "Will" LB role.

Two things about this interest me, especially with Jones and Jordan coming back soon. With Reshad Jones, he was primarily the box safety in 2012 and had a fantastic season. I'll be interested to see if he reverts back to that role more this year with a more rangy athlete like Delmas playing next to him. Conversely, Delmas is also capable of playing in the box and filled this role last week against the Pats.

With Dion Jordan, I think he can be used effectively in 2 ways with the formation. If you want to disguise it, I think he's big and long enough to play it as a DE when Miami runs a 4 man line. He's also capable of playing in the same spot that OV did last week, which was effectively a 3-4 ROLB (where Jordan played at Oregon). Jordan played this last year a lot in sub packages when Miami was running 3-3-5 looks with shifted fronts on the D-line. He was pretty effective at that role as well: http://www.thechipwagon.com/eagles/...ns-2013-season-part-2-outside-linebacker.html
