What Happens If Satele Turns Out To Not Suck?

Yesterday, Samson Satele, in his first game back home played well against what is thought to be solid competition. What if due to scheme, play-calling, and good coaching, he turns out to be a good player for us? Mike Pouncey, by most accounts, is well ahead of schedule and looking to be back about as quickly as Dion Jordan and Reshad Jones. Below are the questions we're going to need to answer, thankfully they're good questions to have:

    1. Can we add one or two DNP: Coach's Decision to Mike Pouncey in order to ensure full health?
    2. Does Samson Satele get a tryout at guard?
    3. Does Mike Pouncey get a tryout at guard? I know he's practiced at guard before. I'm certain he did early this offseason.
    4. Does having Pouncey and Satele on the field at the same time maximize returns on the line? Colledge was much better than anything last season, but not great.
    5. Is Albert-Pouncey-Satele-Smith-James an top tier offensive line?
    6. Does Satele just become depth while we continue to groom Turner to take over for Smith who would take over for Colledge?
    7. Sure, Knowshon Moreno can see the holes that these guys are creating, but can he see why kids love the taste of Cinammon Toast Crunch?

I think it's an interesting idea to mull. Satele has never been a world beater, but aside from last year I don't think he's been bottom of the league bad. He's always been a mobile guy with average at best power. Can he/should he be given the chance to stay on the field? Do you guys think he will continue this level of play? Obviously if he does, you have to try and make a spot for him.

I don't think you lose anything with Pouncey at Guard. He's an elite player there too. Satele is a big more of an obligate Center.

If Satele continues to play well, I think it makes sense for Pouncey to step in at RG, where he played at Florida. He could man the LG position well too, but I think we're set with Colledge for now. Smith I think is the weak link of the line but he held up ok yesterday too. Colledge has been a starter most of his career while Smith was a backup. So Im thinking RG is where he'd go. Now will Pouncey accept a position change? Not sure. Satele on the other hand hasn't played G in a long time, he's been a career center. Not sure if plugging him in at G would be a good idea. Pouncey at least started out as a G and played it until his senior year, then transitioned to Center. He's also practiced at gaurd during his time here. He's also just a better overall OL than Satele. We'll cross that bridge when we get there I suppose.

Give it time, and Org politics means Pouncey will be at Center

I always liked Satele's game, but it is just one game and he was really poor last yr, give it some time.

And, Pouncey has been "the guy" since arriving, way Org's work he probably still will be

When Satele was in Oakland, they ran a ZBS, and he did pretty well. At least their productivity as a running team produced decent results. They averaged for the season, 4.2, 4.1 and 4.5 rushing in his 3 seasons at Center. In 2011, they ran for over 2k.

In the 5 games now that the Dolphins have played the Pats with Satele at Center, we ran the ball for 191 yards @5.0 a carry, 66 yards @3.7, 216 yds @6.0 (Wildcat unveiling), 108 yards @4.9, and 179 yards @6.0 a carry. So we have averaged 152 yards rushing per game against the Pats with Satele at Center.

Satele had 196 pass block snaps in those 5 games and allowed 0 sacks, 1 hit and 4 hurries.

Is this what it's like to not have a GM with his head up his *** 24/7?

Satele played great to be sure and I'm glad to have him, but that said, lets not get carried away just yet. Vince is clearly not where he was prior to his injury and he may not ever again.

Smith sucked at RG, but that's possibly because he's not a RG. He's done his best work at LG and his best work, at least run blocking, has been pretty damn good. Colledge is 32 which makes him 5 years older than Smith. He's on a rental deal as of now. Satele is due for one more multi-year deal as he turns 30 in November. If that deal isn't with us and/or Pouncey doesn't move to Guard, then we'd have two spots to fill with Smith, Turner, Thomas (lol), and Garner. Smith is a LG and has one more year after this under contract. I expect if Pouncey is moved to Guard, Smith competes with Colledge for that spot.

Remember, Smith was viewed as a LG up until the point that everyone realized that Thomas was John Jerry level bad. To preempt the argument that if Smith were better than Colledge at LG, he'd be the starter, this is the same team that felt Dallas Thomas was a starter. I don't know who made the initial call that Smith was worse than Thomas, but I don't have much faith in them.

This staff has routinely held guys out due to any manner of arbitrary reason or rule of thumb. If it weren't for untimely injuries to the starters by default at LB, that game may have played out differently.

I don't get this type of response. It belies not reading the OP clearly and just wanting to respond IMO. I chose my language very intentionally. I've already pretty much brought up both points:

I don't think anyone here has gotten carried away.

Smith didn't suck yesterday. He run blocked well, and was mediocre pass blocking, which is what he was figured to be.

Thomas has not done anything yet to say he is at Jerry's level. Thomas is much worse so far, though could still improve.

Satele playing solid means more recovery time for Pouncey, we won't need to rush him... but next week we'll see if it was a fluke... the Bill's defensive line scares me more than the Patriots'..

Here's a scary question. What happens if Satele turns out not to suck and Pouncey turns out to be a better guard than he is a center?

We'll see soon enough. If you rewatch Moreno TD, you'll see Satele standing there not blocking. We need a more consistent effort everywhere. I would love if Satele can replace Pouncey, because Pouncey will be expensive to keep.

Pouncey to guard, is, of course, the best case scenario. No brainer.

Yeah let's see if this question still holds weight after facing the stout Buffalo D-line.

    Wow...can you imagine.

I think the big elephant in the room with this however is...Pouncey is up for a new contract right?

Does anyone know if a Center makes more then a Guard?

Come on...does anyone think Vince Wilfork just all the sudden became easy to move around? They just did a good job against him. Personally, if Satelle can lock down the Center position and we can keep Pouncey as a guard...holy hell does our OL start to look amazing.

I think the long term implications are even more important. If this line functions well the first several weeks without Pouncey and does not significantly improve when he returns then the FO will need to really question whether it makes sense to resign Pouncey after next season. Even if Pouncey is one of the best centers int he league, if his play doesn't translate into significantly better play by the OL will it justify spending big bucks on the center position?

I think Pouncey is a must sign honestly. If you're not going to re-sign him, you have to trade him. He's WAY too valuable to let him walk.

If this Oline is playing this well for four straight games I would not **** with it at all. Wouldn't even move Puncey to Guard.

I'd trade him for as high a pick or player as we could get.

Maybe we could get LB help from a trade with him. I don't trust Mike P one bit.
