Ryan Tannehill is not a running QB. Period. I keep seeing fans wonder why is it that Ryan doesn't run... Now you know. He's not a runner. Ryan Tannehill is a pocket passer. - IDGAF what his 40 yard dash is. - IDGAF that he played WR at some point in his life. Ryan Tannehill's not going to run out of the pocket at the first sign of trouble. That's not who he is. He's not going to scramble for many yards year to year. That's not who he is. You would think that after two seasons from him, some of you would catch on to the fact that Tannehill doesn't want to/like running. but nope.
are these people complaining that there are no designed run plays for Tannehill or that he doesn't take off running at the first sign of pressure like the running QBs? I know there's also a subset that wants him to bootleg more, which is not the same. This latter option, I'm still waiting to see more. It may be matchup dependent though.
Bootlegs take away half the field in the nfl! They really make no sense at this level! SENT FROM MY LG G-FLEX ON THE NOW NETWORK FROM SPRINT!
I don't think he'll ever be a big running QB like Wilson or Kaepernick, but he'll have his moments where he can use his legs and athleticism as a weapon.
He may not be a running QB but he is a QB who can run quite effectively. I suspect that there are plays designed for him to run and you will see these plays as the year progresses. Tannehill has shown over the past two years that he actually is a very effective passer when he moves out of the pocket. Perhaps even a better passer than when he sits in the pocket. The fact he IS a running threat as opposed to just a pocket passer is a benefit for this offense in my opinion.
That's the main point of the OP which I agree with him. After two seasons and you haven't seen it you're probably not going to see him take plays with no one open and running and sliding when there are open lanes for him to do so.
Not going to try and seem like Im running a comparison, but Aaron Rodgers proves you can be an athletic pocket passer with a hell of a lot of success... I wouldn't hold Tannehill back.
And just to caveat... Tannehill's been running for his life for years haha I have yet to judge his abilities when he has some time.
Heres the theory....He realizes the ball travels faster in the air then when tucked under his or anyone elses arm. And that running qb's get hurt (see Vick, RG3, etc). Run when under duress, roll your QB out to ease the pass rush but I wouldnt support any QB running frequently. Its a recipe for disaster.
Sure we can. RT was trained to do something a specific way for four years. That's not going to change in an offseason.
I really don't want him to be a running QB. I don't mind if he takes off every now and again or keeps the ball on a read option play every so often. He can do it and is good at it. I don't want him to be Randel Cunningham back there. Those type of QB's don't last very long in the NFL.
I don't mind if tannehill runs as a last ditched effort or possibly a designed run every once in a long while, just to keep the defense honest. I like that he doesn't try to take off if his first read isn't there, and I think he'll be a better QB for it. If he can just use his athleticism to extend plays rather than his legs being his main threat, that would be ideal.
This. the problem is people seem to have the expectations of the former. All throughout the game thread people questioned why he didn't run on this or that play. When evaluating Tannehill, he was given negative marks for not running. He is a pocket passer w/athleticism.
Well..all you have to do is look how teams defend the guy. If the defense shows a look that he can exploit..he will..but other then that hes gonna hang in the pocket.
The read option shouldn't be bread and butter, but it's absolutely a viable change of pace with Tannehill's running style. Likewise, the guy has pretty good speed and the ability to throw on the move while running to either side. He did so quite a bit in college, and I think that's something that is a reasonable question as to why it's rarely done now.
If he's not a running QB as you claim him to be, well he better learn how to be. He's not going to have as good protection out there like he did yesterday all the time(see last year). He's not going to always have an open man. He's not on the level of a Manning, Brees or (puke) Brady to be able to throw in tight spaces accurately. He better study film of Wilson, Kapaernick, Newton, and even Luck because he needs to learn how to elude rushers and also pick up extra yards if no receiver is open. Hell Marino was as pedestrian as they come, but he was at least mobile in the pocket. That and his quick release are why he was one of the least sacked QBs during his time.
