I respect your considered opinion, so it's not that I'm casting aspersions; but I do believe that the first 'Avengers' really spoiled us for everything that comes after.

It's like a photo I once saw of Marylin Monroe; a casual shot at some party, and a little kid is holding his hand up to her and I think she's licking something off his finger. And I'm thinking, that poor little bastard has no idea that his life was over at that moment; the his whole existence from then on would be a futile attempt to find any experience that measured up, and failing every time.

We can't watch every movie through the lens of another. It happened to me for years after the first time I saw 'Casablanca;' no matter how good the film, it couldn't live up to what I believe to be the pinnacle of storytelling on film.

'Winter Soldier;' I thought it was good. The scope is what was so enormous about it that it actually takes time to absorb. For me especially; having grown up reading the original comics with 'Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos,' and then the Jim Steranko masterpiece showcase that was 'Nick Fury and his Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'

That S.H.I.E.L.D. could be destroyed, and from within no less, and by an organization thought to be long-defunct; to have that outcome, in the face of everything you've known as a child about that universe—it took a minute or three.

Luckily, I didn't wait until I saw 'WS' to watch the TV series, so I was able to absorb it at a gentler pace. I think that's why the movie didn't have the impact it might otherwise have had on me and my perception of events within.

Anyway, I thought 'WS' was a truly great film in its own right. Season 2 of MAoS starts in 7 weeks or so, and the new 'Avengers' awaits next Summer. This, all put together, is the greatest linear set of masterful entertainment of my time, spread out as it is, over years.

    I'm all in.

Fury "died" because he needed to figure out who was behind the curtain (Redford). Nothing to do with Bucky... And Bucky's was similar to the Joker, specifically in terms of their look. I already stated their personalities are different. And while TDK didn't invent the truck flip, you're ignoring the fact that the truck flip was the same exact shot. It's obvious where they got that material from... Come on now. The movie ripped TDK formula. Not a big deal, but it's true. And every superhero movie is doing it.

As for the ending... TDK's ending was perfect. Hating on TDK and nitpicking it to death is in vogue, so I get it.

p.s. All these Marvel movies need more Cobie Smulders. Seriously. Way more.

yes yes, Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker was such a detriment to the movie.
I feel like you're omitting context here, as well as unintentionally using a straw argument. Firstly, the Joker is arguably the greatest and most historical comic villain of all time, and Nolan and Heath did a fantastic job reminding us. The Joker should be getting more focus and attention than most because of his status, period. IDK, maybe it's just me but I've never heard of an argument where the cast, acting job, and character appeal was "too good". I can't stand movies and shows that feature supporting roles that aren't much more entertaining to the viewer than filler space. I don't know about anyone else but if I'm paying twenty bucks [including food] to see a 2 hour movie, I'd like the half hour to hour's worth of scenes not involving the main character to keep me from yawning.

Secondly, the very nature of the Joker's personality makes him more interesting by default b/c, as we saw with Heath Ledger & Jack Nicholson, there's SOO MUCH freedom and room for dramatic interpretation. Batman on the other hand is pretty much Batman, yet IMO Nolan created the most interesting Batman to date. He shouldn't be criticized simply because he also created the most interesting Joker to date as well. Heck, the Joker is such an interesting character that Nolan could've done a prequel with him had Heath not died, and TDK was perfectly set up for it. I don't think Bale's Batman becomes any less interesting than Captain America simply b/c of the job Ledger did. What you're intimating is that Nolan should've either made the Joker boring or avoided him altogether so that Batman could've completely stolen the show.

Thirdly, of course the villains in Batman movies feature the most interesting story arcs. Their stories typically have to be told from start to finish in one movie, whereas Batman's is more gradual b/c he's a permanent fixture.

Fourthly, WADR I'm not really sure what you're saying here b/c there's praise all over the internet about how great the Winter Soldier's character was and how The Falcon all but stole the show.

I never said it was a detriment in the movie. I just said that the Winter Soldier did a better job at having the main character be the most interesting part in the movie.

I like the movie. I love the Joker.

Falcon was awesome, but didn't take over the movie.

Fury "died" to figure out who is behind the curtain. Gordan "died" to protect his family, while totally playing into the Joker's plan.

Bucky was similar according to look? Now that is a HUGE stretch. They didn't even look similar. They both did have long hair.

It didn't rip off the TDK formula. It did its own thing. It was a spy thriller. There was nothing in the TDK that was a spy thriller. It ripped off Bond WAY more than TDK. You just went into this movie looking for similarities.

No, TDK did not have a perfect ending. It would have been perfect if it ended after he captured the Joker. The Two-Face stuff felt, very anti-climatic.

When I first saw Smulders, I thought she must be Lorraine Bracco's daughter; looks a lot like a younger Bracco, talks a lot like her.

I didn't go into looking for similarities. I didn't know anything about it. All I heard was that was on the level of TDK. It wasn't. In fact, it ripped off many plots, beats, and elements. Clearly the film was Nolanized to the nth degree. To continue to deny it and using trivialities to make your point doesn't change that. And no, TDK ending was perfect. It was a morality play... A metaphorical Othello. The story was incomplete without the Harvey Dent finale. If you don't understand that, I don't know what to tell you.

Winter Soldier was a good summer popcorn flick. That's it. This is getting redundant and I have nothing else to add.

It was boring and anti-climatic, poor story telling. A pretty bad terrible metaphorical Othello. Incomplete story is better than a bad one. Especially since the third movie makes the Joker the victor in TDK.

I guess, agree to disagree. There are only similarities if you try to find them. Winter Soldier was it own thing. It ripped off nothing. I also disagree that it was Nolanized. The Winter Soldier still feels like a Marvel movie. Still able to go "darker" in story line without losing the Marvel charm. DC wishes it can do a film that isn't Batman as good as the Winter Soldier.

I wish Edge of Tomorrow had the original ending of All You Need is Kill instead of the Hollywood version we got. In the source material,
Rita never loses her looping powers and after they kill the "Omega", the day loops one more time because Rita and Cage are both "Alphas" and one has to die in order for the loop to break. Even though Rita is the bad ***, Cage has been fighting with her for tons of loops and knows her moves inside and out. Cage reluctantly kills Rita (who initiated the fight) and breaks the loop.
Hollywood has to have that happy ending though.

I was a big fan of both the TDK and Winter Soldier but don't see them as similar at all. Winter Soldier felt like a Marvel movie. It never felt like a Nolan movie. I liked TDK a little better personally. The only reason that I imagine anybody would have said, "better than Dark Knight" about Winter Soldier is that the Batman series in general was considered the high mark of the genre for a while, but TDK had some detractors. It probably had nothing to do with stylistic or plot similarities. However, once somebody walks in primed to believe that they're similar or related in some way then they're more likely to see similarities even if they're just imagined or very long stretches.

I thought it was a GOOD movie. Nothing more, nothing else. When it came out, that's what I thought it would be...however it kept on getting GREAT reviews across the board, and I thought damn, maybe it will be incredible instead of just good...nope. Just a very good movie, enjoyed it. Better than Captain 2, I'll give it that. It tries to be like Avengers, but it's a bit too corny.

I totally agree with everything except Captain America which I haven't seen yet. I had a hard time buying Bradley Cooper.. and I think it's a shame that real voice actors get passed over for already established actors and actresses. Studio Ghibli does that **** all the time and most of the time it just doesn't work out.

Saw Guardians of the Galaxy. Had a blast. The music really sets a nice tone. Absolutely loved Groot.

A total WTF end of credits scene. Audience was silent the first few seconds until I realized who it was and in my surprise blurted out the name which then sent rumbles of "wtf" through maybe 25% of the crowd. Rest of the crowd obviously didn't know who it was lol. Strangest end clip for a Marvel movie yet.

Also as a big fan of James Gunn's Slither it was cool to see Rooker in the movie.
Also was that Nathan Fillion as the blue creature that Groot takes out when they first enter the prison gen pop?

The Raid 2 might just be the greatest action movie I have ever seen. The first RAID movie was great but this one takes it to a whole other level. The fighting is amazing, the stunts are great, there's humor, cars, women, and an excessive orgy of violence...everything you could want. You must see this!!!!

over the summer ive watched a few movies. for the most part nothing special. the ones that stood out were mostly foreign.

here are a few that i would recommend

The Pusher trilogy- make sure you watch the Nicolas Winding Refn (director) movies and not the Pusher remakes. Its Norwegian (I think) so its subtitled but if you can deal with it you'll see an excellent crime/mafia trilogy

White Tiger-A Russian world war 2 tank/ horror/mystery movie with a moby dick twist to it. very interesting although the pace is a bit slow. its russian. what do you expect?

Capitaine Conan - French WW1 movie based on a french type of special forces. this movie deals with certain moral issues of what do you do with trained killers once the war ends. excellent fight scenes and difficult questions

Page Eight, Turks and Cacos, Salting the Battlefield - British movie. Great Bill Nighy trilogy dealing with modern espionage and politics in Britain

Jack Strong - Good Polish movie on real life hero who fed US Russian secrets during the cold war

Not as laugh out loud funny as I thought it would be. Still, it has its moments. More of a drama than a comedy, I suppose. Nothing wrong with that, but my expectations were out of whack. Still, a strong story. Good movie. And I'm ****ing starving right now too. Those cubano sandwiches looked so good. Reminds me of this little puerto rican bakery I used to visit. The pulled pork sandwiches were incredible. Wish I had one right now...

the kitchen scene is one of the best fights ever filmed! instant legendary status. Up there with the hammer fight in the Korean Oldboy. its funny but every time i talk to someone who just sees the film, thats one of the first things they say....."Holy Sh#$ the kitchen scene". They should change the name of the movie to RAID 2: HoLY sH#$ the Kitchen Scene!

I saw it last week finally as well, and loved it. The director said that it was essentially Avengers 1.5, which I agree with. Critical movie in the Marvel universe. Much moreso than Thor 2 or Iron Man 3 was, for sure.

I really liked Cap 1 though. Gets a lot of flack, but I rank it ahead of either Thor movie, and over Iron Man 2.

I remember seeing some of this movie before, but never finished it. Checked it out again. I know it's not a popular movie by any means, but I liked it. A romance film that takes a turn to the bizarre w/a murder mystery.

I think this could of been a strong 9+/10 contender with a different ending and a trimmed down run time. Remove the sci-fi and change the ending a bit to still deliver a twist and it would of been amazing. The ending as it is, doesn't ruin the story or anything. In fact, the clues placed throughout make it more tolerable than not. Worth a watch if you haven't seen it, IMO. Good acting all around. Tom Cruise killed this role. Penelope Cruz was cute as ****.

Stars Mads Mikkelsen. Quite possibly the most absurd movie I've ever seen. Absolutely hilarious if you love dark comedy. Mads Mikkelsen carries the film as a priest completely detached from reality. His character believes that he's being tested by Satan and the newest member of his congregation (recently paroled Neo-Nazi) struggles to comprehend his madness. The film is Danish, so subtitles are required. I'm not even sure a movie like this could ever be re-made in English... It wouldn't be effective. If you enjoy shows like the Office (british version, not the slapstick American one) then you'll love this film.

    Fury.

Very good movie. 4 out of 5 stars, solid.
Cinematically this movie is beautiful, my only grip with it visualization wise was the very Star Wars esque shooting "bolts" Red and Green coming from machine guns? Not bright or anything like in SW but definitely noticeable "good guy" and "bad guy" fire.

As far as "realism" goes, I get it, it's a movie about a few guys holding off a bunch of guys, some things will be dramatized, no matter how "true" the story is. However some small things were flat out silly.
I'll write it up below, and throw a spoiler tag on it, but I won't really be giving anyway away that you don't see in the trailer and figure out on your own.

The very premise is silly, of course, 1 immobile tank facing a mostly on foot platoon at night? Smoke it and go around. Problem solved lol
At one point one of the characters gets shot with a sniper rifle three or four times, then lives for a good while more making conversation and then gets two grenades dropped next to him to be finally "killed" only for his body to be perfectly preserved. WIelding a 50cal machine gun in the middle of the said platoon in the completely clear to not be shot...ehh c'mon lol

Overall, the movie was very good and I definitely recommend it. I am a fan of most WWII movies because I feel that as time passes, the younger (including mine) generations just don't understand what kind of hell on earth it was, and the **** that people had to go through. It's sad that in next 15 years, there won't be any WWII vets left.
