On December 15 2013, almost unseen, safety Michael Thomas swept in like the Shadow and saved the day. With a few seconds left to play right outside the Fins' own end-zone Phinatics all over were asking, "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of Brady and Belichick?" Soon enough we would learn "The Shadow knows!" Indeed, Michael Thomas would later proclaim, that he knew Brady would be throwing the ball his way. It's one thing to know it, it's another thing to keep calm and act on it, perfectly. We might look at that and ask, like the Shadow, does Michael Thomas have "the mysterious power to cloud men's minds, so they could not see him?" He's a seemingly humble man, Michael Thomas, but does great strength lie beneath? Indeed, what fate lies in store for the young safety? Other heroes have taken the stage in the Dolphins secondary. What do the coaches and front office think of him? After such a legendary start does he truly have what it takes? Will the coaches see that? That's the question - Michael Thomas - The Shadow - will he come out to take the lime-light in 2014, will he have the chance to at least remain in the shadows, or will he leave the stage to haunt the opponents of another team?
I'd love to see him stick around. That game was classic. It's funny that one of the QB's in that game had a career day and one of them threw a clinching INT to a guy who had been with his team less than a week.
He could make the team. It is not like there is a ton of talent at Safety. His main competition is UDFA and Kovacs.
He was at Liberty and it's what Miami has him listed as. That said, he was recruited as a FS and played as a FS at Illinois his freshman year. To further that, he just seems like the oddball at CB. Someone posted the Dolphins roster from Twitter the other day for all the camp guys and Aikens was listed at 6'1" 209lbs. Every other guy on the roster at CB, save Jalil Brown, is a 5'10" or 5'11" guy between 180-195 lbs. I guess you could make a case that Jimmy Wilson breaks that mold, but they've said plenty they're keeping him at safety this year. IMO, Aikens just seems like the odd duck in the group, but who knows?
Yes...I've read a couple times that he could potentially play safety though... Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
EASILY my favorite moment of 2013...hell...look at my sig pic below. I even have a custom 31 Thomas jersey...the kid touched my heart.
yes but thats still a roster spot regardless. At this point our Cbs are grimes, finnegan, taylor, davis and aikens. (5) and our safeties are Jones, Delmas, Kovacs, Don jones, and Michael thomas. (5) If they were going to cut Don Jones, i think they could have done it pretty easily after the Draft due to him being an idiot, so i guess they like him. As of right now we have 10 roster spots dedicated to the secondary. Someones probably going. It could easily be Kovacs instead of Thomas tho.
I think that he has an outside shot at a backup roster spot with a great camp and preseason. Better than most of the other fodder in camp right now. He'll have to earn it and prove it though. Jones was great on ST last season.
you don't cut a guy in the offseason for a stupid twitter remark. Everyone will know he got cut for twitter use. Keeping a guy for a few camps means we won't have the media asking if he got cut for freedom of speech, regardless how stupid he was. (depending on your views)
Don Jones is listed as a CB on the Dolphins website. But, he may be a hybrid. Also need to add Jimmy Wilson to that mix - he's made the team several years in a row though I'd like to see someone else out there. That would be 11 players. Usually teams keep 9-10 DBs - for special teams purposes and depth. There will definitely be competition up and down the group for the final 6 spots or so. I think Thomas has a great chance to win a spot. There is a reason Miami picked him off SF's practice squad. Developing player but has some talent that he flashed. Sometimes it's just keeping your cool under pressure that makes a difference between camp fodder and a bonafide NFL player.
WTH?? Don Jones led the team in ST's tackles last year. Not only that, he is one of the most athletic guys on the roster and has tons of upside. He isn't going anywhere. As for Thomas, the fact that the 49ers were very upset about losing him should tell you something. I find it interesting that they used their 1st round pick on DB Jimmie Ward, who they see playing CB and S. A very similar player to Michael Thomas. They are almost the same size with similar workout numbers. Both are most likely going to be playing nickel and dime roles along with ST's in 14. It may be Jimmy Wilson who needs to worry. Releasing Wilson would save 1.5 mil in cap.
He needs to worry plenty; even Demetrius Wright can play the slot. Finnegan and Thomas will be major competion to play the slot especially if Jamar Taylor wins the boundary CB job. Wright may actually be more than camp fodder. He was a standout player at the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. http://www.conquestchronicles.com/2...t-centric-nflpa-collegiate-bowl-photo-gallery
All I know about Jones is A) He's an idiot and B) He's S**T hot with speed on Madden on specials team and in real life
Has anyone seen/heard anything about Thomas' performance during this offseason, so far? I know it's early days still but I'm curious to see how he's doing.
Jimmy Wilson was one of the better slot corners last season. He was tied for 8th out of 45 in coverage snaps per reception. He was 17th in coverage snaps per target, and 13th in fewest yards per coverage snap. His base salary btw in 2014 is $645k. (Edit). That is according to rotoworld. I see now that other sources show him with a $1.4 mil base salary. That seems out of whack to me, for a 7th rounder on the 4th year of his rookie contract. For example, Daniel Thomas, a 2nd rounder the same year, has a base salary of $816k in 2014 according to the same site that shows Wilson with $1.4 mil base salary.
Here is Wilson's total contract according to rotoworld: 7/28/2011: Signed a four-year, $2.085 million contract. The deal included a $45,900 signing bonus. 2014: $645,000, 2015: Free Agent The two Dolphins pages on overthecap.com appear to contradict each other when it comes to Wilson anyway. http://www.overthecap.com/teamcontract.php?Team=Dolphins http://www.overthecap.com/teamcap.php?Team=Dolphins&Year=2014 Spotrac.com seems to concur with rotoworld: http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/miami-dolphins/ http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/miami-dolphins/jimmy-wilson/ It looks like he has a base salary of about $600k, but if he were cut there would be a cap hit of $1.4 mil or so. What's your take after reading all the links?
Nice post. I did not know that, but I like it a lot. Gives guys some financial incentive to perform and rewards them if they do.
