We could debate how these are dissimilar situations, but it would span many pages and accomplish nothing in changing one another's opinions, I suspect.

But yes, other coaches have turds on their teams. It's how they clean up the **** that differs, imo.

    You're not making sense.

Cowher did nothing to Big Rape, and it took a murder charge before Belichick did anything about Hernandez. Both of those were significantly worse offenses than being a jack *** bigot on Twitter.

You dislike Philbin, which is fine, but holding him or any coach responsible for the stupid **** that roided millionaires do on their own time is ridiculous.

I'm not talking about the outlier big trangressive act.. I'm talking about the rest of the team not massively and continually engaging in public acts of embarssing nature AFTER a ****storm has already occurred. So after the Ben rape, or the Hernandez murder… were Steelers or Patriots roaming around endorsing their 'buddy' publicly, or in any way drawing more public attention to specific issues that would cast the team in a bad moral light… beyond the normal DUI or marijuana / fight in a club stuff that happens on every single team (seemingly)?

Like imagine, post-Hernandez, a Pats player tweeting about something dumb like how cops need to layoff guys who engage in street justice bec they don't understand the code? That would be a dumb follow up to a murder PR mess, for instance.

Or perhaps a Steeler could have tweeted some cool pics of ladies panties with "No Means No" thtat turn into glowing "YES" panties when the lights go off. That would be the kind of stupid follow up that the team wouldn't need in the aftermath of the big outlier event.

Also, a transgressive event outside the playing field is different than a deep, pervasive, ongoing locker room culture issue that set off an NFL internal investigation, imo, inside the franchise.

This is so dumb Barry. Aaron Hernandez killed someone. Belichick's fault, right?

Will Hill got busted for weed again. Coughlin's fault.

If you have an issue with Philbin's leadership abilities, that's fair, but to blame him for someone going on twitter and saying something dumb is moronic. He's not a babysitter or a father.

I can't believe people are actually blaming Philbin for what Jones and Pouncey said on twitter. I'm speechless.

Like these things don't happen to players on every single professional sports team.

Y'all ****ers are so unrealistic believing leadership has no effect. I like ya Rock, but calling my stance dumb deserves some blast back. No one is saying leadership prevents EVERYTHING… but YES it has some effect on behavior of those underneath you in the organization. Watch any one of those Superbowl team things NFL films does… so many players talk about "Oh coach would do this to us if he found out.." or we were scared of getting coach mad… but I guess that **** is all imaginary and coaches have no effect on player behavior. Am I ****ing insane… did last year not happen, or do fans literally think it's NORMAL for a locker room culture like ours to be as pervasive as it is… to the point that to this DAY players speak out against gays publicly… seriously… this doesn't strike anoyone as anything at all to do with messaging or leadership? Like all coaches have this going on to this degree.

There is a spectrum of behavior. There is a spectrum of leadership.

    They correlate.

Because it's not occurring out of REALITY… out of CONTEXT.

The last year DID happen.. we were dragged through the MUD in terms of the character of this club, and it's values, and how out of step with societal mores we are… it played horribly to the world… and Jones was either too dumb to notice it, or doesn't give a **** about this team's image.

Sorry, but I don't agree that Philbin being a better leader would have prevented what Jones said. If that were the case, these things wouldn't be happening all over the sports world like they do so often.

If you want to say Philbin isn't a good leader, then I won't argue, because I believe he does need work in that area.

Fair enough. I think it may have prevented it. We differ on that, though I agree with the rest.

Also, wonder if Hickey will be setting the tempo in terms of talking values. Maybe he can do some of the lifting when it comes to uncomfortable conversations with players since I think Philbin avoids those.

    You can't change everyone's minds.

I just take what Kurt Cobain said in the Incesticide album liner notes and apply it to any situation: "At this point I have a request for our fans. If any of you in any way hate homosexuals, people of different color, or women, please do this one favor for us - leave us the f*ck alone! Don't come to our shows and don't buy our records."

The best thing is to ignore those who cling on to some kind of weird old beliefs that people should be treated differently. Wouldn't want to be associated with douchebags anyway.

Now that the NFL has the first gay player, maybe the next thing to shoot for is the first gay head coach, GM or owner.

Left wing (liberal) Fascism is an oxymoron. Looking at the 14 defining characteristics of Fascism, which ones sound like liberal viewpoints?

    1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

    2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

    3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

    4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread
domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

    5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

    6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

    7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

    8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

    9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

    10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

    11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

    12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

    13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

    14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

I've stayed out of this thread since I envisioned romantic couples high fiving in the rain instead of kissing, lol.

Sorry that this bothered you so much Vinny. However... how is Ross alienating anyone? Our team immediately condemned the comments... and have since fined and suspended the player, and are sending him to sensitivity training.

What other aporopriate action do you feel needs to be done?

But the public will punish the team by requiring them to discipline the player.

Why are so freaking oblivious to this very basic and common of capitalist practices? You are not advocating freedom of speech you are advocating freedom from responsibility. And by doing that, you are taking away the freedom of other people to voice their opinions and the freedom of businesses to protect their business from stupid employees.

    Hi,
Look...Jones should have kept his opinion to himself and that is the bottome line. He is a professional football player who frankly...is in no position to be voicing his opinion. Yes, you are entitled to your own opinions, yes you have the right to like or dislike whatever is you want in this world. However if it were me in Jones' position (a guy that will be fighting for a roster spot this year) I would have kept any potential controversy away from me and just played ball. At the end of the day everyone is entitled to an opinion and every can and will judge you for that opinion. He should have kept his mouth shut...BECAUSE it involved his trade, his business, his livelihood, and his sustenance.
As for Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend on the mouth in front of the entire world....Whatever floats your boat bro. Personally Male on Male affection is an awkward thing for me to see. That does not mean that I dislike Gay people.
I am straight and happily married and I don't even think i'd be kissing my wife on national TV, but I am also an introverted human being. At the end of the day I'm with the group that just wants to know if Michael Sam can get it done in the NFL as a Defensive End. He certainly played well in college and was named the top defensive player in the toughest conference. He'll have a shot in St. Louis and I personally am rooting for the guy.

He works in the entertainment industry. Tweeting is broadcasting. This isn't rocket surgery here. He can tweet it, but his employer can then take the actions they feel are appropriate in response. People are fired for crap they put out on social media all the time. Freedom of speech is not freedom from the consequences of that speech.
