That's just one album, though....Their first 4 are masterpieces and they deserve all the praise they get just on those alone IMO

When a song like Seven Nation Army becomes semi-big... I think that they've had more success than they deserve. I don't think they're that musically talented and I guarantee you that others agree with me. At the very least, get a drummer that doesn't get ALL of their beats from a Beginner Drumming Workbook.

Personally I think Grunge was just a fad... I think it was semi-ground breaking at the time, but to say that Nirvana is overrated when most people cannot name too many bands during the grunge rock era... seems realistic.

I would love to see what people think of when they hear grunge rock, I bet they would come up with about one band, but maybe a few others. Nirvana would top the list in a landslide with bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains following.

    Underrated:

TOOL - Sure, a lot of people have heard of them and have listened to them but have not "gotten it". Anyone who I have made listen to them for an extended period of time has become a big fan. They are also the best live band in the World...in my opinion. They are also the only band that really matters to me. Yes, I LOVE a lot of bands but TOOL is the only band that I've traveled 14 hours in a car to see live. When they hang it up it will be a horrible day for me.

Kamelot - This board (Pagan in particular) got me into them and I've been hooked for months. Roy Khan is the best pure singer in the genre and maybe in all of music, dude is stellar. Pagan has said it and I agree, "they are what Queensryche SHOULD have been".

Faith No More - Yes, they are no longer in existence but a lot of people think "The Real Thing" when they hear the name, not realizing that their last three records (Angel Dust, King for a Day...Fool for a Lifetime, Album of the Year) were easily their best material.

In Flames - Another band that this board got me into. They are straight ahead metal the way it should be in my opinion. Very good live band as well.

Sparta - Straight ahead rock band. Absolutely brilliant live and no one knows who they are. They should be HUGE. their last record "Threes" is on my ten best of all time list. It is stellar from beginning to end.

    Overrated:

The list is too long for me...LOL! There are a lot of bands that I don't care about enough (Nickleback etc.) to even acknowledge, they are just pure **** so no point in naming them all but there are a few bands that bother me in particular...

Led Zeppelin - Yes, Zep heads, freak out on me now. I just don't get it, never have.

AC/DC - Boring. Yes, they are an institution but they do nothing for me. If I have to hear "Shook me all night long" or "Back in Black" one more time I'll slit my wrists.

Guns and Roses - When everyone was freaking out about them in their hey day I was cranking Slayer. They have done anything in 15 years, I wish they would go away forever.

Metallica - How can a band that recorded masterpieces like "Puppets" and "...And Justice" be reduced to what they are now? Oh yah, get to big, sell out, stop being hungry, stop caring and listen to Bob Rock. The "Black" album had some good tracks on it (My Friend of Misery, Sad but True, Wolf and Man) but anything they have done after that is pure ****.

AC/DC helped revolutionize the simple rock beat and made it sound a lot better than it really is, but I can understand why you would say they're overrated. The past few years it seems like I've seen too many t-shirts and some of the people wearing them have no real idea who the band is..

I was about to be glad that someone agreed w/ me about Led Zeppelin, then I saw the 3 other bands you mentioned :pity: I can maybe see AC/DC but Appetite for Destruction is too good of an album for me to list GNR and Metallica is just great. I dont care that Load and Reload arent great (though I think they're far from bad) and that St. Anger is horrible, their early stuff is still great.

The funny thing is, the only band you named that was "grunge" is Nirvana. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden were rock bands and Alice in Chains has been described as a lot of things (metal, alternative rock). The only reason those bands are described as "grunge" is because they happened to be in the same city when they were all discovered.

Grunge was exposed on the national scene by Nirvana but a lot of bands were playing that style before them. Green River, The Pixies, Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone and Sonic Youth shaped the genre.

Personally I like their Black Album the best, they have one or two pretty good songs off of the others. Seek and Destroy was one of my favorites from Kill 'Em All... For Whom The Bell Tolls and and Fade to Black were great on Ride the Lightning. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) and Master of Puppets were good on the Master of Puppets album. ...And Justice for All and One were my favorites from from ...And Justice and All. The Black Album I thought was very good throughout, however my favorite is The Unforgiven.

I would assume you're talking about Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice For All, and their self titled album (Black Album) as far as their 4 masterpieces.

I'm not saying they're not a good band.. I'm just saying that they're pretty hyped up.. Much more than they probably deserve.

I was very weary of posting about Pearl Jam and Soundgarden... Alice in Chains as well... because I knew someone would bring that up. But they have been brought up time and time to be in the grunge rock era so I put them in the picture.

Honestly though, what has Metallica done since the Black album that is worth a damn? They have not recorded a decent record since 1991...THAT WAS 17 YEARS AGO! There are people graduating high school that were not born when they last did something that is worth while.

Don't get me wrong, Puppets, Justice, Lightning and Kill 'em All are classics. I'll listen to them for the rest of my life but you have to do something half assed every 20 years to not be called overrated.

Cant argue with that...I didn't even really like the Black Album all that much to be honest. But what I'm saying is how can anybody listen to those first 4 albums and say they are overrated as a whole? As far as the last 20 years sure I'll say that they are to an extent. But as a whole they are not overrated

Naw overrated is creating albums that die out and won't be listened to. Having even been able to produce 4 albums that are forever classics puts them way above overrated IMO.
