With 7.C04 Seattle selects Ben Gardner, DE, Stanford

Watching his tape, I rated the 6'4 262 pound Gardner as one of my top 5 interior pressure players, and the numbers from his pro day only further solidified my belief as he displayed tremendous lower body explosion [39.5 vertical and a 10'02 broad] paired with a ridiculous 6.98 3-cone agility, both of which he uses to powerfully knife through gaps, bend around interior linemen, and stunt & seek the QB at a high level. Through 34 starts Gardner totaled 17.5 sacks and 34 TFLs, and despite playing only 8 games last season due to a pectoral injury, he was still named 1st Team All-PAC-12.

Watching his Pro Day drills below [0:58 mark] you can see why he's such a handful to deal with when used as an interior pressure guy.

This is a player I hope Miami drafts to boost our interior nickel presence. Watch him terrorize Arizona State's backfield all game long here.

With pick 224 in the 7th Round the Giants select:

[IMG][IMG]

Shaquelle Evans, WR, UCLA, 6-1, 213lbs

The Giants were pleased to see a targeted name that had fallen from a possible 3rd-5th round selection in Shaq Evans, we were looking for a speedy big body receiver to develop behind Cruz and Randle and we believe we found him!
Evans was a 4-star receiver recruit out of high school, was the Bruins' leading receiver for the second straight season earning All-Pac 12 Honorable Mention honors the past two years. Shaq had a breakout 2012 season catching 60 receptions for 877 yards and three touchdowns. The junior had a huge game against Oregon State (6-148) and an impressive outing against USC (8-114), in 2013 when he started 12-of-13 games at the "Z" and totaled 47-709-9.

Evans has a mix of size (6-1) and quickness (ran forties of 4.40 & 4.48 at UCLA's pro day) and tied for the fastest 10-yard split (1.47 seconds) of any combine participant, Muscular build with good reach and arm length. Long strides and accelerates quickly to be a deceiving vertical threat, getting a defensive back turned and stretching the field. Stays low in his breaks and works hard to hide his route path with patience and lean. Nice job getting proper depth before quickly putting on the brakes. Controlled off the line of scrimmage and understands how to beat press coverage with quickness and strength. Not afraid to get physical in his routes. Extends well to pluck and will corral off-target throws. Some wiggle to elude in the open field. Good effort as a downfield blocker.

Evans is the type of player you want walking off the bus first with his bulk and muscular frame, he is patient and disciplined with his routes and eats up grass quickly. Evans will look to compete with Jerrell Jernigan and Austin Collie for the #3 WR position behind Victor Cruz and Rueben Randle. Giants look to use him in the ā€œZā€ role with Randle in ā€œXā€ and Cruz in Slot on 3 receiver sets.

Reasons he was a steal at 224:
NFL.com: 12th rank WR, 97th OVR, 3-4 Round, grade 5.4
CBS: 19th WR, 3-4 Rd, 118 OVR
Walter Football: 24th rank WR, 4-6 Round

Pick 2

Tyler Starr

Combine Numbers

Height: 6'4"

Weight: 250 lbs

Arm Length: 32 1/2"

Hands: 9 1/2"

40: 4.95 seconds

Bench: 24 reps

Vertical: 32.0 inches

Broad: 116.0 inches

3 Cone: 6.64 seconds (top for LBs in 2014, second all-time)

Shuttle: 4.15 seconds

Positives

Starr is a relentless pass rusher and has a bit of nastiness to his game. He was used in coverage and did a pretty good job on tight ends. He is long and bends very well with solid hips (as seen by his fantastic 3 Cone). He uses his good burst well and is a solid athlete. He capable of using his body control and length to get to the quarterback. He is good at wrapping up.

Negatives

He lacks technique for the most part when it comes to pass rushing and seems to be out of places several times per game. He tends to play a bit too loose and can get taken out by blocks. He could stand improve his strength as it does not seem like he manages to get off blocks frequent enough against the run. He is a bit of a project from a small school and limited technique.
