Heat announce they're getting $147 million over 10 years from Miami-Dade to upgrade building right before tip-off..

This is very disappointing to me and a slap in the face. Heat have a brand new Arena, and now they get money for upgrades. Phins seriously need an upgraded stadium if not a new one and not just to attract SB and they got a cold shoulder from the county. This is really terrible decision making and politics imo. Very disappointing.

The Heat are champions and have a 1st class organization. Ross has failed miserably so far and just gave $ 200 million to his alma-mater. For those that thought that wasn't a big deal, it absolutely was. Local politicians did not take kindly to his asking for a handout and then 6 weeks later "giving away" of more money than he was asking from the public. Politicians want to keep their jobs - its plain and simple and didn't take a lot of brains to figure this all out.

County already owns AAA. This money is part of a new ten year lease extension.

AAA bad deal at the time but it's been made so might as well keep the arena in good order with your tenant locked in long term.

SUn Life would be a new bad deal when you have first hand evidence that these things are bad deals

Got it. So it's about winning, not the crap that's been spewed about the county and the citizens and saving the rain forest for the past year and a half. Cool.

 Ross must be going nuts. I doubt he will... but if he does decide to just pack up the Dolphins and move them, I honestly can't blame him one bit.

Maybe if the dolphins were more relevant from winning than that "Ace Ventura" movie....we'd get more respect from politicians.

Right. Those 3 World titles in 8 years, tons of eyeballs on the city, and tourism drawn in from the best team and player in the league have nothing to do with it.

and that's fine, that's good business, they don't understand what their missing out on when you play in a venue like sunlife, suits are not gonna get it...they think ughhh football...stadium...that's all you need so we should be all happy, they don't get it sick.they don't get how bad sunlife is for the economy of south Florida, how debilitating it is for this team, the city, and the future of large sporting events in this Area, they also don't get what new monies could bring to their region by offsetting some costs to rebuild or enhance..

Ross has to think for these idiots.

Well...the Superbowl is played at rotated sites each year. Every year you have the SB you have the best teams in the league. And the Dolphins play in the same city as the Heat, So it's the same tourists.

Dolphins stadium is no where near the same vicinity as AAA. Dolphins stadium is just over the Dade line from broward, next to a dog track and swamps.

AAA is on Biscayne bay near port of miami, south beach and a **** ton of tourism. Putting money into that facility, with a winner like the Heat is a no brainer.

Like I've said a million times putting money into sunlife is the proverbial dressing up the pig..but I'll take it because a new stadium and how it could make them incredibly rich is so far past their comprehension it's an exercise in futility.

Miami MIGHT get to host a Super Bowl. Miami has hosted NBA Finals games three straight years.

My only real issue is that Ross offered them an amazing deal, twice.

The politicians down there are pretty stupid, sounds like some of the voters there are too....if you improve the stadium for the Dolphins you get a Superbowl....um hello? Ross shouldn't pay for it, the league is right to ask cities to help pay for a billion dollar payday that comes their way when a Superbowl comes to town.

Exactly, someone made a comment earlier about the Heat and 3 NBA finals in three of 8 years or something... Big deal. The income generated from hosting a Super Bowl in the Miami area far outweighs all 3 of those finals combined, and I'm guessing its not even close.

There's no real moral to the story here. It's politics, people like the Heat so giving them money would be politically sound. It doesn't validate or reflect on anything other than the recent popularity of the team. It's not even really a good justification, given how much of this town is bandwagon-jumping fakers. If the Heat have a couple of bad years they'll be back to where they were very quickly.

I'm not sure why tourism really enters into the location argument. I can't imagine people who are in the area for another reason and attend games are a particularly notable demographic in ticket sales. If they're coming to see a game I can't imagine traveling a bit from tourist areas is really a deal breaker. I can't imagine the Heat draw more money in that area per-game, or percentage wise than the Dolphins do either with all the opposing fans.

    of course they do.

First of all, the Heat have MORE dates to draw money for the surrounding area. Second of all, the Indoor sports culture is built for a restaurant/bar stop before/after the game. People tailgate at NFL games.

and for the "back where they were" comment....

The Heat, when they won 15 games, had better attendance than the Dolphins have had in the last 6 years, and better attendance than the Lakers that year.

For 17 Years, the Miami Heat has had better attendance overall than the Knicks, and Celtics.

This town has PROVEN with the Heat, that if you put a good organization in place...they will support it. The Ball is in Ross' court.

    Mmm, no. They don't.

It's OK to dislike the Heat getting a deal while the Dolphins don't, even though Ross gave away more money to the University of Michigan than Miami-Dade County is dropping in to the AA.

It's not OK to make up facts to support your dislike.

Ok. I live in DC. We include our suburbs for the most part. Washington Redskins are often described as playing in DC, when they dont. Ok....The Miami Dolphins play in the Greater Miami Metroplitan area....IE...the suburbs....which just so happens to reside in Miami Dade County. It doesn't poke holes in the argument....it doesn't change anything. The Dolphins belong to Miami. You can say they are the Miami Gardens Dolphins all you want. If AAA Arena was in Miami Gardens, you don't think they would still get the money? Just call it what it is.

The point is that they're different municipalities in different physical locations. Just because the Redskins are erroneously described as playing in DC does not mean you get to continue the error by describing the Dolphins as playing in Miami.

You stated the Dolphins play in the same city as the Heat. They do not. The scope of my reply to you ends there.

Handouts to sporting leagues is not a valid measure of quality of governance.
