Actually I think it all stems from people's fantasy about coaches being the world's best motivational speakers that always have a movie making monologue at the ready when the team is down. And I think we tend to view players as kids that just need that speech sometimes to awaken the greatest they have inside. Basically, we envision a Mighty Ducks movie. I don't think its like that at all in reality.

What Philbin is trying to do is to be a rock that players can rely on. Over confidence is as deadly for a team as "under confidence". He knows people like Chad Johnson can poison a locker room if things go south. He knows when a guy comes to camp fat while on a big contract but is considered a leader that can poison the locker room. He knows when a guy is out there getting drunk and molesting women during team charity functions but is also considered a locker room it could poison the locker room. He knows when a guy has all the talent in the world but is lazy and doesn't even take care of business before practice it can poison a locker room.

All of those things are doubly dangerous when the coach is new. He has very limited power with the players. We've seen with Ireland, that Philbin couldn't really say who stayed and who went. You can't bench too many players as you only have a small handful that can play a position. Not the least of all, these are all grown men, most of who make more money than you do as a coach. A guy like Belichick has the clout for players to buy in the second they walk through the door. He not only has the long track record but he quite literally has the keys to the franchise, he needs no one's permission to kick you from the team and he can do it for any reason he wants. Philbin doesn't have that power or clout.

We tend to forget (or not even know) that Philbin does things like dance a jig in the locker room only for the guys after a win or participate in team only ping pong tourneys. They know who he is and they know he's not the exact thing he portrays in PCs.

Everybody assumes that Harbaugh is that guy like the ones that match our fantasy coach. Yet, the cracks in his armor are starting to show as many people from the team are starting to say his demeanor is wearing thin. If they stumble during the season, that will unravel.

I don't think coach's should be judged a great deal by his demeanor, weather introverted or extroverted, rah rah or bland. I saw a lot of emotion from Philbin on the sidelines when we were getting screwed by the refs and I'm glad I didn't see as much emotion from his as Harbaugh had on the sidelines. I like the even kealed approach but successful leaders are also good motivators. Grading his demeanor I'd give him a C.
It's more important to judge Philbin by his ability to coach and teach. He watched a lot of film on opponents, tried to put the best players on the filed, and tried to devise the best game plans. In that respect, I'd give Philbin a D grade which was brought down by his failing grade to bring in good assistants for the offense. Philbin needs to improve his people skills, and more importantly he needs to improve his game planning ability and his ability to adjust to what he sees on the filed on game day. We lost some chess matches last year because of his weaknesses. Play calling against the Bills on the last drive of the first Buffalo Game, failure to a call a time out to set up the D on 4th and 10 against the Panthers.

Bill Belichick isn't rah rah but he's intense. You know you will face that ice cold stare if you mess up. Someone like Cam Cameron nobody feared. Joey Porter dressed him down in front of everyone and he just moved on. Didn't even respond. Tony Dungy and I believe Lovie Smith are quiet but they connect with their players. They'll run through a brick wall for those two.

What do we have with Philbin? Year 3 will tell us.

bill Belicek does everything humanly possible to find motivation for his players, he pulls out all the stops..bulletin board material, videos, stories, past great athletes stories, stories of courage, history..guest speakers.

If folks don't think players fate and teams success is based in how unified and motivated teams are then they don't think Belicek is a good coach.

he's a hard *** in practice I can vouch for that..he's got one more year to show that he can motivate a team..because yeah, that's an important part of the job, to get your players to want to be their best and play for their coach..

    Good observations.

However, I'm in a camp you may not have considered: I think "middling" would be a step up from anything the team had at RB last year, and I won't be terribly disappointed with middling.

People--not just kids--need to be awakened all the time. I agree with you that a speech isn't going to do it for most, but somnambulism could be our national pastime: people get comfortable and go on auto-pilot. Auto-pilot might be a good explanation for how a manager could go months without noticing that one of his most important employees hates coming to work and is on the verge of breakdown.

As for the Harbaugh thing: is it safe to say that we should believe rumors and innuendo coming from beat writers and anonymous players in San Francisco while ignoring rumors and innuendo coming from beat writers and anonymous players in Miami?

If Harbaugh has cracks in his armor, I'll venture to say that Philbin is naked and caked in mud, only some of the mud has been washed away by sweat, revealing the pasty-white flesh beneath.

I hope this year he has the sense to put on some pants. I think armor might be a year or two away.

P.S. We're all living in our own realities. There is no such thing as objectivity, and everything we perceive and think about is all filtered through our nervous systems and our belief systems and constructed into a fantasy that we then call "reality."

It can be helpful (but a bit scary) to question one's own reality every day; it can be annoying as hell to question others' realities every day. I just thought I'd share that because you seem to be placing "fantasy" in one corner and "what Fin D believes" in another corner, when in fact we're all in the fantasy corner all the time, even on topics where we have much more primary sensory data than we have for the Miami Dolphins.

I never liked the Daniel Thomas signing . Hickey is already making me feel so much better and it feels fantastic to not have Ireland in most of the discussions and I wished we would have fired him four years ago .

so far this season goes it has the feel to it that we may on the rise.

No. I very clearly and numerously classified what I was saying as "I think". Do you understand that implies I'm giving my opinion and not stating fact?

You're even contradicting yourself in that post. You tell me the reality is that everyone is living a fantasy. You stop there, meaning that's your reality. By pontificating as you have, you basically are implying everyone's reality is a fantasy except yours. And unlike me, you're stating it as a fact not an opinion.

They did improve but the last two games washed all that out, that's the problem. And please don't get me wrong because I like Philbin and while I don't blame him for missing the playoffs, mostly because Ireland overruled him on Jon Martin at LT and that pretty much sabtagoed Philbin's season, I do think he was terrible the last two games, I mean 7 points in 2 games and not really in either game? He's got to take a big hit for that.

He really did a fabulous job getting the team through that dark period, it was bad man and they played tough, but it also makes what happen in the last two weeks frustrating, what the hell happen to that resiliency they showed? I don't think anyone of us expected that after what we saw including the big win in Pittsburgh.

I do realize the last two games sucked. I do agree he has a lot of blame for that. But there's a difference between giving him his due blame for those 2 games and acting like he's a horrible coach that is sinking. (Not saying either of you said he was horrible, but the poster I was responding too was sure acting like Philbin is awful.)

In the end, I think they were a spent team. A lot of that had to do with the scandal, a lot of it also had to do with ireland putting together the wrong players for Philbin.

if I'm right we have a good coach, if I'm wrong we'll have a chance to woo Malzhan.

Posters are questioning his ability to motivate. Some say he needs to be rah rah, some, like me, say he doesn't need to be rah rah. But he needs to rally his troops. If there was ever time to rally the troops, it's after a very emotional win over rivals and rulers of the east Patriots, with two games left against subpar opponents and you need one win. That's where he earns his keep.

I agree, after the tough wins at Pittsburgh and playing their hearts out to give their home fans a W against NE, the team seemed spent. I saw them leave everything on the field against NE and there was nothing left.

It's curious why he got such little money after such a high profile season. Hope he pans out for us. Wouldn't surprise me to see Miller the better back at the end of the year.

My expectations from Moreno is 1400 total yards, and blocking. If we had that last year (letting Bush go was a major mistake) we would have been competing for the division till the end in my opinion. Just hope Gibson comes back 100%, and hope we pick up a red zone threat in this draft (Ebron, Evans, Jace).

Not sure about that. If Miller suddenly decides he is a bonafide NFL RB and is hungry then this can get interesting very quickly. Total upside and positives at RB imo. Miller will have a better O-Line, thats a gimme. Lets see what Miller can do with it. Im satisfied we got Moreno. Would have been equally happy with MJD or Donald Brown who was my personal favourite. We got one of them. Happy days.

I think if you look at the season as a whole there was a year long tendency to play well vs good teams and have let downs vs lesser teams, it's not something that popped up after the NE game.

I don't necessarily put that on Philbin, but he strikes me as the type of coach who "expects" guys to play hard every week w/o needing any extra push. A lot of players are like that, a lot of them aren't and IMO a good coach needs to be able to handle both types.

I have higher expectations than that bro, at least 1500 total, no reason he can't rush for over a thousand yards here, not with the amount of total carries and catches I think the offense will facilitate to him..if I had to bet,I'd say 1600 total.

I disagree. Former first round pick. But there are a lot of first round "picks" who are not first round talents. Just because he was "selected" there does not mean anything. He may well be a 6th round talent! Is Tim Tebow a first round talent? Not even close. More like UDFA!

Hate to tell you but Eric Kumerow and Billy Milliner were both selected in the first round. But they were Eight. Billion. Light. Years. from being "first round talents!"

If teams and fans get seduced by a player because he was selected in round 1, they are buying fools gold. It matters not where a player was drafted. It matters what he does on the field and that has been demonstrated to be completely mediocre.

I think Moreno will be a decent addition, a veteran improvement, a more reliable blocker, but he is not a first round talent and should not have been selected in round 1. He was good at GA but also not a "beast" there. The guy just does not break tackles as his stats evidence.

I think Polian was spot on in his analysis:

He won't be getting that many touches. I bet the team starts Miller. They want to see if he can become the feature guy going forward. Drafting a Tre Mason means you can't continue to give Miller this look as your lead back of the future. Moreno is just a fallback plan should Miller not take this chance to seize the job (like last year). Moreno is here as 1-year insurance while the staff gives Miller one last season to prove himself.

Moreno has rushed for 1000 yds once in entire career. He has a career average of 4.1 YPA. The NFL average last year was 4.2 YPA. You certainly could do worse than Knowson Moreno, but I would hope they have plans to bring in a rookie that can run the ball better.
