That 39.9% that Thomas led all RBs in is pct of passing downs in which he stayed in to pass block. Nothing to do with how effective he was.

True, they would have just confused him with the other Frank Thomas who play for the Chisox since he was much more recent. Actually, what confused me was anyone saying Daniel Thomas was most effective at anything positive among our RBs.

Ugh, not a big fan, not a big detractor, the sort of "running backs are relegated" approach comes to mind.

A good all around running back who does not offer much in terms of big play potential, but also does not have the rookie learning curve.

Hopefully he is Curtis Martin for us, more than likely Bernie Parmalee

    Back in Miami
He's probably crying more than that now after realizing he's leaving a loaded Denver Broncos team likely headed back to a Super Bowl.

This at least takes RB off the list as a need in the draft and focus closer towards the best player available.

Signing Moreno is all about Lamar Miller. The staff needed an insurance option in the backfield while they give Miller this year to prove that he's the feature guy. If he fails, Moreno can pick it up for next year and then they go out and get a stud rookie in the 2015 draft. That's why they brought Moreno in. Drafting a Tre Mason or Jeremy Hill would've put Miller on the backburner, and the staff isn't ready to do that. Miller has this year, his third, to prove that he's THE guy. We shall see.

Moreno should be the starter and play 2/3s of the downs IMO. He gives the offense a back who can handle all the duties that a complete back needs to handle and be above avg in all of them.

Now there is already a trend against what Hickey wants and what Philbin wants with regard to player "make up".

Philbin wants players to play with little emotion...not to get high and not too low...stay the course - balanced. He likes players who are quiet and not vocal.
On the other hand Hickey acquires Delmas, Finnegan and Moreno, guys who are either vocal leaders or are passionate emotional players.
Hickey wants passionate guys like Sapp, Derrick Brooks and John Lynch of his Tampa Bay Super Bowl years.
Personally, I think this team needs that. They lacked any sort of passion or intensity last year. Philbin in my opinion needs to change and may be he has realized that. However he still mentioned that emotionless trait in a player during the owners meeting so I don't know.

This may be nothing and I might be making something out of nothing but I wonder if Philbin still believes in his "player make up" philosophy and whether he'll have trouble with guys like Delmas, Finnegan and Moreno.

I'm not sure its been established that Philbin doesn't want passionate football players on the team. I'm not sure how and where his obvious disdain for **** ups has turned into wanting emotionless players.

Actually you have to look a little deeper with Pass Blocking Efficiency. What the PFF stats show is that DT was left in pass blocking too often.

    PBE:

Miller 7th out of 22 qualifying
Moreno 10th out of 22 qualifying
Thomas 19th out of 22 qualifying

But hopefully with a stronger line it will mean we aren't putting these guys into as many situations where they can be teed off on in obvious passing downs or blowing as many assignments from the OL (Variables PFF can't account for)

Though I want us to draft someone, I'll be rather surprised if we take a RB in the top 4 rounds now. Signing Moreno to this one-year deal is basically saying "Let's give Miller this season to prove he's capable of being a feature guy. And if he's not, we have Moreno to fall back on".

I was paraphrasing, not exactly emotionless but he doesn't want players too high or low in emotion. Let's not turn this into a semantics discussion.

Here's one example from Barry Jackson in the Herald and I'm not going to search through videos of Philbin's interviews to find another example...It's too time consuming.

    ### Some Dolphins players privately believe coach
Joe Philbin, reserved by nature, needs to improve as a motivator and in how he prepares teams emotionally for games. The flat demeanor and unemotional “stay the course, don’t get too high or low” message doesn’t resonate with some Dolphins and was reflected in their play at times. And reading to his players off index cards isn’t exactly inspiring.

That's not Philbin saying that about himself. That's someone speculating. There can still be some truth to it, but different players different strokes.

I call BS, put it this way, a reserved coach is not a detriment unless the players themselves are not professionals and need "rah rah" stuff.

Tony Dungy, for example was not exactly Jules Wingfield when it came to it.

The semantics are important this time. He doesn't want a guy that *****es and moans, that's not the same thing as wanting someone who is passionless.

The whole Chad Johnson thing is a perfect example. He doesn't want a guy that is constantly acting the fool and yapping. He also doesn't like guys that form a leadership council just to ***** about getting rid of a player that constantly acted the fool and yapped non stop right up to the point he got arrested.

Moreno's stats are simply average to below average. I think he's a good addition relative to what is there (esp. Thomas) but I am not a big fan for these reasons:

1/4 of his 1000 yards last year came in one game when the Pats gave the Broncos the run. His average would be 3.99 carry other than that one game. His average yards after the first hit was 2.1 (39th in the league putting him in the bottom 10 of RBs). He should have put up a much higher average on a team with Manning that is setting passing records.

I hope he does great for us but anyone who thinks he is anything other than middling - is more likely to be disappointed.

The market for running backs is pretty soft. We would probably have to PAY another team to take Donald Thomas off of us.

The positive of Moreno in the passing game (blocking and catching) as a 3rd down back is the best thing about this. He'll be an improvement over the other RBs in that way and his experience will help. But, not impressive as a RB.

I don't think anyone is dumping on Thomas because he is a 2nd rounder. We are dumping on him is this is going into his fourth season and he has been consistently mediocre. Lamar Miller is only a 4th round pick people are more upbeat about him. He is also inconsistent but he at least has the potential to break some long runs.

I think part of it is that Philbin himself comes off like having the energy and charisma of dry, toast. Also there is the fact that the team jettisoned several vocal leaders last offseason. All guys Ireland has acquired so Philbin probably had an input there. So far I'm not a Philbin fan. He's bland, doesn't seem to have much charisma or leadership ability. He seems like a nice guy but I am underwhelmed so far. My hope is that I am underestimating him and that he will take us to the playoffs this year.

I think the conversation should switch from him not wanting passionless players, that's ludicrous, to wanting players who conduct themselves a certain way, and can he find 53 guys who play with the same type of class he wants them to play with, if you remember, the word swagger came up in a presser last year, and he was asked if his team was starting to get some of it, the next day he came back with the literal definition of the word and preceded to tell the media his team does not play with that..

Now I respect his approach, I just want a unified team that kicks people *** and doesn't say sh@& in the process, I'm certainly not a fan of the seahawk way..I like this part of our coach, I hope we can find the right guys.

WTF is that supposed to mean? Are you insinuating I do not watch the Dolphins? Kiss my ***. I saw 20 games last year between preseason and regular season. I don't let anyone do my thinking for me when it comes to watching the Dolphins. So take your damned comment and shove it.

So that is why people dump on him. His being a mediocre running back has nothing to do with it, That's a solid little piece of info right there.

Have to agree. I don't think belicheck runs around head butting his lineman and leading chants in the locker room either

The only thing about your approach that matters is if it works. Our team last year should have been a 10 win team, now theresno excuse at all next season.
