I think more than ever, this year is pivotal to establish what it means to be a Miami Dolphin. Owner Stephen Ross has clearly shown that he is interested in fronting money for stadium renovations that he could never expect a financial return for the good of the Miami Dolphin franchise. With players returning like Randy Starks and Brent Grimes, there must be a reason why these players say that they'd prefer to stay in Miami. With all the considered drama that happened last year, obviously there is something that exists in Miami that compelled these players to stay. I don't care about our record this year as much as I care that our franchise returns to a respectable, professional franchise that wants to compete. This team has a historic and great past but I think this year is pivotal in re-establishing what it means to be a Miami Dolphin. We were once a dominating force in the AFC and we all know it is about time to get back to that. I think the message this year needs to be that we are THE Miami Dolphins and we WILL be a force to be reckoned with. This might just be kind of a homerish rant, and I will admit that I have been drinking, but it is about time that these players check themselves at the door and start competing for more than just themselves. I want these players to realize the city the play for and the history that they are trying to preserve. We are the Miami freaking Dolphins for God sake!

Unfortunately I think nothing matters, new stadium, J-low giving hugs and kisses in the parking lot, or even free beer on Sundays that stadium isn't going to be packed until they get a winning product on the field. Were so tired of the we promise were going to get better. Until we can take our own division no one will give a rats ***.. Sorry I just feel like that now. I wouldn't buy a ticket and waste my time driving there, paying parking, paying for outrageous food prices, and sit in that traffic for this team... I know this comes across as a piss poor Dolphin fan, but thats where they have placed me mentally over the last 15 years..

As for this season I have said it over and over in the forums were going 8-8 possibly 7-8 or 9-7 and nowhere our schedule is tough this year and were rebuilding an entire offensive line and still looking for playmakers.

I'm not sure what it's supposed to mean to be a Miami Dolphin, or any player of any team.

competent coaching and competent qb play. this is how you become respectable. it's not rocket science. we havent had either in over 10 years (except one pennington year). i gotta be honest, joe philbin is not the guy to get us where we want to be. i have zero faith in him. ryan tannehill...i'll give him this season under lazor to see if he's got what it takes. i gave him a pass under mike sherman because i thought he was one of the most clueless playcallers i had ever seen. drove me nuts every game. tannehill has gotta make one hell of a jump this upcoming season.

I second your emotion, Dorf....any difference in the fan base will be about wins and losses, not J-Lo (or Fergie), or the tent on the stadium or Steven Ross or anything else...This town was spoiled by Don Shula and Joe Robbie (thank you very, very, very much), now there is no other way to change the fan base, other than wins...

After years of mediocrity, hiring big name *******s, Saban, Parcells and dealing with their leftovers Sporano, Ireland and the culture they brought in, Ross wanted a management team.
It appears that the coach, GM and Finance are working together and making solid decisions, you have to start somewhere even thou we have been starting over and over.
The Pats were the floor mat of the AFC East for years until they got the right coach and got lucky with Brady, it took some luck right.
The Dolphins like that old blues song "Born under a Bad Sign" goes "If it wasn't for bad luck, they have no luck at all" have tried to get the right people in and it wasn't good enough.
I think we have to allow the changes to unfold, give RT a chance to develop and be happy that Ross is willing to spend to build a solid org.
I have more faith now than in the last five years and expect the team to make the playoffs these year and if not Ross may have to start again until he gets the right people are in the building.
I've been watching NFL network on the Revis signing, always showing the interception on a deep throw to Wallace, the ball came in short,Revis stepped in front of Wallace and caught ball, Wallace made no attempt to disrupt Revis, never even tried.
Wallace is not a competitor, he just waits for the ball to get in his handsso Ireland looks for speed pays $60 million but forgets heart, the dolphins haven't shown the the kind of attitude a competitive displays in years.

To me, the answer is simple....a fan supports their team year-round regardless of scores, records, or division titles. A fan looks to see the good in their team, no matter what, and they relate with the team's struggles because they're going through it too. A fan also deals with losses like the professionals that he roots for- it stings like mad for a little while but we learn to focus on next week. Most of all though, a fan defends his team no matter what and proudly represents the organization.

So honestly, I could care less about locker room scandals, who the Pats landed in free agency or what Ross's intentions might be. I'm a Miami Dolphin fan, day in and day out, and I am always optimistic about next Sunday. In this case, it sucks that "next Sunday" is six months away...but I guess that's part of being a fan too.

OP, good post. We need to win of course but great organizations not only win but earn great reputations. IMO we have to do both.

    Unfortunately you are right.

The Dolphins haven't done anything to improve.

The re-signing of aging players does not impress me. It depresses me.

There was so much opportunity this off season and nothing good has happened so far. Nothing whatsoever.

Even the smallest thing like the Jonathan Martin trade. We should have instigated a bidding war amongst the cap strapped teams like the Saints,Giants,Steelers,Cowboys. Instead, they did the politically correct thing and sold him cheap to his old college coach; like we owed him anything?? Lame a$$ wussy!

Albert,Starks, and Finnegan are all OLD! and they aren't going to help us beat the Patriots, which should be the first order of business in the AFC East. And none of them are the kind of leaders that this team so desperately needs.

Dolphins need a new owner and everybody should be ****canned!

To have what your longing for you must have a culture, to create a culture you must have a unique venue..

Lets hope we start working on renovations as ASAP.

Players by themselves simply cannot sustain what is needed for what your asking for, they need the fans to be passionate, supportive, and have the ability to create energy inside the building..give them that and they will get a sense of pride again.

Think about it, what exactly are they playing for?, some pics of Larry Czonka on the walls, the culture is gone, it needs to be rebuilt..

this is all very true and very well said, unfortunately this culture in this town likes to hear themselves criticize without the sense of what their words can actually do to affect a culture, more than others.

I grew up in Davie, but I've lived in the Carolinas for the past 18 years. While I still visit friends & family in South Florida often, it is definitely not the place I spent the first 22 years of my life. I was in Sawgrass Mills a few months ago and I literally didn't hear a word of English spoken for two hours, and it made me really sad to think that the place I'll always call home is just a fantasy in my mind.

While I still love the Miami Dolphins, the beaches and so much more about the area, I think I can honestly say that I'm no longer a fan of Broward county. People on these boards that haven't been to a Fins home game in 10+ years would be absolutely shocked what the area has become. It's not necessarily a bad thing...but it's certainly not what it used to be.

So if you're wondering why the fan support is at an all-time low, it's because Miami natives aren't there anymore. The housing bubble forced most of them north and the new residents have no history with the Dolphins. In some ways, selling the team and moving it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing in my opinion....it would crush me, but I'd also understand. There just aren't the hardcore, lifetime fans down there like there used to be.

I was a season ticket holder for well over 30 years before my wife and I moved out of South Florida this past January. I have also traveled to over 30 away games during my time as a Miami Dolphin fan.
I was at the first regular season game the Dolphins ever played and show Joe Auer return the opening kick for a TD. I have lived with the highs and the lows of being a Dolphin fan. So I really don't need someone else defining for me what a Miami Dolphin fan is or is not.

While I continue to be a fan. I did view the locker room scandal as a negative for this organization. I also have been upset with the teams play the last decade and with many of the management decisions Ross has made since becoming majority owner of the Dolphins. While I appreciate that he is stepping up and finally agreeing finance the stadium renovations. I still question if he has the right men running the football side of the operations. I don't see Philbin as a quality HC and I also wonder why no other NFL team ever had any interest in hiring Hickey as their GM. Perhaps Philbin and Hickey will turn out to better than I think they are, but they need to prove they deserve their positions.

Perhaps after 47 years as a Miami Dolphin fan, I have seen the difference between a quality organization and one which always appears to be several steps behind the better organizations in the NFL. Right now the Dolphin organization is in that tier of organizations which are still trying to get to where the top organizations are today. Perhaps they can show this coming season that they can take a big step forward, but until they have an actual season where they have more wins than losses, it is just the same talk we have heard year after year in regards to the future being better.

They need to quit talking about it and start showing it on the field. I may be a fan, but I am not foolish enough to just accept everything this team does without questioning if it will eventually make the team better. While I always hope for the best, the Dolphins under the ownership of Ross have shown that they have a lot to prove to their fans. Perhaps next year will be a turning point for this organization in a positive way, but only time will tell.

Don't get your hopes up on that dude.
They promoted the upgrades not only for football but for soccer so they are not moving stands. The wide field was built the way it was specifically because of that and it's staying.
Your dream only happens when a new stadium gets built. Get comfortable.

As for the culture of the Dolphins.... they have established a history of losing now.
Only winning will reverse it. It's really that simple. Everyone can talk about supposed scandals or anything else but you build a talented team and everything changes.

I'm fully aware Reef that it's putting lipstick on a pig, and a complete waste of money and probably one of the stupidest business decisions I've ever witnessed, but, my hopes are because I fully understand how bad the current situation is for this team and culture, I've also come to understand that what I see, most do not, so any improvement is just that, I'll freakin take anything at this point.

Frustrating to watch the golden Patriots still go after talent with questionable character (Browner, potentially Britt) after the Hernandez murder/s.
But three of our players were meanies in the work place and it looks like we will bypass talent in favor of character to restore franchise credibility.

This shows the reputation of this franchise has got a long way to go before it's restored.
The golden boy Patriots problems get swept under the rug and ignored because they win, they sell out games, they have stable ownership, and a Hall of fame pretty boy quarterback.

Our problems get blown out of proportion because we have none of those things.
