Exactly. I mean I have no idea if this was a good idea but clearly it wasn't a panic move. My guess is that he has known for weeks that Soliai was gone. Bad move? Possibly. Panic move? I don't think so.

I chose disapprove. I would have rather paid Randy Starks. He was one of the best at his position the past 2 years. I just don't think you let those guys go. We basically developed Starks.

Only saving grace is Kacy Rodgers.

Are we certain he's not meant to be Hickey's poor man version of "Gerald McCoy", with Odrick sliding over to 1-tech? What if we grab or draft another DT and move Odrick to 5-tech end so we can finally move Jordan to OLB?

Losing both Starks and Soliai was a mistake.
Starks I get but Soliai should have been kept.
There is a sinkhole in the DLine right now and Mitchell is not the guy that's going to fill it.
Hope we have more in mind.

it was well noted that Soliai thought he was mistreated here and with the Starks flipping the finger incident last year at the bench, I wouldn't have expected anything less. It is still a positive signing, but I agree that we still need to find a DT that can stuff the run. My point is though, expecting that Starks or Soliai would have returned seems kind of misguided given their noted problems with our team.

Starks was more than Philbin could handle.
That said, you can't just cast away any and all players that feel they've been mishandled like Soliai.
Sometimes you have to be that coach that bridges issues with players to make the team the best it can be.
I get the feeling that Philbin does not have the ability to reach challenging players and get them to buy in. Maybe he does not even want to deal with that part of his role and feels just casting guys off is the answer. We'll see how that works for him.

It's not just locker room issues. They got rolled at the POA in run game last year. Plus they are getting up there in age. You balance it all out, and decide to move on.

Fair assumption to be honest; the jury is definitely still out on Philbin and what his capabilities are. I just think that it was expected that Soliai and Starks were gonners given the experiences we saw with them the past few seasons.

Soliai and Starks are gone because they didn't want 2 30+ year old DT's and they are clearly trying to move to a more Cincinatti style defense now. Earl Mitchell is a clear sign of such. DJ brought up a good point to me earlier about how Miami's been linked in the draft to Will Sutton who draft sites compare to a Geno Atkins type. That might be a player to really watch for in round 2-3.

Congrats to Earl Mitchell. Good guy, hard worker who's cashed in with Miami. He'll be a solid player who can be counted on.

If you wanted to resign Starks, you could be in luck.

Time Of Possession. We really need an upgrade on Wheeler or his light needs to come or Spitler and Ridley will just keep our O off the field. In our last two games our time of possession was 23 minutes against Buffalo and 27 minutes against the Jets. With the decline in Brady's receiving corp, I see them leaning on the run game more as well. Our MLB has to lead the team in tackles. When safety's lead in tackles, it's a problem.

I was ready to move on from Starks, I didn't think there was anyway he would of accepted 6 mill a year on a two year contract, and that's what I thought he was worth..glad he's back, I hope he doesn't play down to his contract and what he thinks he's worth.

I change my vote. With Starks back in the mold, I'm ok with it. I don't like it if they're asking him to play the Soliai role and handle 2 blockers.

If they're asking him to penetrate and get in the backfield, then I believe this could potentially be a solid move.

I don't understand why some are suggesting he was brought here to replace Solai, I don't think they think that and I surely don't think earl Mitchell thinks that.

Because it's completely natural to think that. The Dolphins have said they want him penetrating and attacking the LOS, which is great.

But again, Kevin Coyle has a style. So thinking he brings Mitchell in for that role is a natural thought. I hope he just lets all 3 of them get after it and create more TFL.

Or could we go to more even fronts? Also, just because Earl played 1 tech NT at Houston, does not mean it would be the same exact role as playing it here. The Texans could have wanted him to play more of a read and react style and tie up blockers and help free up Watt to penetrate in disrupt. If he plays 1 tech NT here, Coyle could tell him to just pin his ears back, shoot the gap and get into the backfield.

That was apparently an urban legend. Starks is back. Philbin is still here.

If they wanted a big old slug to clog the middle to replace Soliai, they'd have signed Cam Thomas or Mount Cody. Heck, maybe they still will.
