If we go into the season expecting Jamar Taylor or Will Davis to start we're in trouble. One of those guys needs to earn a starting spot. I'd be more interested in using the money we saved on Patterson to resign Nolan Carroll, one of our own.
We could probably get Brandon Browner for what we were paying him . If we have any confidence in Jamar Taylor and/or Will Davis, I say let Carroll go too. If not, Browner and Carroll/Patterson (reduced salary) please. Sent from my GT-P3110 using Tapatalk
My guess is we've been trying to get him to take a pay cut, but he's said no or won't go low enough. Releasing him lets him test the market, but hopefully gives us a chance of signing him again if he doesn't get the interest he thinks is out there.
Can't see Miami picking up a player of Browner's 'character' at this point... Patterson will be a value steal for someone if he can stay healthy...
@MikeGarafolo: Dolphins left the door open for Dimitri Patterson's return at a reduced rate, per source.
Yeah, but close to half of that will likely go to the offensive line. They're still in very good shape though with enough room to grab one premiere contract, 3 linemen and still sign their draft picks. Or 2-3 solid veterans, a few linemen and their draft picks. Either way, I'm very happy.
I'd rather use the money to resign Nolan Carroll. At least Nolan is willing to gut it out when he's less than 100%. I recall when Patterson was with the Browns, he was not willing to play with an ankle sprain because he didn't want any bad tape to get out on him.
We're on the same page there. Patterson is very talented, but made of paper mache and not someone you can depend on.
I think we saw this one coming and it seems the Fins want to replace Patterson due to injuries. I'm not sure Carroll comes back either. Carroll was an Ireland pick and he doesn't necessarily fit Coyle's defense. I think Hickey will go after a couple of corners in FA to compete with Jamar Taylor and Will Davis for the spot opposite Grimes as well as nickel and dime spots. Look for them to sign quick, agile, athletic ball hawks in free agency.
only need 6 for the draft. so that leaves us plenty to play around with. even more if matt moore is cut.
I don't understand the love for Carroll. When does he ever make a play? All I see him do is tackle the guy after he catches the 1st down, play's too conservative. I want to see what these two young guys are all about. Nolan is nothing more than an average #3.
While I'm not at all willing to say he's doing a "good job" (don't have enough info) I'm pleasantly surprised with our moves so far. Some were obvious though.
Nolan played outstanding this season. In the past he has been up and down but I have no negatives about his season. He was a great #2.
I agree with the fact he had his best season last year but would you really feel confident with him at the 2 spot going into the season.
Over two rookies who barely played or another draft pick yes. I'm not saying I wouldn't try and improve or that he's turned the proverbial corner, but some guys take a bit longer to develop. IMO If that is the case we look foolish letting him walk. If he wants insane money.....alright bye. If he wants something reasonable I'd love to have him back.
Carroll took great leaps last season. Any reason why he can't have MORE upside? I wouldn't be surprised if he's on the team next season and battling for that #2 CB position.
I will totally upfront and admit I am not a big Nolan Carroll fan. With that said he did play a lot better last year and had his best season. With that also said...the words outstanding and great are more than a little much to describe his play. The word great gets thrown around too easily...even when describing his job as a #2 corner. He was a solid player for us last year but those words should be saved for people who are All-Pro and elite
Carroll has always been pretty good at running with his man, he just seemed to lack the ball skills to make the play on the ball. But he did seem to turn the corner on that last year, including some truly terrific plays on the ball. Here is how he ranked among NFL CBs on some key metrics: Passer rating allowed -- 9th Completion % allowed -- 4th Run stop % -- 16th Comb. tackling efficiency -- 9th Physically and athletically, he is pretty close to a clone of Darelle Revis. Same exact height and weight coming out. Revis ran a 4.38 and Carroll ran a 4.42 (coming off a broken leg as a senior). Revis had a 38" vertical and Carroll's was 37.5". Revis's broad jump was 10'5" and Carroll's was 10'3". Revis's shuttle and 3-cone times were a little better (4.08 and 6.56 compared to 4.21 and 6.81 Carroll), but not by that much. And Carroll is a Florida guy from a solid military family who seems to have a strong work ethic and comes across as a smart, well-spoken guy. If the money just doesn't make sense then fine, let him go, but I'd liek to see him come back.
Cutting Patterson is awesome. I'm relieved that they finally did it. I was pushing for him to be cut LAST offseason. Not anywhere close to worth his pricetag, playing 4-6 games a season. I was hoping that the Fins would sign Shields, but at what Green Bay gave him, we couldn't afford that anyways. I thought he'd get closed to 5. I have to suspect though, after releasing Patterson and signing Delmas for FS (which I'm also very much in favor of) that something else is brewing at CB.
There is no chance at all that they bring Vontae Davis back right? Same coaching staff that was eager to get rid of him. Just gave me pause with that report coming out that he is signing tomorrow but not with the Colts. Just gave me a funny feeling
No, probably not Cro. He's the poster boy for a guy who's there in spite of his character, and not because of it. I doubt Vonte comes back either, since Philbin was the one who pushed to get rid of him and not Ireland.
I've been thinking this for about a month now and honestly, I think it would be an incredible move on our part. With the league's #2 and #3 corner on opposite sides of the field, it would completely change an already solid defense into something close to legendary. Just be sure to sign Vontae's grandma too...he's not going anywhere without her. Seriously though, we have no idea whether it was Philbin's idea to cut Vontae. That came from rumors and confidential sources, which doesn't add up to a hill of beans. I seriously think that Vontae will be coming back home to South Beach tomorrow.
He should be re-signed for less. He is very good in coverage and makes plays when healthy. Would be a great insurance policy if Taylor doesnt improve.
wow...that would definitely be put in the shocking and surprise category. I just think there were too many bridges burned on both sides
Letting Carroll get away would suck. The only explanation for it would be they really love Taylor and Davis.
This move had to be done considering the amount of time he played verses how much he is paid. He is good when healthy. Hope he comes back for a one year prove it deal.
Or he is going to be severely overpaid. He is good but if someone pays him #1 corner money they should not try to re-sign him.
Those are some nice stat's from last season but come on man are really comparing Carroll and Revis? Yeah they might of had similar combines but how does that matter?
