http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10570497/new-orleans-saints-release-darren-sproles-no-trade @DarrenSproles Thank you New Orleans for your support over the past 3 years! I will always be forever grateful. #WhoDat YES. WANT.
Well, last year I'd ask why, can Philbin even use someone like him. Now I'm wondering how Lazor would.
If this is about how Lazor would use him this year, why wasn't last year about how Sherman and not Philbin would use him?
Philbin refused to use Reggie anywhere close to what he could have. What makes anyone think that he'd use Sproles?
YES YES YES we need a receiving threat out of the backfield Miller and Thomas are useless. Get him and we finally might have some semblance of a check down/ screen game. Graded out unbelievably in the passing game even last year according to PFF.
Just stop it. Bush had 240 more yards and 1 less TD with the Lions than he had with the Dolphins in 2012. He's a 1400 yard, 7 TD guy. Philbin used Reggie as well as any of his coaches.
Good point. The wild card now is Lazor; but given how risk-averse Philbin is, it remains to be seen how much freedom Lazor will have. If any. Last year I would've said why, so Henning can run him into the middle of a 8-9 man box? This season? We'll see.
I'll pass. Past his prime. More of a pass catcher than a runner. Not the physical back we need. Could be a great pickup for another team, but not really what Miami needs right now.
Reggie also missed a couple games with the Lions.. But anyways, he proved he's far superior than Lamar Miller. And with Lazor on board I would assume with the way McCoy was used last year that he would want a playmaking running back like Reggie Bush. I think I rather target Dexter McCluster.
You stop it. He missed two full games and parts of others, vs 16 in Miami. Extrapolated he was a 1,700 yard guy. Here he was a 1,300 yard guy.
Philbin = Sherman = Philbin. Why do I think it's different this year? Because while I don't think Philbin is a good coach, I don't think he's stupid either. What's the point in firing Sherman, bringing in Lazor and keeping the exact same offense.
Any reason why the fascination for ex-Saints RBs to be with the 'phins? Ricky then Reggie and now Darren?
Bush should be catching 50-70 passes a year, every year. Philbin almost never ran plays designed to get him the ball in the passing game. It was shameful.
The first thing I thought when I read this was that he would end up in New England. I think he would be great in Denver too. Theres no way he picks us unless we offered him a huge deal and he's not worth it. I think he signs a small 2-3 year deal with a really good team.
Bush isn't a comparable receiver to Sproles. Bush does a couple things well, but again, there's a reason why he lost his job as a 3rd down back in NO, MIA, and he's being outproduced in the passing game in Detroit.
Sproles would really help lift some of the burden off the revamped offensive line. He's the ideal safety valve.
Yes. Because in your world, logic = stupid. Illogical = sense. To all the regular folks on the board, Sherman was Philbin's first OC choice. Ever. Sherman hired him for his first NFL job. What Philbin told Sherman to do, or how to implement, didn't work. We don't know if Philbin was forced to fire Sherman but we know he wasn't fired the day after the season ended. Ehateve offense we have next year, will be different than the one we have this past year. Hence, I'm excited to see what Lazor brings to the table.
Logic? lol. He was his first hire because he was a former successful NFL HC and a longtime friend. Basically, he hired the guy whose been there before so a guy who hasn't, would have someone to lean on. Regardless, none of what I said or you said has anything to do with the inane and ignorant "Sherman= Philbin = Sherman" that you claim to be "logic". They are not the same people, they don't have the same philosophies and they don't run the same kind of offenses. Let's also be clear here, regardless of why Sherman was fired, Philbin chose Lazor just like he did with Sherman, so for your ridiculous notion to be true, then Lazor = Sherman= Philbin.
Yes he chose Lazor, TO MAKE A CHANGE. A change from what? Again your logic fails you. In choosing Sherman he found an image of himself. Two almost pure WCO guys. In firing and choosing someone else, he's looking for something different. If not, why fire Sherman? He has full control over his staff. Unless you're suggesting he was forced to fire Sherman by Ross ... Lazor has his own wrinkles in WCO plus anything he may have learned from Kelly, and actually coached Reeves and Gibbs (here with Coryell variations). I'm more excited to see what he does with Tannehill with his QB experience actually. Similar philosphy, with Philbin's stamp on it. Not all WCOs are the same obviously, but they share enough history with strong roots in Green Bay to be similar enough. As Sherman stated earlier in the year, Sherman actually tends to want a more balanced run/pass attack but Philbin could care less about balance, and Sherman is okay with that.
My logic doesn't fail at all. Jesus man. Philbin choosing Sherman doesn't mean he was looking in the mirror. This is so effing ignorant and bat ****. You're just talking out of your ***.
Yeah, Philbin didn't purposely choose a guy with similar offensive philosophies as him. Makes PERFECT sense. I'm a west coast guy, lets hire an Air Coryell guy. Because my system sucks. Or do you find a guy who is going to execute YOUR vision? Your first HC job in the NFL and you're not looking to execute your vision? Actually, you might be right. Philbin may be more of a puppet than we originally thought.
Sproles is who I wanted when we got Reggie. I think he's tougher and better. 30 is getting a little long in the tooth though. If he can be had for a reasonable amount, perhaps an incentive laden contract, I think it's something to consider.
I'm fearing Sproles signing with the Patriots now too. Combine the way that he destroyed us last season with how the Pats usually gouge us with draws and screens, and its a painful thought.
Looking at GB during years under Philbin they don't throw it to RBs much. Average of 20-30 for the top pass catching RB, high of 45 with Brandon Jackson. Last year Sproles and Thomas caught over 140 by themselves, and the saints threw it more but not a ton more. 650 vs 594. People were clamoring for us to do the same with Thigpen after Sproles thrashed us. Think Philbin will want Sproles? If we do, I'd have to assume it's the influence of Hickey + Lazor
It all comes down to money. If Sproles can be had for a bargain (or even fair price) I say yes. If he's looking for one last payday, then I say know. He's a great player with a few more season left under his belt. I'd love to see him in Miami...
Who cares if he is 30 years old, we are not talking about a running back who has averaged over 300 carries a year like Ray Rice, Sproles should have plenty left in his tank.
I'm not seeing Sproles as a great fit at this point. We don't have a guy who can tote it between the tackles with much consistency/toughness, so I'm hoping the FO uses the backfield roster spots on finding THAT guy. Sproles is a part-time role player who isn't going to help a ton in the every-down run game. If we're going to spend veteran FA money on the backfield, I'd rather be a true RB. For a young QB, I just think a legit RB is so important...and we don't have one.
According to NFL Network, the Vikings are a possible landing spot for Darren Sproles. Sproles hasn't officially been cut by the Saints yet as they try to trade him. But if that doesn't work, we can easily connect the dots to Minnesota. New Vikings OC Norv Turner coached Sproles in San Diego from 2007-10 and Adrian Peterson has never excelled in the pass game.
I like Sproles on a 1-2 yr deal. He's still the best receiving back in the league. Last year, he led all RBs in yards per pass route run and didn't drop a pass all year. If my image of what Lazor will try to do is accurate, Sproles would be a great addition.
