This show is incredible. Considering this is gonna be an anthology series, it's setting the bar really high for future stories.

I can not wait for season 3 when it is Seth Rogen and Aziz Ansari.

I love the show, even if I do have to rewind it everytime Detective Mumbles decides to blather on for hours on end.

That scene at the end of the last episode was crazy good. One continuous shot for six minutes and beautifully shot.

I was also stoked to see Shea Whigham in the episode before last. That dude kills it on Boardwalk Empire.

Loving this show. Hope the season ends as strong as it began.

From a cinematography standpoint, I loved the 6 minute shot. Crazy hard to pull something like that off. I'm not convinced it was one continuous shot either, there were a few opportunities to seamlessly break. I need to research it more. Great flow at any rate, kind of like walking through a haunted house on Halloween.

From a realism standpoint, I was disengaged.

  6. Samphin

Samphin Κακό σκυλί ψόφο δεν έχει

The only real break opportunity I could see was when they first went outside and the camera panned up to a black night sky, before coming back down to show them crossing the street.

I asked a friend of mine who edits films for a living though, and he said he thinks it was a continuous shot, in his expert opinion. So take that for whatever it's worth.

That's worth a lot. There were 2-3 break opportunities that I saw. Usually when they pan through a wall (between room changes, in this case when they go in and out of buildings) or up close to something. Those are really easy effects to do post-editing to splice two pieces of film together.

That said I don't shoot enough to speak authoritatively about it. Most of my experience is in post-production. GIK would have a good idea.

Regardless it was a cool scene.

This show is ****ing amazing. The cinematography, the score and the acting outshine anything I've seen in TV, possibly ever.

Great show. The next 3 eps should be darker than the first five, and that's pretty hard to believe.

    SPOILER:
How many TV shows can pull off someone getting popped in the head as awesome that? That was insane

Enjoying the show - apart from McConnahey's faux badassery. He just isn't able to effectively convey that he is capable IMO... the scenes of him with the bikers robbing the guys in the hood was just not well done... I do enjoy watching him and Harrelson play off each other though and watching him cut up beer cans while being interviewed by the other detectives. Woody is an extremely talented guy. He's carrying the show in some ways as his character is more compelling and believable I think.

If you guys like this series, and similar genre, check out the Red Riding Trilogy. Netflix has it...

I thought this was the strongest episode from start to finish, yet. I was captivated throughout.

The most terrifying thing for me...was Woody's teenage daughter. I am going to go hug mine right after this post to make sure she NEVER DOES THAT.

The musical score tonight was amazing. If anyone can get me the songs from tonight's episode, I would be in your debt.

I love how they both have the same story to tell about Reggie Ledoux, but it went down completely differently. That scene was gnarly, and the outcome of the kids was dark.

I know I am gushing, but that was a great piece of episodic television.

    Any theories anyone?

The end of the episode is laying a heavy stink on Cole being a suspect or even the Yellow King. Then there was Ledu talking to him, almost as if he knew him. Next weeks preview shows some victim seeming girl sayin "you made me watch." Does he black out and commit murders? Does he go psychotic while on drugs, stemming from his narco days? The show is def trying to put us on that scent.

    I have a theory.. ish?

If this episode wanted to tell us anything, it's that the killer has some kind of police connections. After the suicide, Cohle clearly makes it known that he doesn't trust the police. He outright says that he's suspicious of a special task force wanting to steal the case from them. He wants surveillance footage and audio (there is none), and the files on the two cops. Then he wants phone records. I think we have a "Red John" type of killer (for those of you who watch the Mentalist). Then Cohle starts to investigate the case some more and finds "made in error" message on various police... cases? What was he looking at, exactly? Either way, someone is messing up. And we're being lead to believe, it's intentional. Russ also quits the state police and disappears. Why? Perhaps it was because he knew he couldn't do the job as an official detective. He never quits though. Hence, True Detective...

In all honesty, I think the evidence points directly away from Hart, almost intentionally. Cohle has been the focal point of the two black detectives since the start. We've known they've suspected something about him. Perhaps TPTB are intentionally taking heat off Hart? For some reason, Reggie LeDeau seemed to know Cohle... I found that a bit strange. I didn't find Cohle's reaction strange at all, he genuinely thought RL was just nuts. And right when we might learn something, Reggie's head is blown off, by Hart. Hart's yellow shirt + Belt buckle= ??? Yellow King ??? Don't know, but Hart looked concerned and invested in learning about Rust's 2012 investigation.

It seemed like Cohle's involvement has been an obvious misdirection all along, since the start. While MM acting has gotten everyone's attention, Woody Harrelson has been amazing too, but in a much more subtle way. Is this intentional? From the start, this show has seemingly cared more about their relationship than the case. Week after week, that gap has narrowed. Why? Perhaps it's because these two will get together again and solve the case. But I'm wondering if these two will be reunited for different reasons... Take note, episode one featured a woman with antlers on her head. A crown, says Cohle. At one point, Russ asks Hart if he's ever been hunting. He mentioned killing a .10 point buck... Anyone know the point number on the buck that was on Dora Lang?

If Cohle isn't the killer (which I don't believe he is, at all, under any circumstances), then the ying to his yang is Hart. Cliche? Maybe... but if done right, the showdown could be epic, considering the show has featured their relationship so heavily. I read something interesting about their last names and possible symbolism (back when people thought Russ might be the legit killer). Cohle and Hart. Black heart?

Or perhaps, it's double misdirection. Which seems far more likely, given the intelligence of the show. Rust is obvious misdirection, so we begin to suspect Hart (he's the ying), and put the clues together to make him a suspect, despite the fact, it's not him either...

Or perhaps, Hart's daughter is the key to the ending of this show...

    - Hart's Daughter's arranged their barbie dollars in a suggestive manner, way back in episode 2. It showed 5 people, and one woman.

    - There is a picture, which I don't have atm, that shows Dora Lang surrounded by 5 guys on horses...

    - Hart's daughter draws sexual pictures in school.

    - This.... [IMG]

    - And is involved in gangbangs, I guess.

    - Hart says, his biggest flaw is that he doesn't pay attention... Could he have missed that his daughter was being molested by a cult? Is she dead in 2012 or will she die in the future?

also, never watch True Detective before Walking Dead. It makes you not care about TWD and its ****tiness.

For some reason I always felt it was that preacher at the traveling church who was the killer. Doing these rituals to rid the world of satan's influence, given the women were prostitutes.

Hell of show though. Next 3 weeks will be fun

Walking Dead and Sons of Anarchy are two extremely over rated shows I have to rush to watch because everyone spoils that ****.

Both shows are like soap operas. Weeks, literally weeks can pass and nothing of significance or interest will happen. And then extra emphasis is placed on shock the last two weeks. Next week, more bumbling through the woods, and a new jerk who will try to usurp Ricks leadership.

    True Detective is refreshing.

A-MEN. This new guy is just Governor 2.0 with a new woodbury. Same old recycled content from a show that could be so much more. AMC should overpay to get whoever is running True Detective.

I mean, the show had to go some where. Do the comics not go anywhere ever? There needs to be some science, some lab, some gov't compound. They had that in the beginning, and since, it's been one tired settlement that gets destroyed and onto to the next. This show needs to be about more than just running.

Yes, the comics never go anywhere. The concept of TWD is that it's a zombie comic without an ending. And Robert Kirkman (creator) says we'll never know how the zombie apocalypse happened or why. The CDC compound was written specifically for the show and won't likely ever reappear. The problem with TWD isn't that it's not going anywhere, the problem is it doesn't handle the human condition in a serious manner. That show misses Frank Darabont terribly. It was his vision and AMC **** on him w/huge budget restraints.

oh, and nice catch w/the 5 beer can men.

Good chance chance it's a cult thing. Tuttle will be on next week's episode so it looks like they're diving right into that.

Also they mentioned Tuttle dying right after Cohle re-emerged in louisiana.

damn... I thought Tuttle would be back somehow because he's a great actor (Boardwalk Empire's Eli). I had forgotten Tuttle was his name and now that I know he dies, I'm kinda bummed.

I like it when Clark Kent is researching and is into a show (Lost). Never missing a thing. The five figures out of a beer can have some type of significance. And with the daughter drawing the spiral brand way back then, something is up.

what happened to the ginger dude?

I was a bit disappointed for there not to be an actual shootout at Ledoux's compound. That part caught me by surprise. Not as surprised as the dude that blew himself up  Hart is the yellow king? I don't see it. He's too much of a simpleton. Although him shooting Ledoux is suspicious. Rust Cohle I don't think he's the yellow king either. The guy is just a detective of everything. He's great... and with them not being in the show after this season, I can't think that either of their character's is central to the main theme of the show. Which we don't truly know what that is yet. Is it the cult led by the yellow king? It sure looked like Ledoux was the yellow king to me. Really wanted to see more of Ledoux torturing people and doing his own thing  :shifty:

This might be one of those shows that will leave you wanting to go back and watch from the start. It has a Usual Suspects feel to it. Interviewing someone in present time and telling a story. Although here, there's two interviews. It's also dark as hell and reminds me of Silence of the Lambs with the dialogue between Clarice and Lector... I feel like I'm missing stuff. Rust goes back to the school, where they were before being led onto Ledoux. He goes back and finds a **** load of those stick statues (lack of the proper terminology is not lost on me). The guy that was out front, doing the landscaping, riding the lawnmower, thought there was something about him.

Anyway, prediction... this will end up with the powers that be somehow being involved... it's politicians and religious leaders who will be behind it. Without evil, there is no need for "good." Rust is onto them. That's why he's doing stuff in secret. However, his dependency on drugs will be his downfall. But why the big gaps between known murders? If you want the public to live in fear, you'd release all that there was to release. eh... conspiracy is right!

that article must have been written before the last two episodes. The monster that Cohle refers to at the end of that episode, we then see Ledoux walking around his "compound." So he's referring to Ledoux... or is he?

Nice catches with the pics and dolls, guys. I wouldn't have noticed that on first watch.

From the pressure they were under at first, with the Governor and that smarmy preacher closing ranks using the task force, it's been clear that the real killer is someone the Governor is trying to protect; or he's being tasked to protect.

Only three eps left? Damn. Is this the best show on television?

I don't think that would be fair. There are a lot of scenes with Marty, alone...drunk...whatever. It kind of betrays the audience if it was him. There would/should have been some sort of psychopathic tell if so. And the show makes Cohle too good of a detective for the Yellow King to be riding along right beside him all this time.

Marty said his worst trait was being inattentive. Where would his daughter conjure up these images? Maybe grandpa factors in down the road? Marty's father in law. Just an angle.
