I don't think I have ever seen a mess like this in the NFL. -It starts with Ross being a part time owner trying to "better deal" Sparano while he was still head coach and looking like an idiot doing it. -Enter Ireland (was hired through the "buddy system" with no GM experience) went on to ask a player at the combine if it was true his mother was whore. -Enter Philbin (with no NFL experience as a head coach) brings in all of his buddies if they are qualified or not, including Jim Turner as his OL coach (with no NFL experience) and Ryan Tanehill (another beneficiary of "buddy system") and refuses to bench him in favor of a more mobile and more experienced back up even when doing so could have won us a few extra games. Gee, big surprise, Jim Turner our OL coach with no experience can't handle the talent and they end up in a scandal. These people need to grow up and stop hiring their buddies. Shula just hired the best people for the job and never hired all of his buddies. This 3rd grade mentality NEEDS TO END! The best thing that could ever happen to this team is if Shula became our new owner and Marino became our VP of football operations. I hope Ross is good at real estate because he is a clust#r F%$#K as an NFL owner.
like i said months ago, philbin is just like leslie frazier....useless as head coaches. quiet, bland, boring guys who stand on the sideline and do literally nothing. if they werent able to make it to their games, no one would ever notice. you see where it got frazier. joe should have been fired right behind him.
yea he's safe, especially this deep into the offseason, which is actually fine by me because if/when the team sucks this season Ross can finally clean house.
Wow, call me crazy but considering Philbin was never told the extent of these EVERYDAY NFL ISSUES I would much rather my head coach focus on game planning and trying to develop a young potential franchise QB. Joe reacted and reacted well when he was informed about Martin's depression, ofcourse he wasn't trying to get to the bottom of the locker room culture because it's common place in groups of athletes. If you think Joe is a bad coach then so be it, but he doesn't deserve to be indicted in this overblown media frenzy. Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
Part of me agree's with you, then the other half of me says as the head coach you have to know whats going on in your locker room. Part of being a head coach is creating a TEAM. One of the hardest things to do, is make a bunch of individually talented guys into a team. You have an offensive and defensive cordinator to game plan, position coach's to work with players, as the head coach you are in charge of the collective of all that stuff. IMO Joe shouldn't be gameplanning, he should be looking at the game plan created and tweaking and giving idea's. I also don't believe there is any way that Turner didn't know this was all going on, with all the information gathered in the Wells report it doesn't seem like it was really that big of a secret. If Turner knew it was going on Joe knew it was going on and just wanted to ignore it and concentrate on the X's and O's which IMO is his biggest problem as a head coach. Those kinds of guys are great coordinators, but not always great leaders.
that doesn't impress me at all Sparano was a clown that murdered Ronnie Brown's Career and ruined Chad Henne's short career. our problems started when the Tuna came to town and got worse when MR Ross bought the team.
Considering our record while he was here, that should put the final nail in the coffin of the concept of the coach needing to be a motivator.
You know what? Maybe Martin can be a good player somewhere. I can't blame him for not progressing when you can't even trust your coaches.
Specially when you consider its poor performance you think he would be all over that. He is responsible for the organization he put together, what about Sherman isn't he responsible for the offense. Philbin is a weak manager.
Sparano never had a Quarterback. Chad Henne can't even decisively beat out Blaine Gabbert, and Jax is probably going to shop for a QB. If Sparano had Tannehill from day one, I bet he'd have lasted at least another two years here. No QB is the reason Sparano lost his job, imo. Happens all the time in the NFL. -------- But anyways, echoing what people have said... Only in Miami is the Head Coach of the team not held responsible/accountable for the oversight of his own staff and the seriously dirty sh-t that was going on within an entire offensive unit. One staff member is treating a player like utter sh-t, and another staff member is himself being treated like sh-t. Gotta raise the bar for the HC. If he did see it, shame on him for not acting. If he didn't see it, shame on him for not understanding that it's his team/lockerrroom to run - he simply must take more intiative to fulfill that role of responsible leader as HC. And I mean, this is a guy who hasn't won anything either. Current resume in Miami: - took over middling team (7-9, 7-9, 6-10) and team is still middling under him (7-9, 8-8), though it appears we might have a QB - led team during one of the worst late-season collapses we've seen in recent memory - led team/lockerroom while team/staff behavior and respect went haywire.
http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10458607/lose-crucial-parts-code-nfl-locker-rooms Mark Schlereth on the subject of Miami's culture: Defend Philbin if you must, if that's what you need in order to hang onto your fandom. But know this: when you're in charge, you're responsible. Joe Philbin is complicit in this disaster, whether by tacit approval or by virtue of being clueless. There's no other possibility.
yeah i dunno either way it looks bad for philbin imo at the end of the day what goes down with the team lands on the head coach
A typical NFL HC according to Dolphin fans: - Psychic. - Has the NSA track every phone call, text message, email, tweet & social media post of his players and reads the transcripts hourly. - Could take ANYONE and after a montage set to 80s music, that someone could QB a SB team. - Gives speeches so stirring they could inspire mice to fight lions before, during & after a game...every game...and often in practices. If the coach doesn't do those things he's a failure and should be fired quickly.
lol. And your typical coach can lock himself in his office and not make it a point to see, care about, or address what's going on with the staff he's employed. Brilliant. It wasn't like this was some isolated incident with one or two people. There were several players and staff involved (including an entire offensive unit) and several instances of some pretty vile sh-t going on. The guy in charge has to keep a pulse on the workplace he's running to ensure that it operates smoothly and that people are treated properly. Pretty basic stuff. Philbin failed at it.
You'll notice I didn't quote your post when I made mine. So i wasn't responding specifically to your post. Forum 101. Strawman indeed.
Yeah, the Wells report was just a list of text messages. Nothing in there actually transpired in person.
Is it not weird to anyone that a trainer didn't feel he could go to the head coach about problems? Martin is one issue, but veteran Nate Garner and a trainer are two VERY different issues and establish a trend. Sent from my GT-P3110 using Tapatalk
Here's that glorified list of text messages. As CK pointed out, Philbin was a freaking o-line coach? He needs to be psychic to know that the unit that is his specialty, (I'll bold this because it needs it): THE WORST PERFORMING UNIT ON THE TEAM BY FAR has some serious issues with workplace conduct starting with their position coach and is actually putting the organization at decent liability for multiple workplace harassment lawsuits? So, again, the o-line is responsible for the team not making the playoffs, becoming the laughingstock of the league, and possibly facing lawsuits (not just one), but the former o-line coach turned head coach needs to be psychic to see it? Okay... Also, if somebody who works for you hates coming to work every day and you can't see it or do anything about it (especially somebody in a position as important to the team's success as Martin's), you don't have the people skills to be in a position of leadership at a single fast food restaurant, let alone an NFL team.
WRONG. Our Lockeroom Floor is impeccable. I challenge you to find a gum wrapper or any debris on that floor. That's leadership.
This is not about text messages, This is about a lack of LEADERSHIP! I still think after reading this report,Philbin is still in denial that this stuff occurred....on his watch. Who takes responsibility for Turner? How about the guy who hired him. Who takes the fall on a national embarrassment...How about the guy in charge. The fish always stinks from the head......especially when the head is buried in the sand
Again, Philbin met with Martin. Martin never told Philbin he had a problem with other players. Philbin still got him help. You guys are effing literally pissed Philbin didn't read martin's texts and read his mind to know what the problem actually was. What you're expecting in this situation is impossible.
Umm, you do realize that good ol boy Wayne hired Ireland, right?
I effing literally expect him to know of a huge problem going on in HIS teams locker room...On his least effective unit...with a player on that unit he knows is having issues. And you are blind sided when this blew up...Buck stops at the top...Thats Philbin. I guess the only way a coach knows there are problems is by checking players text messages? Wow.
Again, think through what you're talking about. If Martin tells no one on the team he's upset, why would anyone think Martin has a problem with what's going on? Please don't respond with meaningless cliches like "pulse of the locker room" or "buck stops here" and explain in specific detail how Philbin should have known what was going on in Martin's head if Martin did everything he could to hide what he was feeling.
He does very very well at reading Q - cards. although sometimes if written in cursive he stumbles.....
You are not allowed to come here and speak the truth. Everything in the organization is fine. Nothing to see here. We have a winning culture with a track record of fantastic success.
I like Joe Philbin. I want him to succeed. For him to have no idea of the huge problems going on...or any of his coaches is inexcusable. Not only the problems with Martin,Incognito, the drug use, the abuse of the staff, strip bar meetings, simulated sex acts on a field.etc. Philbin and his coaches knew and saw NOTHING? This might be his only chance at being an NFL HC and he has to provide leadership...and direction...and accountability from his staff and players. He also has to look at his own accountability.
That's got to be the worst part of this whole cluster. Remembering the glory days of the porn-stasched one.
Whether Philbin knew or didn't know is besides the point. He's the head coach. the HCIC. He did not create an organization where 1) players and coaches wouldn't have acted like they did, or 2) players, coaches or staff wouldn't immediately inform Philbin of what was going on. Philbin was an afterthought in all of this and this isn't unique to this situation. I'm still waiting for anyone to tell me what Philbin brings to the table.
