Only 2 years is pretty uncommon for a new GM hire, no? but Philbin has 2 years left on his deal, looks like the two really are tied together, or so we can hope.

I'm glad it wasn't a 5 year deal. Now I can put the gun and noose away.

2 years? Really? Not many candidates would accept such a contract length. That's certainly not a sign of confidence from the owner to be honest. Would make it easier to ditch him sooner than I expected. Good news if true.

At the same time, it will be interesting to watch the press conference tomorrow. Ross can't claim that Hickey was the guy all along or that he is fully confident going forward. Still a weird hire.

Could be the reason other candidates declined the job. Smart move by Ross? Id say so..

    In other news,
the ThePhins community theme song has been changed to "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", sung by the late Michael Clarke Duncan.

That's the best news I've seen in weeks with the Dolphins.

I am not necessarily in the crowd that seems to be certain Hickey will fail, but this is good news to me because it means that Ross might be willing to blow the whole thing up sooner rather than later if they fail.

If Ross tries to pull that one off, and the media there tomorrow don't call him on it, shame on them.

Not me, It's at least a year too long, if not two...

We'll see how it goes I guess. Not like we have any other choice.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, it's actually good. It matches up with Philbin having 2 years on his deal , essentially meaning its easy to clean house if this year goes terribly bad, or not as planned. After this season, theyre both essentially "lame ducks" with one year left on their deals. So, its do or die it seems.

It does for Ross. Makes it easier to cut ties with him and Philbin if they fail this year. He would only have one year remaining as opposed to 4 or 5.

He's not tied to them long term. You dont look as stupid for firing him and Philbin after this season if things go downhill with Hickey's offseason and roster, and with Philbin's coaching of this team. Going into next year, they're both in "lame duck" status. so, really its a prove it kind of deal for Hickey to make sure he's not a total prick, and failure as a GM. A deal that lines him up with Philbin in the firing squad line if things don't work out. To me, the deal says 2 years, but if I'm Ross, that 2, really means 1 unless they all prove they deserve more time. Lets face it, the odds are stacked against them both really.

Now just make sure to not give him an extension if we win 3 games in a row.

I guess. But you think if he does a terrible job and we miss the playoffs that they wouldn't clear house anyways most likely.

What length of contract did Licht get from the Bucs? How about all the new GMs last year? Is a 2 year deal really all that out of the ordinary?

Well I agree. But he still can be fired regardless of a 1 year deal or 6 year deal.

Basically what Ross did at GM was buy high and sell low, ignoring all pertinent crap that drove down the value of the position in the process as if he thought the GM opening alone would create a stampede of top notch candidates. If he's so insistent on Philbin, Aponte, and so forth, he should've kept Ireland along with them to either wipe the disappointing slate clean next year or to hope he achieves enough stabilization next year to secure a new GM w/o having to sell low.

I'm starting to believe the reports that what Ross wanted to do was keep Ireland in charge of personnel but make Aponte his boss. He never intended to bring in a personnel guy over Jeff.

Smh if Ross has this little confidence in his current personnel, he should have just fired Philbin and restarted the whole thing, instead of basically putting it off for 2 years.

From an ownership standpoint a two-year deal is the equivalent of a one-year deal given to a player.

In both cases the timeline for making an evaluation is one year. It's just that you don't ever want your GM or your HC to be in the final year of their contract because you don't want them being stupid with the franchise's long term solvency in order to buy themselves a little more time in the short term.

It's really crazy when you think about this hire...the fact that he was like 10th on the wish list is completely irrelevant to him, this is a guy who probably would have never been offered a GM position on any other team, not only that but there was a good chance that he was about to lose his current job in Tampa, and here comes Miami not only offering him a job but a promotion to the highest front office executive position on a team. he doesn't give a **** that it's a 2 year deal, it's a raise, a promotion, his dream job, one would assume...I mean accepting the offer was a no brainer for this guy.

Even with his raise, Hickey had to come a lot cheaper than Caserio or some of the other guys we interviewed.
