I'd be ok with all of those. But as we saw in the NFC championship game, sometimes kickoff returns do happen and do change the course of the game. So these aren't useless yet. Games decided by missing a kicked extra point have to be somewhere in the .001%. Not enough to keep the play in the game. And let's be honest. The idea of 44 athletic guys doing physical battle against the opposing 44 guys for 60 minutes and the game coming down to a single kick by the least athletic guy on the field doesn't seem ludicrous to anyone else? I'm amazed this play(a holdover from the invention of the game) has lasted this long.
lets play flag football, tackle football is unkind & has too many rules. flag football would open the game to a more diverse group of people who would like the opportunity to play professionally. and it would be gender friendly. over half the people in this country are female. coed flag football http://sportsmonkey.com/pages/flagfootballrules
Why is that the stupidest thing you've ever heard?? That's essentially the way it is now. The 7th point is basically automatic, if you go for two and get it, you get 8, if you dont get it, you're left with 6. Theyre just calling the extra point automatic, which is it. I read the stat somewhere last night... only 5 were missed this year, out of 1280 or something like that. Sounds pretty much automatic to me. Who cares really. I'd rather see them make the PAT kick harder. Move it back, angle it, narrower uprights, or some narrower target of some sort. Something, anything. Otherwise, I'd agree with them in their push to eliminate it. It's pointless, and I'm sure most kickers could kick it with their eyes closed now.
I'm not sure I'd agree with that statement. The last stat I heard on the subject was that since 2004 99.1% of extra point kick attempts have been made. And I believe that the trend is that the percentage has been increasing over time. Most people would consider +99% of anything to be about as near to automatic or near to a sure-thing as you can get. And I doubt that most would characterize something that happens less than 1% of the time as "plenty".
ridiculous... maybe we should boycott NFL games in favor of college or local HS games indefinitely... from Machiavelli to Shakespeare it has been known: absolute power corrupts absolutely
This is SO EASY to fix, simply make it a kick from 45 yards and make it a lot more difficult. Simple, make me commissioner.
I wouldn't. Read here: http://www.thephins.com/forums/showthread.php?80676-Eliminating-Extra-Points/page2 Bottom of the page. OK, take out the word plenty then. Can we agree to "some" games? I stand by the rest.
Extra points weren't always "automatic..." or "ottomatic" as referee Mike Carey would say. Since they've changed the rules to stop the center and other linemen blocking from getting injured (no jumping, leaping, lining up over the center etc..), PAT's have become.... easy.
I'm still waiting for them to move the kickoff spot back to the 30. All these touchbacks are annoying.
Came into this thread to suggest this (the 'moving it back' part). Move the kick back to the 15 yd line and then it gets interesting. Should still be made, but in stormy weather you might end up going for two more often instead. Getting the success ratio down to about 90% would make for more interesting games.
No Raffy. I stand by the rest of my post. You know, if I didn't know better I'd swear you were trying to bait me into an argument.
I am seriously not trying to bait you. I rarely bait anybody. I was trying to clarify your position. If you recall my initial response, I never questioned the majority of your post. I feel that whether or not you're open to change is a subjective opinion. It is not inherently wrong or right. If you believe that extra points are as exciting as kickoff returns or FGs or that changing the yardline that extra points occur from would change the game in some fundamental way that is your opinion. Nothing in your opinion was objective other than your claims that extra points were not about as automatic as anything can be and that plenty of games had been decided by missed extra points. Those two items are objectively quantifiable. In your response you modified your statement from "plenty" to "some" but it was unclear to me whether you were still claiming that something that happened +99% time was not a near sure-thing, so I asked.
I read somewhere the Nike contract is worth like 1.1 billion dollars, and that it seems to include exclusive advertising rights. As in, no logos except nike.
Im more upset they want to add to Thursday night games. Goodell has been told by countless people..its not enough recovery time for players. They are spending billions on concussions ..and preach safety making all these contact rule changes...yet still want to make more Thursday games. Sometime..you know..money ain't everything. I am a little surprised by the strong opinions in this thread. This is about as insignificant as it gets when it comes to rule changes.
Personally I love that fleeting moment of hope when a team scores a last second TD to tie, and needs the XP to win. That rush of hoping for a blocked kick is pretty nice. When it does happen rarely, its as exciting a play as there is.
i have a feeling if they took out extra points you would see field goal % go down I would assume kickers kicking extra points get some kind of rhythm that way
Somehow, I don't think so. The kick crazy amounts of kicks on gamedays between pregames and warmups on the sidelines. I don't think those 3-4 extra kicks are going to change anything.
the john carney missed extra point was the best.there was a blocked extra point in this years eagles/lions game.
The out-and-out elimination of the extra point is patently ridiculous. As has been mentioned here before, that one point can potentially decide a game, and while it may very well be a chip shot, there is always a chance (however slim) that it will be missed/blocked/otherwise screwed up. I agree with some of the other people that it just needs to be moved back slightly, to possibly the 20 yard line or so. Give the kickers more potential for a miss, and shorten the odds that it will be blocked or otherwise messed up.
This exactly. I could get on board with an idea like this. It's the opposite of making it automatic. Make it a little more difficult, thereby making the decision to go for two a little more involved. I believe someone else also suggested moving it to one of the hash marks as well.
I would agree with pushing it back to the 20 or so to make the kick more difficult. As pointed out, it would also make the idea of trying for two points more of an option. There is now a large chunk of time after a TD is scored before we get back to watching football. Not only because the extra points are automatic but also because the kickoffs result in touchbacks over half the time now. First they have to line up for the extra point, then try the extra point, then nothing happens while the TV goes to commercial, then we line up for the kickoff, after which there is another TV timeout. The most exciting play in football is followed by 10 minutes of kicking teams and time outs.
I'm 100% in favor of eliminating the XP. Teams can take 7, or take 6 and go for 2. The only reason to keep it as it is would be tradition, and when tradition is all that you have backing your argument, its time to move on to something more logical. I see no reasonable reason for keeping the XP kick in the game. I'm also totally in favor of eliminating the kickoff, and giving the team the ball at the 20. Eliminate injuries, eliminate penalties, eliminate turnovers on fumbles, and allow offense and defense to dictate who wins and loses most often. I understand that a lot of people like the kickoff return, but I never have.
I'd be fine with getting rid of the 1 pt PAT. It is by far the least interesting/exciting play in football. The 2pt conversion, on the other hand, is very interesting and exciting. I wouldn't have a problem with simply having all PATs be of the two point variety. On average, that would replace 5 or 6 boring and worthless plays per game with 5 or 6 very interesting and exciting ones.
I fast forward after touchdowns and through the XP and the commercials so I completely agree that the XP is a waste of time. I like the plan on the table that a TD is 7 or 8 if you do the 2 pt conversion. I try tune in 30-40 minutes late so I can FF commercials and Halftime. I always catch up to live TV by the 3rd qtr
Ask Tony Romo if he wishes there was no PAT in the playoff game vs the Shehacks a few yrs back. That play ended te boys season
