Look, I don't know why or how Ross does what he does. But I do know this, why the hell should Ross give a **** what other teams think of his GM hiring process? They're mad he's taking too long, **** em. It's not Ross' job to hire someone quickly so some other sad sack franchise can hire their GM.

I think you're giving Philbin waaayy too much credit for the offense's success in Green Bay. I'm not surprised by anything Barry Jackson reported in this column, least of all this part:

because it's exactly how I've felt about his true role in Green Bay from the day we hired him. I definitely don't think he was that instrumental in Rodgers development, that was all McCarthy and Tom Clements imo, Philbin has never been a QB coach in his entire coaching career.

What disgusts me is the level of nepotism Philbin employed at the expense of actual coaching ability, and for that alone I think he deserves to be canned b/c the ability to pick out a staff should carry nearly as much weight as the job done as a coach [which was also unspectacular]. Very few players emerge from college ready to excel at the NFL level, so if you can't hire a full staff capable of taking the players from A-Z then you gotta go.

Case in point, how many points did we leave on the field b/c our novice QB coach couldn't correct Tannehill's downfield passing issues, which one NFL scout deemed as easily correctable had Taylor had any ability as a coach. What was his prior QB resume? No previous coaching experience and 26 starts at Oklahoma as recently as 2006 and then going undrafted? That's like the blind leading the blind. Might as well hand Tannehill a mirror and tell him to figure it out himself.

exactly, Philbin isn't some QB guru, he never was, and Taylor was far too inexperienced, if Tannehill was to ever develop into a franchise QB it was going to be because of Mike Sherman or (if Sherman failed), his eventual replacement, which is why I wanted a strong QB coach for the OC position, like Kubiak, though I'll settle for Lazor.

I don't necessarily agree with you but I would like to use your post as a segue. Philbin is no longer an offensive coordinator. He's a head coach now, so what he did or didn't do with Green Bay's offense is irrelevant. All that matters is what he does as a head coach, and his ability and performance as HC has clearly seemed inferior to the work he did as an OC. He basically had a prior 28 year history of not being responsible for leading men [not so much as a one year stint as a college or high school head coach], and it apparently shows.

Even if Zac Taylor himself possessed the greatest passing mechanics in the history of football, he still had no experience coaching others up nor has shown an ability to adapt to different quarterbacks and their particular idiosyncrasies that could each require a different coaching approach. And let's not forget this isn't just about Tannehill, as we've got the guys behind him who need to be developed as well. How you draft a QB in the Top 10 and then give him Zac Taylor instead of an experienced QB coach is beyond me. If you're hell bent on hamstringing the organization's prized young QB with your OC's son in law then at least rent out Steve Clarkson for a month to get the coaching in.

I don't totally disagree with you, but nepotism is rampant in the NFL. It's just how it works. Coaching trees exists because of nepotism. Political(both D's and R's) parties set up their administrations and give favors that way all the time. Big businesses do it. It depends on the "right kind" of nepotism IMO, such as hiring guys that you've worked with before but have proven their ability to coach those positions. So its no such that in itself is the problem, its the approach. When Mike Shula got started in the NFL as a QB coach under his dad, he did a pretty good job and has turned into a pretty good OC. He hasn't been so good as a HC so far but there's a chance he could be someday. Maybe someday he'll attempt to fill his dad's Shoes(see what I did there?) and head this once proud franchise back to respectability.

yes, I understand this quite well thank you very much, hence me explicitly saying "at the expense of actual coaching ability" in the post's first sentence, but I appreciate the education. Sorry but it's really quite annoying when a poster ignores what another poster says in order to offer up a lecture like you just did.

Furthermore, nepotism being rampant in the NFL isn't an acceptable excuse for failure, mediocrity, or lack of player development.

dude, you said you "don't totally disagree with me", and that's only b/c you created a false argument by omitting the most important part of my post- the part that mentions sacrificing coaching ability. If you didn't disregard that part you would've instead been left agreeing with my post b/c you saying "nepotism itself isn't the problem; it's in the approach" is nothing but a restatement of what I initially said. Subsequently, rather than nutting up and apologizing for it you decided to carry on even further. Must be nice to live in your world where you can make up an argument that doesn't exist and then not own up to it afterward. So now who's the troll with the attitude problem?

Where there are reports Ross is off to London, and then China afterwards, and there is no GM in place for this weeks Senior Bowl, I have a problem. Where is the urgency to get the people in place to make the decisions needed to put this team on the right track.

Right now, it's frieghtening to imagine where this organization is headed, with this seemingly disorganization afoot. If it's going to be Gaine getting the job, do it, name him. Is it to be one of the guys working for another team this week ? What about the other teams, are they letting these guys work for them part of this week and then just come over to the Dolphins mid-week ? It's complete buffoonery.

I go back to the notion the man is doing this on purpose, to ruin the fanbase and give himself a reason to move the team. I cannot see anything else that makes sense. It sounds outrageous, but you can't dismiss it outright, because nothing should surprise you about this team anymore. Ross is setting himself up for more failure, and its the most helpless feeling just standing by and not being able to shake Ross and let him know he's on the road to disappointment - that is unless it's part of that sinister master plan to destroy us as a fanbase.

I don't think anyone here is saying he made Rodgers.

He did, however, make the gameplans and install the offense week in and week out. It was him the dissected the opponent and formulated the strategies necessary to defeat that opponent. He did that with amazing success. There's no reason to think he couldn't do it again with the right players.

Furthermore, you can not have a staff that is horrible AND a GM who was the worst ever getting horrible talent....while still being on the cusp of the playoffs and finishing with an average record....all while dealing with the largest scandal in team history. In fact, if Ireland was as bad as you screamed about for years, then the results we got are impossible if Philbin is less than above average. You simply cannot have it both ways.

This is the key point. It focuses primarily on the offensive coaches - all of whom are Philbin's guys.

So can Lazor select his own staff or is he just slotted? If the OL and QB coaches are not gone - the team is pretty much doomed next year as is Lazor.

Honestly, if I were Lazor I'd have spent another season with Kelly and get a deeper understanding of his offense and then he's likely to get several interviews next year as well. A risk, but not much more of a risk than this year.

So, Lazor will likely be next year's Brian Gaine - he'll be interviewed for the HC job after Philbin is fired - one of the 25 guys the Dolphins will interview from Jan. 2 through Feb. before they finally decide on a coach.

I think you are mis-reading the post. It's not teams looking to hire a GM - waiting on Ross. It's the 27 teams with personnel directors who have interviewed with Ross who are waiting for his decision - so they are not in limbo with a key player in their front office. They want Ross to be done so they don't stay in limbo and they can get on with replacing their guy and be prepared for the draft. Ross doesn't have to do what they want of course; but at the same time this is not pure competition; it's a league with some degree of respect and cooperation necessary. It's not like Apple who would be happy to put Microsoft out of business completely (or vice-versa).

The deeper issue is that Ross' is taking too long and not getting a GM in place to run the team.

    Ross is a fail. Period.

    Disagree.

Yes, he was absent, trusting and loyal.
Yes, he needed to be woke up.
Yes, he maneuvered a sweet little ****-you to Ireland that caused him to take it or leave it. Ireland left it. Ross achieved his goal.
Yes, its taking time to replace Ireland, but it appears there is a reason. Not just any GM will do.
Yes, Ross wants to get this right.

Personally, I think you would be right if Ross failed to do anything at all, but things are changing. Its a process, Be patient.

When one says associate of several players the first thing to comes to mind is an agent. Take in mind that he/she could have an agenda of his/her own, including perhaps a disgruntled relationship with the FO who indirectly pay their salary. Just my opinion on the matter I take this recent news as a fluff job.

I am a bit of a geek, so I wanted to point this out. Not trying to fanboy for either company, because I think both have their drawbacks.

As for the Phins, I see a middle ground on this argument. I would love it if Ross would sell the team to someone more competent.

I think the coaching staff has done a good job on some things and a bad job on some things. I am looking for results, and anything less than a wild card should get Philbin fired after next season.

I thought it was a bad move to go into the season without an NFL running back on the roster, and I thought it was a bad move to go forward with the o-line the way it was. If that was all Ireland, then I'm hoping next year turns out a little better. If Philbin had any input into that, saying "these guys are good enough," or whatever, then he'll be out of here soon enough.

Its hard to say we do or don't have an NFL halfback when the line is letting penetration in two yards deep most plays, and not ever getting to the next level that rare occasion the initial blocks are decent

What I got was The talent is much much better then people let on because it does not fit there agenda that Ireland was terrible. With the exception of LB ans OL. OL being Philbin's career path should have been handled and it wasn't strengthening the belief that the coaching is less then desirable.

So out of 12 coaches only 3 have NFL experience and two are gone? And we just hired one or two so we're back at 9 or so with no NFL experience except the past couple of years? That's wack
