This made me literally laugh out loud. Peyton has a losing record against only two coaches that he has played at least five times. We all know Bellicheat is one but the other?

Wanny. Second best coach ever?

I give Zach Thomas full credit for those defensive efforts, he was our defensive QB. I think Manning would likely agree.

Our defense used to be scary... There was like one hole at safeties and one at our linebackers, but everyone else.. was just too damn good.

The Dolphins defense was a pretty big challenge to both Brady and Manning early in their careers. Physical man cover-2 and a good pass rush is a nice thing even to throw at established quarterbacks.

Running on us was a challenge because TimBo and DG allowed him to roam freely into the gaps, Surtain and Madison were dangerous, physical and actually caught footballs. They also had Brock Marion on the back end who was as solid as you got both tackling and covering. Oh, and some young kid named Jason Taylor speed rushing the hell out of the OT's.

That team (a lot like Seattle now) didn't need to blitz to get pressure, and when you have the back 7 we had, your room for error was very small.

Sounds like a great recipe for success no??

The 02 team as you know also had the best RB in football that year. And we missed the playoffs.

Wanny and Ray Lucas will always be on top of my most hated list because of that season alone.

Along with some really good CBs, they were able to get good, consistent pressure from the front four, especially the DEs. That's really the only way to stop guys like Manning and Brady.

(Not directed at you)....but when other teams get great and consistent pressure on Tannehill, its because his pocket presence sucks.

Yeah, I remember, after that game, Manning saying with his broken jaw; "They beat the s--t out of me" or something along those lines. That was awesome.

It started with Jimmy Johnson really, Manning was a very impatient QB early in his career, always wanted the big play. We used to sit back, give up the short stuff and waited for Manning to get greedy. Zach Thomas as mentioned above was the one LB in the league who could stand there opposite Manning and cancel out any changes made at the line of scrimmage.

Belichick took much the same approach. Remember back at the start of his career Manning was in our division which helped too, by seeing him so often.

    He has "good" pocket presence?

This is not a "one or the other", which is how most people prefer to argue.

I am a fan of RT, and a hopeful. But it was a combination of our o-line being god awful most weeks, and RT having poor pocket presence and that clock in his head not going off fast enough. He took more sacks than he needed to this year by holding onto the ball too long. Was it 50-50 blame on the sacks? No, it was much more on the line, but his pocket presence is not satisfactory yet. It is nuts to say ANYTHING "sucks" on RT. I believe he can grow in all facets of the position.

It's like his long ball...that along with pocket presence needs to get better. And if he can improve on those, the way he improved on tipped balls his rookie season, I'll be very satisfied.

Edit: or wait, do you really think his pocket presence sucks?

I still have the utmost respect for Manning for that game when we broke his jaw. Dude just got it wired shut and didn't even miss a start, IIRC. Tough SOB.

Very solid D but not dominant. Scary? I'd say that was the Ravens. The Dolphins D often got off to a very good start or would have good stretches but then at some point would have bad breakdowns at the most inopportune times in big games (regular season or sometimes playoffs) and cost the team the division or a bye.

Offense was pretty bad but then when it would score a lot - the D had too many breakdowns. I still feel the pain of the 40-37 MNF loss to the Jets when we led 30-7 in the 4th quarter. It has trouble against some physical offenses and deep pass offenses (like the Rams). Other than the two DTs the D was a bit thin; and then the safety position was very inconsistent. Great DTs; a great DE, MLB and two great CBs.

But, it was a very good D. had that D been around in the late 80's and early 90's I think the Dolphins and Marino would have had a great shot at a SB. Marino in his heyday with that D - and both the O and D would have been more dominant because of the confidence the other had in one another (Marino's statistics have a degree of negativity because of the pressure he constantly felt to make things happen - and that led to more INT's - because the D was so horrible. Sometimes I do think this happened with the D we had in the early 2000s).

I think that team would've been best led by Chad Pennington, he never turned the ball over. Teams needed gifts from our offense to compete.

I'd have settled for better play calling on offense.

We didn't even play conservatively, we played scared on O

Except the ONE TIME we tried to trick those Patriots in the last game of the year....lead, clock NE's worst enemy, we throw 3 incomplete passes. They get the ball and ofcourse win.

Why did Mare kick it out of bounds? Why did the kick returner drop the ball? There was a lot more going wrong than calling three passes. Even though Chambers did drop one of the balls.

Please quote where I said this is why we lost, since you responded as if that was my statement.

Aqua was talking about the scared play calling, I merely pointed out an instance in wich that conservative approach would've finally made sense, and they did the opposite.

I remember when Chan Gailey was OC I used to call the plays before we ran them and was right like 90% of the time.

First down - run off right tackle

I apologize, I get emotional when talking about that game. I hate that game so much. SO, so, so much. I would rather watch the Jets comeback 100 times with the Bills and Jets loss this season 100 times more than watch that game once.

We could also talk about a pretty tick tacky PI call also, but that's become a customer when playing NE.

Good point, it is not a game against New England without a tick tacky PI call or a roughing the penalty call for breathing on Brady

People like to crap on Wanny for sucking as a coach, squandering talent and running Ricky directly into the ground, BUT THERE IS NO DENYING that the man got his teams to play well enough to beat Peyton Manning led teams a few times (mostly around when Manning was just getting started in the league).

Wasn't that the game Marino ended up schooling Payton (a remarkably talented scrub nevertheless) toward the end, and the camera panned across in the stands, to his parents and caught Archie Manning looking on, all teary eyed?

Lorenzo Bromell messed up Manning's face once really well in I think 1999. Seems like he drove Manning's face mask into his nose and bloodied it. Blood was streaming down Manning's face. He took a lot of violent shots that game. Marino took some too, and we won the game with his late heroics but seems like he pinched a nerve in his neck/shoulder area that game and was never totally right again after that. Huard had to relieve him the next week against the Pats because Marino couldn't even throw a 10 yd out. Huard led a late comeback to get the win in that game and seems like one more, before Marino was able to play again.

Also have to realize that those wins against Peyton by Wanny came at a time when Miami's phenomenal defense at the time wasn't neutered by the changes in officiating that occurred post 2005 playoffs.

Man, the game will never be like that again. QB's were warriors back then just like the rest of the players. WR's could get smacked too. I would love to see the stats Marino could put up in today's powder puff league.

As an aside I really worry about concussions. Guy gets a couple and his career is potentially over. Imagine if that's your new 1st round draft pick or stud _________? That will suck.

every time i get to thinking about that 2002 season i get emotional, especially that ****ing new england game. what ZT said after that game still rings true today over a decade later.
"This team does not have a killer instinct,'' Miami linebacker Zach Thomas said. "You can say all you want about how we should have won, but I'm sick and tired of hearing how good we are. We can't win a big game.''
