Jaguars had better TV ratings than Dolphins in 2013 by Andrew Abramson The Miami Dolphins came close to a playoff berth, but it didn’t translate to TV viewers. The Dolphins ratings rose slightly from last year — 17.1 in 2013 after a 16.3 in 2012. But it was still fourth-worst in the league, ahead of only the two New York teams and the Raiders. Only the primary market (Miami/Ft. Lauderdale) was measured for each team. Jacksonville, arguably the least popular team in the NFL, finished two spots ahead of Miami at 18.3. While the Dolphins mediocre play in the 2000s and 2010s has certainly hurt the team’s popularity, the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale market is one of the most transient areas in the country which might further hurt TV ratings. Only 1/3 of adults in South Florida were actually born here. It might also partially explain the low ratings of the New York teams — not that either team gave fans much hope this season. Regardless of the community’s makeup, the Dolphins were hoping for more local interest after spending the most money in free agency in the offseason. - See more at: http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/thed...s-than-dolphins-in-2012/#sthash.buTL8JMD.dpuf First time I went to see the dolphins down in davie I must admit I was disappointed.I stayed in ft laurderdale and a block from my hotel was a Philly bar with all eagles, phillies and flyers ****.****ing pats bar,and the sports radio host had a newyork accent and was talking about the Yankees.I thought WTF am I still in the northeast. It took me hours to find a dam dolphins jersey to take home for my son. So I am not surprised by the tv ratings down there but the jags have better ratings?Really!
That is stupid. Not you, the research. Dolphin fans are highly dispersed through South and Central Florida where Jag fans are not. Of course if you measure ONLY the primary spots the Jags will win. Also I can find you a Dolphin jersey at any retail store as well as any sports store. Not sure why you couldn't find one honestly.
Part of this has to do with the horrible offense and the team constantly playing down to the competition . who in hell wants to watch a Joe Philbin coached team score 14 points . we need one thing and that is Star Power the Heat have star Power while the dolphins don't even come close to having star Power . Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas are not even celebrities if we had drafted a better qb like Luck or Cam Newton people would more likely watch.
The fact that it only measured the immediate metro area makes it worthless. I would bet that nationwide, the Fins absolutely crush the Jags in ratings.
This is absurd (the study). Phins are a National team. You should see the following we have in Upstate NY for crying out loud.
I wonder if DirecTV is able to track how many viewers each game has on Sunday Ticket. That would be really cool data to look over.
Well I don't need to worry about finding a jersey thanks to some very good websites I found online in recent years.I do remember going to some giant flea market down there and they did not have one dolphin jersey.I did find a mall that exactly had some jerseys.I bought chris chambers for my son. Another thing that kinda of dissapointed me was we were playing the packers and give or take it seemed half the stadium was packers fans.Back in the 70s and 80s in the orange bowl the dolphins had one of the best home advantages in the nfl. What happended down there?
That never would've been a given to me. I know the Dolphins have a terrible following in their home city, but I didn't think it'd b that bad, worse than the Jags who are an utter joke on the field. Why is the research stupid? Measuring local followings is a legit question.
Because the Jags have a larger viewing area, including cities like Orlando who have to carry Jags games over Phins games, their area also reaches over to tampa throughout the northern part of Florida and through Georgia. Where as Miami has, Miami, Ft Lauderdale, West Palm, and generally up to Osceola county line.
Yeah they can. Call them and they will tell what package you should be on compared to what you are paying for. I did that few years ago. They recommended a down grade.
I still don't get why more people don't adopt south florida teams when they move down here. I get it if your 65 and retiring and have followed your NY team or wherever your whole life, but I have friends who have moved down here and adopted the Miami teams. Seems like most don't though, despite the fact this is now their home.
Honestly, not surprised at all. The dolphins fan base is very spread out, add to the fact that Miami has absolutely perfect weather in the winter with unlimited outdoor activities. I don't think it's a concern at all. BTW what's up with both NY teams so low???
Cosign, it's obviously because both teams sucked. For all the flack South Florida gets for being fairweather fans, looks like media lauded NY fanbase is pretty fairweather themselves.
