They could have just done the secondary interview on the second day.

I thought they mentioned there would be a second round of interviews. Maybe this was the most convenient for Xanders.

I want him to be our next GM, but I think we should temper our expectations a bit.

There's only 3 posts before yours and not a single one portrayed any expectations at all.

He was using the force to look ahead to my post, where I flat out say:

I expect Ross to bring this guy onboard...and I'll be mildly disappointed if he doesn't. Not that there aren't any other qualified candidates, this guy just resonates the most to me.

And I've never been one to give a damn what somebody else thinks of my expectations, so meh.

With Gamble out, I definitely want Xanders or Licht. I'd be OKAY with Farmer too, he's just the biggest unknown IMO but has good qualities.

It's implied he did well on the first day of interviews. It's expected he is at least one of the top candidates as deemed by Ross and the GM search crew. That expectation doesn't mean the job is his just yet, thus some people that are prone to jumping the gun should temper their expectations if they are expecting an announcement saying he is our next GM in the next few hours.

My last post on this lol. I'm surprised I had to explain myself especially after seeing how reactionary this board is.

I would honestly be optimistic if Xanders were leading the front office. I like what he represents.

I don't know him, and I don't know how well he personally recognizes talent. He could easily go wrong or make bad choices. I believe there's a reason the Broncos grabbed themselves a John Elway. I don't think a Brian Xanders secures Peyton Manning's services. There will still be a hole in our franchise's capabilities, in my opinion. But I think Xanders sets up scouting systems and processes well, has good concepts of value and risk control, will bring important new concepts into the scouting process, and appears to be a decent consensus builder. These are things that are important to me for the position.

I honestly believe Miami should do the same thing with Dan Marino that Denver did with John Elway. Where they should differ is that I don't necessarily want Brian Xanders to just teach Marino how to make personnel decisions and then leave everything to him. I would prefer Marino remain an overarching figure that adds his expertise to the personnel mix strategically (especially with respect to quarterbacks) but more importantly manages the vision for the franchise, the people in charge of making the football operation work, and functions as Miami's liasion to the rest of the league.

I think Xanders gets Peyton.. In my opinion Todd Helton did a lot of recruiting that people don't talk about, they just want to credit Elway with everything.

All the guys we haven't interviewed, Tom Gamble, Lionel Vital, Brian Gutekunst, Scott Fitterer. Our interview list is a 2nd rate list right now, partly because it seems Ross isn't willing to do what it takes to land the big fish.

This so much reminds me of the movie Moneyball, where Billy Beane brings in his new guy, and subsequently fires the old-school guys. Then, as the A's are floundering at first, you hear the old guy talking on the radio, bad-mouthing Beane's approach. That's what you're listening to and championing right now. The old guy, out of touch with the new school of how baseball is going to be played and won in the coming years. Later the same season, they break the win-streak record.

And you're telling us to raise our standards. Thanks, but no. I'd gladly have Xanders.

Specifically FROM Big O, who is one of the people who called Armando. And the people that have been in Big O's ear also got in Armando's ear.

One of them being Ted Sundquist who was fired from Denver in favor of his Assistant GM Brian Xanders, and still harbors ill feelings about that.

I bet you can't give one specific good reason why Brian Gutekunst or Scott Fitterer is a better candidate than Jason Licht or Brian Xanders, other than that those people weren't interviewed in Miami.

I think it's you who needs to raise your standards a bit, in terms of rationale that you'll accept for liking a guy or not liking a guy.

That doesn't mean we should flat out ditch Fitterer from the process. He comes from a successful organization and a successful team model that he helped find players for. I'd interview him just to see if he happens to open my eyes and surprise me.

I didn't suggest that. I suggested that LBsFinest is saying that this is a second rate interview process based on the non-participation of guys who are only being assumed by him to be superior to the guys being interviewed because of their non-participation in Miami's interview process. It's circular logic. He hasn't got a single good reason to assume either guy is superior.

It's odd that we're not perusing the Packers FO for a guy... I'd think we would have looked there with Philbin's amount of power with the Fins and familiarity with them.

Torn on Xanders, as despite the GM title he took a backseat to both McDaniels and Elway. He traded away Cutler and drafted Tebow in the 1st round. I do give him kudos for dumping headcase Brandon Marshall on a sucker (Ireland).

Other than Von Miller, who has or had (or who knows) a problem with immaturity and PEDs, his other 1st rounders were "meh"...

    Xanders First Rounders:
    2008 - 12 - Ryan Clady
    2009 - 12 - Knowshon Moreno
    2009 - 18 - Robert Ayers
    2010 - 22 - Demaryius Thomas
    2010 - 25 - Tim Tebow
    2011 - 2 - Von Miller

    Xanders Second Rounders:
    2008 - 42 - Eddie Royal
    2009 - 39 - Alphonso Smith
    2009 - 48 - Darcel McBath
    2009 - 64 - Richard Quinn
    2010 - 45 - Zane Beadles
    2011 - 45 - Rahim Moore
    2011 - 46 - Orlando Franklin

I think Jason Licht is interesting as it'd be nice to have someone with that much experience in the Pats FO, as well as the Cards, as they've done well the past decade, other than at QB.

Licht has been on staff with one Super Bowl Champion (New England-2001), 2 NFC Championship teams (Philadelphia-2004, Arizona-2008), and 2 AFC Championship teams (New England in 2001, 2011).

Licht was one of the 2 finalist for the Bears GM job as well.

We'll see how it shakes out...

Why would you read articles by grown men who write them using crayon/construction paper, while wearing special helmets. I've heard they get gold stars for using the big boy potty correctly.

Well..I mean...what happens if the team actually becomes good? Armando and Omar will have to go elsewhere to push their schtick. Thats what I dont get about sports journalism these days. You can write what you want with no consequences.

Well, if I were an old school guy who didn't understand statistical tools and thought that traditional scouting was the 'right' way to pick players, and now teams start looking at someone like Brian Xanders and saying "Yeah, his analytics background is a big plus... this is the kind of guy we want to move forward with," I think I'd probably badmouth him anonymously, too.

Ray Farmer doesn't make you obsolete. But Brian Xanders might.

Yes, certainly implied by the general direction of discussion is a fair assessment. But my expectations are mine alone, it's nobody's mission to temper them, it's impossible. If I am optimistic and get hopeful about something, that's me, and if it pans out GREAT...if not, I take the hit, I'm used to it.

It's nothing personal against you, everybody is who they are, I just take exception to statements like "we should" when the poster is really saying "I am, so should you."

After the last 2 games of the season, I need to grab on to anything I can get hopeful about! :)

First off I don't think there's anything "meh" about Demaryius Thomas or Ryan Clady. And he should get credit for Von Miller as he was personally convinced that Von was a "once in a decade" defensive player. He wasn't just along for the ride on that pick. I personally thought Ayers a good prospect. It didn't work out. That's too bad.

But Tim Tebow was a Josh McDaniels project. Xanders had to convince McDaniels on the idea of making sure they got Demaryius Thomas FIRST and then take their chances on getting Tim Tebow. That's why they traded down from 11 to 13, down from 13 to 24, and then actually traded back up from 24 to 22 for Demaryius Thomas because they got wind that Dallas was looking to trade up for a wide receiver (Dallas traded up for Dez Bryant but their first choice could've been Demaryius). Xanders was able to convince McDaniels to prioritize Demaryius first and then they'll undertake the Tebow project as they traded up from the 2nd round to pick #25 to get Tebow.

As for Knowshon Moreno that was a mistake. He probably just should've known better. But at the same time, Knowshon has accounted for 1700 yards and 14 touchdowns this year. Sooo....

The 2nd round picks are rough. Rahim Moore and Zane Beadles are starters as is Eddie Royal. I'd say all three are par for that round. Orlando Franklin is significantly above par. Richard Quinn, Alphonso Smith and Darcel McBath are below par. All in all I'd say that's average production out of that round.

On the other hand you're not judged on your college scouting ability JUST by the first two rounds. Consider the Broncos drafting Eric Decker, Kory Lichtensteiger, Peyton Hillis (whom McDaniels traded away for sordid reasons), Perish Cox, Julius Thomas, Quinton Carter, Nate Irving, Derek Wolfe, Malik Jackson, Danny Trevathan.

Add onto that guys like CB Chris Harris Jr. (UDFA), LT Chris Clark (waivers), KR Trindon Holliday (waivers), SS Duke Ihenacho (UDFA), DB Tony Carter (UDFA) and C Manuel Ramirez (waivers).

Those are all guys you grab off waivers or sign as UDFAs that are an extension of the college scouting process. Chris Clark started the whole year at LT in place of an injured Ryan Clady and has positive PFF grades. Chris Harris is legitimately one of the best corners in the league, certainly one of the best slot cornes. Duke Ihenacho is a starter. Manuel Ramirez has started all year and has very good grades from PFF. Trindon Holliday has been a ridiculous return man for them. Tony Carter a nice sub player.

One thing also to keep in mind is Ted Sundquist was fired in March of 2008, and Jim and Jeff Goodman took over the personnel department at that time. They were later fired by Josh McDaniels after having been integral in hiring him. Which is kind of funny and sad. But it made for enemies as both Sundquist and the Goodman family hate Xanders.

Xanders executed the 2009 draft without having revamped the scouting system in Denver yet. That was something to my knowledge he did in the summer of 2009 after the draft. He taught all of the scouts the new grading system and gave them the new process and assignments during that summer. I think the lack of results in the 2009 draft can be partially blamed on that.

I also like Jason Licht. You won't find arguments from me against him.

Gamble is not in the discussion for GM, in the NFL, anywhere. Dude is staying put. As far as Xanders, he impressed enough to become the GM and hold that function, and he delivered.

Kinda funny we are talking about hiring a GM who did a decent job in player acquisition but couldn't see eye to eye with the HC.
