Because Ireland was great at finding us mediocre talent in most areas, not the worst GM, but didn't havethe ability to reach the next level. I know you like him, but he had his chance. Its time to move on. We have been close for a long tine...he had every chance to get there. He didn't.
I love how people point to our last two games and say we're not close but completely ignore that we beat Indianapolis, Cincinnati, San Diego, Pittsburgh and New England. When was the last time we've had that kind of list of impressive wins in one season? And that was with a god awful offensive line. We are close.
So with everything that has happened over the last week or so, does anyone else think that Philbin took a risk and played the "long game", and deliberately tanked the games against the Bills and Jets, with the sole purpose of trying to get Ireland fired.
Because Ireland built one part of the team while destroying another. His job with our O-Line ALONE was a fireable offense.
Its better to have the GM and HCs in step and dancing to the same tune than dancing to different steps and to different tunes, like the Ireland Philbin relationship .Whether it be GM hiring the HC or whether its the HC hiring the GM it should be a symbiotic relationship IMO.
In some of the better franchises, with a long history of stability and success, it's owners who are multi-generational football men. The Maras. The Rooneys. And, by the way, the MAras made it a point to take the Kraft family under their wing when Kraft bought the team. They even lent some football execs to go spend time with Kraft and educate him on how to be a successful football franchise owner. Not coincidentally, the Giants, Steelers and Pats have won 7 of the past 20 Superbowls (in a league of 32 teams). Those three ownership groups have combined for 13 Superbowl appearances in the past 20 years. In fact, of the past 20 Superbowls, only 9 Superbowls didn't involve at least one of those three teams. Who picks GREAT GMs? Owners who DO understand football.
Compared to the general consensus? I was head over heels in love with him . Seriously though, I defended Ireland because IMO he was being vilified unfairly, like everything was his fault, not because I thought he was doing such a great job. But you're right, he's gone now and the show goes on. My main concern is how do we proceed from here? Philbin seems to have gotten his wishes (Ireland gone) while also being reprimanded for sticking with Sherman. It's a strange situation, I'm anxious to see who comes in at OC and GM and how much input Philbin will have, both directly and indirectly.
You probably know more about it than I do, but it seems to me Ireland was let go b/c he and Philbin couldn't see eye to eye and he balked at Ross bringing in an overseer to settle things between them.
The owner always in every instance on every team maintains ultimate authority. They can fire who ever they want at anytime. They own the team. It's what penalty do they want to pay. What is trying to be circumvented is the fact that the Dolphins and Stephen Ross are viewed as a joke. Just look at what has happened since he bought the team. Perception of what "Is" will determine who we get as a GM and or other coaching positions Perception even means more then reality because reality is what someone believe's One thing that CAN NOT be argued is that the Dolphins are dysfunctional add that to the fact that the new GM will not know which way is up and they most likely will want as much control as possible Control apparently Mr Ross has already said they will not have Control that Mr Ross "may" want to hire a football czar for Nope - This position gets filled from with in They will try to interview but it will become painfully obvious Especially when Jeff is done privately to everyone he knows The only way this goes down so that we do not have any more questions is everyone must be fired Ross should realize this but probably will not Promotion from within is a BAD BAD idea.
Prepare to be disappointed unless Tom Gamble weaves magic out of his arse. Which I insist is possible.
LOL Keep telling yourself that His GM quit......wasn't fired And is now talking **** to everyone who will listen about how Aponte is on a power grab Ross's hand will be forced. Clean house or suffer 3-5 more years of mediocrity, maybe more
Well in your own words when you mistakenly believed Ireland to be safe, you lost the fight so it's time to move on.
Maybe if it was the 80s or the 90s. Gamble just has to make a few good moves and if Tannehill improves over this year, Miami is a playoff team. All teams in the NFL are a few good moves and a decent quarterback away from being a playoff team.
Quit? How can we know that. And heaven forbid there be a bitter ex-employee. Unheard of. I'm pretty excited about where we are. I like Tanny and I like Philbin. Some talent added to the mix and we are in decent shape. Anyone know where our points allowed falls league wise? We gave up tons of rushing yards and it seemed like every third and long but they did a decent job on the most important stat, points. That w/ an offense that left them on the field an awful lot. Another good stat is a takeaway in every game. Sweet.
I find it strange that Ross chose to go this route... I suppose he thought that JI would work with him and not take off. While hiring from within is an option, I don't see that as the best option either. Aponte isn't skilled enough as a personnel person and Gaine isn't skilled enough to guide her or run the thing himself either. Aponte is up and coming and in the right situation may be very successful, but not here in this situation. I think she knows this, particularly if she's as sharp as many say. Gaine is also up and coming as has been interviewed once or twice, but this mess has to have tarnished his star somewhat. His best bet is to wait it out, see who comes in and hope that he can fit in and whoever that person is turns this ship around, sooner rather than later, thereby wiping the tarnish off his star... I get the feeling that Ross sorely wants to go outside the box here and get an up and comer from somewhere else, someone not necessarily afiliated with any of these folks, but that could be hard, both Gaine and Aponte are well known in NFL circles... And don't forget that Philbin has feelers out there as well, for someone he could work more easily with. Ross hopefully will make the decision moreso on his own, with his team of 'advisors' rather than letting the underlings get too involved (Philbin, Aponte, Gaine...) The other thing is, when/if an outside person is brought in, who's to say that they want Gaine and Aponte or even Philbin for that matter. Now, Ross may put some stipulations on the board, but those things will be known from the start. Ross believes in a traditional GM, so that person would have those assumed authorities, if not now, at the end of their existing contracts... So, if I'm any of the folks still in the organization, I'm not worried about the reputation they may or may not have right now, but in getting that reputation spiffied back up....
All true... but he also did an awful job with the offensive line..and IMO that should be the reason he was canned.
