Heckert Jr Marc Ross Eric Decosta No particular order. All 3 are very qualified. Heckert had 1 DU I or he'd still be a GM In philly. Decosta and Ross have been on staffs that draft reasonably well, make smart decisions for the most part and have each had 2 Sb runs in the last 10-12 years.
Hire Marino a some head role and we already have our scouting department, which I believe is good. So Marino in the lead role and "face" of the franchise, gaine and his staff scouting and Aponte making the deals. Marino has already praised Philbin this year on tv, so now we just hire an OC...
I'd personally be on board with keeping Brian Gaines and bring someone like Jason Taylor in in some capacity.

Jason La Canfora @JasonLaCanfora18m If the Dolphins run a true GM search, and if the GM is in fact a GM, (with final say and not reporting to some VP) it will be highly coveted. please, Stephen Ross, follow this blueprint.
It has nothing to do with him being a Dolphin or not. I think he will turn be the best QB the Dolphins have had since Marino. I just don't think he will ever be an elite QB. There are very few of those in the NFL. Hopefully he will end up being a much better QB than I see him becoming, but right now that is my view of Tannehill after his first two years as a starting QB in the NFL. I think there are a lot of very average starting QB's in the NFL today who probably will never take their team to a SB and they are not members of the Miami Dolphins.
Ross has this one chance to get it right. He has a good nucleus..a QB most in the league believe to be potential franchise material..a defense with talent...and a reasonable amount of cap space. Get the right guy..and let him decide who the GM and Coach will be. This has to happen. We cannot miss fire on this. Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
I loved Jason Taylor as a player for the Dolphins. I just don't know how him being a former player means that he is qualified to work in the front office of the Dolphins. If it is some PR position, much like Nat Moore's position, I would be alright with that. I just don't see Taylor being someone who could be involved in the player personnel aspects of this team. As far as Gaines is concerned. I hope not and I hope no one presently in the Dolphins player personnel department is promoted to the GM position. It is time Ross looks outside the team organization for a new GM.
as per Barry Jackson this is exactly what Ross is doing. Gaine and Aponte will not be the new GM. I pray this is true.
I think you're right about him not being GM material yet. I wouldn't want him in that role, more of a face. He as always come across as an intelligent person and I think could add something, I could be wrong. I wouldn't promote Gaines either, but I'd love to keep him on. I'm really not informed enough about GM candidates to make an informed decision, but it seems like there will be a lot interested and that should make the process easier.
I think the one year Pennington was the QB of the Dolphins was the best quarterbacking this team has had since Marino retired. Unfortunately he was injured in his second year with the Dolphins and his career ended far too soon. Pennington never had a great arm, but from a mental aspect of the of the game as a QB, he was light years ahead of Tannehill at this stage of Tannehills career. I think Tannehill is a bright guy and with the right QB coach and a great OC, I can see him becoming another Alex Smith type QB. That is about where I see him as a QB in the future. Smith is now a top 15 QB in the NFL and he has turned into a very good game manager. So if Tannehill can get to that same level of competence as an NFL QB, the Dolphins will be a legitimate playoff contender on a regular basis. I just don't know if Smith,or Tannehill will be good enough to take their teams to a SB. We shall see.
Based on the lack of productively by the draft picks in the past three years and especially the 2013 draft picks. I'm not sure how you come to the conclusion that the scouting department has done a good job. The fact is that if the scouting department had done a good job, Ireland would still be employed by the Dolphins right now.
Been talking about him for a while - most of the time it gets crickets or criticism in threads I've mentioned him.
I don't see it as difficult to believe at all. We have a nice talent base with potential top 5 talent at key positions (QB, pass rushers, secondary and C). We have at least good to very good players at WR and TE. Our cap position is very good. And we have an owner who tends to spend money and stay out of the way. I know it's hard to see past the disappointing finishes and the bashers here, but this is a team with the arrow pointed up.
To be fair we know nothing of Gaines. What if you looked back at his history and he had suggested drafting guys like Jimmy Graham, Keenan Allen, and other guys who have turned out well, but was over ruled? I'm not saying I want him as GM. I'm saying we know nothing.
.....then you look back at some of the FA signings that Gaine was greatly responsible for since the NFL scouting department was his area. Smiley, Grove, Gibril Wilson, Ernest Wilford, Bobby Carpenter.
Smiley and Grove weren't bad, they were injured often. Gibril Wilson was the worst. I don't think Wilford and Carpenter got large contracts and I doubt he felt either were NFL starters. They were just what wss available to us.
People around the league have been (reportedly) shaking their head and wondering what was taking so long. If I were a prospective GM, I'd view this as a great situation. Lots of cap room, young QB with great potential, and an owner who doesn't want to pull the trigger on me. What's not to like?
Smiley and Grove had injury histories before Miami. Smiley signed for $25 million to provide us 80 games. He gave us 24 starts. Grove signed for $29 million to provide us 80 games. He gave us 10 starts. Carey re-signed for $42 million to provide 96 games. He gave us 43 starts and looked like crap at end. Wilson signed for $27 million to provide us 80 games. He gave us 14 starts. Wilford signed for $13 million to provide us 64 games. He gave us 3 receptions. Reggie Torbor signed for $14 million to provide us 64 games. He gave us 3 starts. Charlie Anderson signed for $7.5 million to provide us 48 games. He gave us 2 starts. Michael Lehan signed for $5 million to provide us 48 games. He gave us 2 starts and played in 5 total games. We entered 2008 free agency at $44 million under the cap [the highest in the league], yet all we had/have to show for it was Randy Starks [who only took up about $4.5 million that year] and Yeremiah Bell's one year deal at $1.5 million. Where'd the other $38 million disappear to? Within 2 years, all 25 or 26 of those 2008 signings and re-signins were no longer with the team sans Starks & Bell IIRC. Doesn't seem like a very good NFL scouting job by Gaine if you ask me.
My guess (not want) Ross Keeps Gaine on as head of scouting. Aponte is hired as the first woman GM (brings a ton of attention to the organization which Ross loves) Philbin is retained and is given power of personnel OR Ross brings in Eric Mangini as GM Retains Gaine as Head of scouting Philbin is retained and has some say in personnel. And the hell continues
Hell, I'd want Scott Fitterer or Scot McCloughan in for an interview just so that Ross could gain a glimpse into Seattle's organization and the way they do things. Could be a valuable learning experience for Ross if nothing else.
The one thing I've learned from years of posting on forums, listening to sports talk radio and being on twitter is that fans as a whole are really dumb and often have no idea what they're talking about. Too emotional to see things clearly, and that includes me.
YUP Tom Heckert Jr!!! Heckert did a great job with the Browns and was unjustly fired. He worked very well under Reid in Philadelphia. He can bring us in Brad Childress and then we have a viable OC who he can use as a hedge in case Philbin ****s the bed next year. Philbin and Childress run the same system in essence. I wanted Heckert and Childress when we got Saban. It would be something if they figured in returning this team to where it should be.
Considering that Seattle's front office is a branch from the Green Bay front office and runs things similar in the way Green Bay does, and he has a head coach that is familiar with the process in Green Bay, I think Ross probably has a good view on how those teams are run.
