The Miami Herald reports Joe Philbin is "definitely safe" as Dolphins head coach. Owner Stephen Ross forced Philbin to fire OC Mike Sherman on Monday, but Philbin will return for his third season on the job. Per the Herald's Armando Salguero, GM Jeff Ireland's job security "has yet to be cemented by the team."

That is interesting. So Ross likes what Philbin is doing but is still evaluating Ireland

I wouldn't doubt if he gives both a make or break year. Did Ross ever say anything about this past season being critical for Ireland?

    Ofcourse.

If he would've strong armed Joe into firing Sherman, then turned around and fired Philbin?? That would be pretty fked up.

The wells report has something to do with Turner/Ireland regarding Cogs (remember Philbin wanted him gone), and the Martin fiasco.

I think Ireland will be retained through the draft and then immediately replaced before free agency. It just has that smell to me. If you're hiring a GM and not giving that GM the power to fire the coach, I think that's probably the best timing for it anyway.

Free agency is before the draft. If the Dolphins want a good draft, Jeff Ireland cannot have anything to do with that process.

Don't ask me what I'm thinking re: timing. I think I'm thinking of that round of post-draft veteran signings that happens but yes that's not free agency (or not the big part).

I think the way they did this with Casserly involved keeping him on as a figurehead of sorts but constraining his actual power quietly.

Either way, I think we would agree the Dolphins have already started draft prep and the after draft timing is what would minimize any sort of possible scouting disruption, yes?

All due respect, and in the case of one Jeff Ireland, I disagree. Best timing would've been a couple of years ago. But, I'll settle for today as the next best timing.

    Keep on steppin' Jeffy!

Out of Sherman, Philbin and Ireland, I am the least opposed to Philbin staying. So I guess it could work out ok

I understand the scouting process gives Ireland a slight edge to stick around till after the draft, but the other side to that is it gives Ireland an extended chance to screw Philbin even more. If he isn't working WITH Philbin on drafting certain types of players, he can certainly work against him through that process. How can we expect Ireland to FIX the OL for Philbin, when he wouldn't or couldn't do it before now.
    Not worth the gamble.

    Cut him NOW.

Ireland should have been fired 3 years ago . I never despised anyone like Ireland I wonder though what happens next year when go 3-13 or 5 -11 or 7-9 what kind of changes happens if my predictions come true .

if Ireland leaves I predict 8-8 or 9-7 if Ireland stays we will go 7-9 for the hundredth time .

I don't see anything wrong with this. Philbin isn't a horrible coach, but I'm so happy they got rid of Mike Sherman, that guy wasn't doing anything right.

Yeah, I actually am happy about this. I feel like Joe has been taking the team towards the right direction. Firing Mike is probably the most exciting news I've heard in awhile.

Lol So Ireland was so terrible that replacing him will gain us one win in a sport where teams go from the bottom to contending every year.

    Makes total sense.

So in the Interesting News thread let me ask an Interesting Question...

You get control of the Dolphins for one day. You can fire Ireland. However...your only option to replace him with Rick Spielman (the Vikings are willing to make it happen, go with this).

Do you do it? Who was the bigger evil?

To me it is clearly Ireland. During the Wanny/Spielman days, Spielman was always the junior partner in the suck. During the Ireland/whoever days, Ireland has been the senior partner in the suck.
