In each of those situations - it was unrealistic.

Ireland was involved as the GM. He wasn't really giving those guys a great organization or organizational control. And, with Manning - that was a pipe dream.

Praising Ross for going after Manning is about like saying, "Miami tried to offer 3 picks to move from the 20th pick to the 1st pick in the draft." Big deal. There wasn't any hope there.

I think back to the Pats owner Robert Kraft. There is a guy who simply knew what he was doing. He is the anti-Ross.

At the time, I thought, this guy is a bit crazy. Belichick was introduced as the Jets coach, resigned immediately, the Patriots gave him full power (after his slightly above mediocre run as coach of the Browns), and gave up a first round pick in 2000 to sign Belichick. All that seemed a bit crazy to me at the time. But, Kraft made the best decision of any NFL owner in the last 30 years plus.

I just don't see Ross as Kraft.

What if Ross is secretly smart?

What if he realizes that the good coaches and GM candidates are with the winning organizations, and he has to wait until their seasons are over to go after them?

These guys know what they want and will pay for it. They are quick to pull the trigger.

Ross is the opposite, I doubt he knows what he wants hence why his moves are slower than a snail race.

Nice theory except it's possible to fire the current staff in the meantime.

I have a feeling you're right, and Ross is keeping Ireland around just in case, like he did with Sparano during the Harbaugh fiasco

And for the same reason, because the people he goes after may tell him thanks, but no thanks, like Harbaugh, Cowher, Gruden and Fisher.

Get rid of everyone and things will change. Big named coaches will always want their guys. Just like how GMs will want or have the ability to pick their guy for a HC.

There is nothing I've seen in the Club about how much Ross offered or was prepared to offer Harbaugh, compared to what he actually got from SF.

I wouldn't say that the pursuits of Fisher or Harbaugh were unrealistic. I find it difficult for a team to aggressively pursue a coach (while one is still on staff), and knowing the potential backlash, if that FO did not have the feeling he would sign.

I do not think anyone praises the attempts. While nice, they didn't pan out. I merely pose the question: why couldn't they get them on board? While it's speculative, I think we can come up with some good theories.....

Sweet christ...Jason La Canfora reporting that Gus Malzahn is "very much in the mix" for the Cleveland job.

I swear to everything holy if Gus Malzahn leaves for the NFL and the Dolphins never got into the mix because they decided to stick with Joe Philbin...

Luck plays a big role. Did you know that Bill was ready to draft Drew Brees in 2001 in the 2nd round....the year after taking Tom Brady?

So Ross lets his emotions pass, keeps Philbin and Ireland and we move on to next year...Tannehill will progress along with the new LBs and Dion Jordan will get more time.

One more offensive weapon added and we are in the playoffs next year

You have to account for the holes Ireland will create in the roster just to fill the hole he created this year, and then how much he will overpay to fill the hole he created this year.

how can dolphin fans be in this much denial what in hell do you clowns mean that keeping Ireland wont cause any more harm . the damage has already been done .

we have been going nowhere for a long time the Browns have a better chance of making the playoffs next year then we do. the Cardinals used to be a joke but they are more respected team then Miami is and chaotic as the jets are I am not so sure that they wont pass us by too.

we don't scare anyone not OUR QB ,not our Tightends and most certainly not our Running backs . here is why Miami wont win more then 5 or 6 games next year if we keep the *** clowns .

#1 the other teams that do things right already have good gm's and head coaches . the teams that want to succeed will replace their gm's and / or coaches .

#2 by the Time Ross takes action the great or good coaches will already be taken. ( if Ireland and Philbin stays I hope you Ireland apologist will be ready to experience a real bad season next year.)

Last year I came to the unhappy opinion that our owner may be good at real estate, but seemed like a moron when it came to football. Bounced this idea off an NFL owner I met at an event. Guy I respect as his franchise has multiple Superbowl trophies over the last couple decades. He agreed Ross was a dolt.

Nothing this season has changed my opinion.

Even a dolt knows that when you don't know anything about a subject, you have to ask people who do. I think after these two losses, any blind faith that Ross had in the front office and coaching staff is gone, and he's getting advice from outside the organization. My guess is he's weighing options right now. My gut tells me a guy with billions in the bank can't be stupid.

No doubt Brady was great fortune but that's true of a ton of great coach/QB combos. The Dolphins were incredibly lucky that all those QBs went ahead of Marino - who was the best in the class and should have been drafted by the Raiders high in the round. His talent coming out was top 5. So, too, was the luck of Bill Walsh drafting Joe Montana in round 3. Or how about Brees not getting signed by Miami and going to the Saints and Payton? etc. etc.

Belichick also worked some magic winning with Matt Cassell in a year Brady went down in the 2nd week of the season. And, how fortunate has Brady been to have Belichick as his coach?

Rodney Harrison was talking about Belichick the other day on Dan Patrick and noted how he really was different from all other coaches in the details he focused on. Pretty interesting to see.

I've got Drew Brees's book Coming Back Stronger -- unleashing the hidden power of adversity. He talks about the draft in it

    From the book:

I misquoted it. NE actually considered him in the 1st round. They took Richard Seymour, but the fact that they were considering Brees shows that they really didn't know what they had in Brady at the time.

You want something that will sting you though:

I've been thinking about this, and it wouldn't shock me. To me, it might depend on what they think Taylor's upside is and whether they think Carroll can keep improving enough to re-sign.

If being a dolt was a prerequisite for winning a Super Bowl then we should have far more by now.
