Not sure. Ross obviously has final say, but I would think that Ireland played a large role in the process. If Carl Peterson was the one who decided, then all this is obviously a moot point.
I agree. Nick Saban used the term "consistency of performance" a lot when he was in Miami. That is a talent issue, not a coaching issue.
Just going to go out on a limb and say that not putting Daniel Thomas 1v1 with a DT will help protect the QB. That would be a start before even getting into the rest of the protection calls.
Running backs are asked to make that block all the time. The scheme isn't the issue. The issue is the fact that Thomas cannot block.
Sure, there might be a few mitigating circumstances (coaching, scheme) regarding the following topics but at the end of the day, I don't know how anyone can come to the conclusion that Ireland doesn't deserve the lions share of the blame when it comes to: A) The linebacker swap this past offseason B) The current state of the offensive line The numbers speak for themselves. A colossal swing and miss on the personnel side of the organization.
The league is filled with RBs that can't make that block consistently. That is why the league consistently keeps in more blockers than players rushing the passer. Except Miami, who refuses to consistently give help where its needed.
What really is strange about the linebacker swap is how unnecessary it seemed. My criticism at the time was yes, it LOOKS like you're adding these players who made plays and are younger than Dansby and Burnett, but they made those plays on other teams in other systems and you've never seen them coached by your coaches in your system on your team with your teammates. The bottom line was they accepted RISK in order to reach for YOUTH. ...and by all means it looks like they got burned for it. It would be all the more palatable if they got cheaper while getting younger, in exchange for accepting such risks. But they didn't. They maintained the amount of investment in the unit. Actually they increased it, by giving an extention to Misi. Which by the way continues to not make sense within the context of the "what the hell are we going to do with Dion Jordan since it's become obvious the coaches like Olivier Vernon more for whatever reason" conundrum.
This. This is the part that blows my mind. In no other walk of life does an individual take on additional risk without being compensated in some fashion. The compensation in this particular case SHOULD HAVE BEEN salary relief. To put this in another light, Jeff Ireland essentially invested in a publicly-traded entity while agreeing to be compensated at an interest rate equivalent to that of a T-bill.
Next time Buffalo is in Miami, it would be cool if someone called in a bomb threat to their hotel at 3am.
We need to come up with a really creative way of keeping them awake all night. Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
I don't remember a tremendous amount of opposition to swapping linebackers when it was done. Certainly not as many people whom are now finding it so baffling.
I was very surprised by the move, because I considered our starting trio from last year as a team strength. I tried to be optimistic about the decision though. Give Jeffy the benefit of the doubt. After all, he is a professional GM, and I am merely a humble fan. At this point however, the moves look like an unmitigated disaster, and it has nothing to do with Dansby having a great season in Arizona. Even if he played at last year's level, he'd still be head and shoulders better than Ellerbe has been so far.
This is asinine. Aside from the fact that, you know, no one on this board has one percent of the resources at their disposal that Jeff Ireland does to properly evaluate a personnel decision, we're not being paid outrageous sums of money to make these decisions, either. This is a results based business, like every other for profit business on planet earth (something everyone on this board has experience with at some point in their lives) and the results speak for themselves. If we failed so miserably in an aspect of our daily duties, you can bet your *** we'd hear about it on our performance reviews. At the end of the day, Jeff Ireland should be evaluated and critiqued in the context of his peers and colleagues, not a group of fans on a message board that have the benefit of hindsight. And if we take that approach, it ain't pretty. Give me a break. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
One problem with Ireland is his cheapskate, lowball attempts to get free agents for way under what the market dictates, which results in free agents not signing and the holes and deficiencies going unfilled. You saw the result last Sunday in Buffalo. It did not take a genius to see before the season started that the offensive line was a train wreck. He did nothing except bring in the fourth- or fifth-choice guy, Tyson Clabo, and be self-satisfied because of all the cap room he saved. Now he needs all that cap room to re-sign our good guys, and still has to address the offensive line, his epic-fail linebackers, and running back, at a minimum.
Don't know. It may be a combination of both of them when it comes to free agent signings. I remember free agents (Long, Flynn, Albert) commenting during the preseason that Ireland (by name) had lowballed them.
I agree that the credibility of our assistant coaches is a viable argument for our offenses failures, but that doesn't mean that Ireland deserves less blame.
So when we look up this season and last season's head coach it will say Jeff Ireland 15-16 That's absurd. Wins and losses are owned by Philbin. I get it. You guys want to blame Jeff Ireland for everything. The truth is there is plenty of blame to go around. Please please look up our coaching staff. They have almost no experience. It is actually shocking. Why would Philbin be allowed to put together a coaching staff that has no experience? Ryan Tannehill is being coached by 2 QB coaches who have 3 yrs exp as back up college players and zero NFL Exp.......WTF How do we win like this.....it is across the board This could be a different story if we had someone with years of HC exp. But we don't. Our HC is in his first yr as well. Given the circumstances surrounding these facts it is amazing we have progressed at all.
It's called leadership and we don't have any. And please don't give me this crap that it's Ireland's fault. Please. Our HC is not a leader of Men...period Leadership = confidence = swagger = wins
I think Carl Peterson was all up in our ****. I also think Ireland was given his "tasks" and they didn't include Hiring Joe Philbin and his staff. I also don't believe Philbin would have come here and had zero say about what was happening, he hired his assistant's. It's Ireland's job to supply the talent. That's it. That Simple. What is disturbing is I believe everyone stays this year. Excuses will run their course and "maybe next yr" will become this franchise's story yet again. The line will be rebuilt and will be used as our excuse. Why else would the Buffalo game go down like it did.
not true Swagger was used by Mike Tyson all the time. Tyson's swagger had half his opponent's beat before they ever stepped in the ring swagger=confidence Confidence in one's ability to succeed allows New England to pull out wins that they have no business winning https://www.facebook.com/TonyRobbins
Imo the team is still being put together. What I was looking for was a significant improvement over last year and I've seen that. With a few tweaks I think this team can string together several winning seasons.
What does that have to do with anything? Many good to great coaches have no nfl or college experience.
Lol is this a joke? Last year we averaged 311.5 yards/game, this year 314.1 yards. yards per play: 5.1 last year, 5.0 this year. points per game: 18.0 last year, 20.7 this year. Defense: 19.8 pts/game last year, 21.0 this year. Yards given up: 356.8 a game last year, 358.4 this year. some players have regressed big time, like Rashad Jones, some players have improved dramatically, like Tannehill, Clay, Vernon...but no, the team as a whole hasn't gotten much better.
Is Ireland, raw? Yes he is. But the reality is he has not had a fair chance to put this team together. Come on guys, he was under Tuna's thumb and now he's got Joe Philbin. A coach he most likely did not pick. A coach who has zero experience who has surrounded himself with guys with even less experience......geez
I agree. I am just not sure if it can be done in the time needed before this fan base revolts. Good lord, Joe Philbin and staff are a joke. I guess next year they are veterans though. Maybe year 3 is the charm. Lets just hope it's not yr 5 or 6. Talk about learning on the job....geez
It has everything to do with everything. QB. The most important position on the team. A position that we have needed since 1999. Almost everyone agrees with this fact. We draft a guy who really was a wide receiver and bring him in. Then we surround him with the most inexperienced cast possible. Doesn't make sense. And no Matt Moore is not qualified for Tannehill to be his Mentor. This single fact screams incompetence. It also tells me Ireland had no say about the coaches. Ireland has made mistakes, but even he is not that incompetent. His career revolves around this one single pick. No way he personally allows Tannehill to be coached by these two guys.
I didn't oppose swapping out Burnett for Wheeler since there was a style issue in terms of what Kevin Coyle needs in his defense. In fact as I recall, I suggested swapping out Burnett for a player that might fit Coyle's defense better and your reaction to it was to accuse me of doing that out of nothing more than sheer boredom. I also could have gotten behind a swap at MLB, on an individual basis. What I did explicitly oppose was executing both swaps at the same time. Too much risk, not enough reward, same money.
My excuses? Really? Person's on this board are so dead set to blame Jeff Ireland for everything that most objectivity is out the window. Consider this: People want to Blame Ireland yet Ireland has NEVER had complete control. Which is why like it or not he will be here next year Has he supplied the talent - no argument here But he had no say over Sparano and has no say over Philbin. Simply put, He in theory is "captain of the ship", yet his rudder's stuck and he only can turn right........give me a break
ok, first you are driving me crazy with this answer first then quote thing. our head coach is actually in his second year and our staff is relatively in tact from last year. the head and assistant all have multiple years coaching experience. as for Sundays debacle that was a total team let down. but the general state of talent on this team ultimately rests with one person and that is the GM. and he most assuredly is responsible for the fiasco that is our team. that over all won/loss record is as much if not more a reflection of what the GM has put on the field for the coaches to work with.
