I had the Dolphins drafting Alshon Jeffrey as well.

As far as Martin goes....maybe a throw-in as part of a draft day deal.

I rthink if our FO had any sense they would tell JM's agent to find a suitor and then start to work a deal. at this point i don't think anyone would bite otherwise

Usually it is more a contract for contract thing trying to avoid the cap hit.

Find a draftee who has disappointed, but waiving outright would cost to much, and swap players and hope the guy pans out.

Real question is how much value we have to give up, for example we may have to take a larger cap number to trade him b/c of his on the field and off the field issues

Miami will have about $1 million in dead money when they release Martin.

This is why I'm hoping it's a contract for contract situation, which makes sense for both teams

Interesting thing you propose here, Pads. In effect, find another bust who has not responded to coaching and do a cap-neutral swap-o'-busts in the hope that the one we acquire can be rehabilitated?

Sounds brilliant. Seriously. The only problem I see is that this is more than a matter of two busts. Martin is a bust, but he also walked out on the team in the middle of the season, he's a litigation risk, and he's a psychological square peg in a round hole in the NFL. His upbringing, education, parents and view of the world aren't going to change. The other team would be taking a bigger risk than just his being a bust, and if he has to be released after the trade, the other team takes the cap hit then.

Wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole.

Exactly, fair market value, if we can pull a bust 3rd rd pick out of him we'd be doing quite well

If we could time his 40 time running to his lawyer at a sub 5. For a tackle al Davis would trade 2 firsts! He loved speedsters.

Russell Wilson?...But in all seriousness what about josh leRibeus in Washington. He was their 3rd round selection (a guard from smu) and I believe he hasn't even suited up for them this year. Why not swap if you can? At least get a body in for 2014 to add some competition to the OL.

Talk about not having leverage in a trade...bad player, 100% chance he is released, not to mention a big wimp. Silly statement

This is good. Being put on the clearance rack at the dollar store and no-one STILL doesnt buy you, let's you know exactly where you stand with NFLteams. Perp walk of NFL players. Next is the waiver wire!

For such a smart guy, Stanford classics major and all, Martin could have handled everything differently from throwing a tantrum and running away. As it is, he hung an "I'm emotionally unstable" sign on himself. Guess he really doesn't care about his career in the NFL, which is part of the problem.

I don't think players and coaches will want him. A GM may take a swipe at him, but I think he broke the biggest code by talking about the locker room AND walking out on his teammates. I don't think we get anything for him to be honest, but some desperate GM will pick him up after we cut him.

  26. The only thing the team can hope for is finding someone who thinks that taking over Martins contract is cheaper than waiting it out and signing him after he is released. Pads could be correct in that a team may see value in a trade if they have what they deem as a bad signing and want to rid themselves of that burden to help offset Martins remaining money on his contract. It seems like an unlikely scenario because of Martins reputation but you cant really blame Ireland for floating the idea out there. If nobody bites on it, the team is going to be on the hook for the cap hit and nothing to show for it. It will be wasted team resources.

It is somewhat interesting that its being floated out there prior to the conclusion of the investigation.

well, if / when... Ireland is dismissed. He'll likely land somewhere else (back in Dallas as an underling to the Joneseses?) Then we could trade Martin to his team?

Ireland wont be let go this offseason, rightfully so, and by nrxt season when we judge him further Martin will be gone.

  31. Ireland is on the phone now with the Jets, entertaining swapping with them for Gino Smith :couch:

This may be nothing more than a legal play by the Dolphins to establish that Martin value.

If Miami was to orchestrate a trade, I could see a team unloaded an injury prone player, which would balance out the risk of taking on Martin.

We were able to trade Milner for Troy Drayton. Good luck getting anything for Martin. Andrew Greene was probably a worse 2nd rounder than Martin though.
