So are you crediting him with Odrick ? I thought fatass was making all the picks back then, and Ireland was the coffee and donut boy.

he will if the research shows exactly what he's responsible for and what he isn't in terms of acquisitions..which I'm sure people in the field would be privy to know..

If I'm starting A team my main concerns for my GM is scouting talent abilities...I could give a rats *** if he isn't media savvy or has good hair....if his record shows that he had a good percentage and those players were good players, not just starting players on a bad team, that's how I hire the position...unfortunately none of us know exactly what he is and isn't responsible, all we have is when Parcells left.
The NFL is about aquiring talent in the most efficient way possible..always has, always will be.

just realized this means we'll be relying on Jeff Ireland to completely revamp our offensive line....

I think I'd rather rely on Casey Anthony to babysit.

2 and 3 point losses as in the latter 3 games are not suffering routes.

This is one thing we definitely agree on. No coach, not even Lombardi, could win with marginal talent.

Ireland has nothing to do with personnel acquisition and talent procurement? He isn't terrible at it, but his drafting acumen, especially in rounds 2 and 3, has been very disappointing to me. I honestly think several of us here could have made better draft choices than he has. I'm not talking about 6 months or a year later hindsight either. Right at the time the call is made, if you do like I do, and make a mental note of whom you would have taken at that point, then compare your hypothetical choices with the actual ones a few years or months later, do you ever say to yourself, "well it was a good thing I was not doing the drafting." ? I sure as heck don't. I have a a fraction of the info on the players that he does. All of us do. So how he comes to make the choices he does are often nothing short of mind boggling.

Thompson took over in 2005 the same year Rodgers was drafted. Loomis was in NO two years before Brees was signed. So that statement is totally incorrect.

Where would we be right now, if Ireland had taken Alshon Jeffery in the 2nd last year instead of Martin, then had no need to make a big UFA WR signing this year, and been able to afford to keep Long? After trading Marshall and not replacing him in free agency, WR should have been a high priority in the 2012 draft. I cannot fathom how any team's draft board could have rated Martin ahead of Jeffery.
A lot of us were surprised and upset at the time when a round later, Ireland bypassed T.Y. Hilton to take Egnew too. I think Egnew is developing into a decent player, but my gawd, Tannehill could have a WR duo of Jeffery and Hilton right now.

I have no doubt whatsoever that Philbin is a much better coach than Ireland is a GM.

If you think our OL personnel fit a zone scheme as a group, then you must be watching a team other than Miami.

  15. MrClean

    MrClean Inglourious Basterd Club Member

So, 20% of the OL is ideally suited for a zone scheme. 40% if Brenner continues to develop and remains a starter, and he was on the PS for most of the season, exposed to every team in the league, which tells you what Ireland thought of him. When he gets promoted to the 53, he becomes an immediate starter over the backups who've been on the team all season to that point, which tells you what the coaches think of Brenner. Since he has been a pleasant surprise in his performance since being promoted, it looks like the coaches were right.

Reid inherited a lot of talent. The team was just poorly coached in 2012. It was unprecedented that KC in 2012 had about as many Pro Bowl players as they did relative to their record. I'd think any objective observer would say Reid had a stronger 53 going into this season than Miami did.

Or, you have no valid counterpoint to a very valid question about a GM whose only possible employer in that position is the Miami Dolphins. No other team would hire him.

Ireland has not only missed on all of his first round picks but he even moved up to #3 to miss.
He has let go of a ton of players who are playing great for other teams.
Every supporter points to Grimes. Grimes was coming off injury and nobody wanted to touch him. Pure luck is not a skill. Furthermore Davis, Marshall, Dansby, Barnett, Smith and Long are all having great years.
Ireland spent time replacing good players he already had. Instead, he should have been drafting to fill holes.
Who lets go of a top 3 wide receiver and then doesn't draft or sign one? and then after doing that lets go of a top 5 LT and doesn't draft or sign one?
How is that not complete incompetence?

To be fair, I think all the evidence says that it was Philbin's call to get rid of Marshall. It was stupid, whoever made the decision.

First he hasn't missed on EVERY acquisition. Marshall was not a bad acquisition. He played well enough for two years, but the off field antics and usurpment of the staff in the locker room took it's toll. Marshall's illness and it's discovery is not on Irish, but on Marshall. Dansby is a competent player, but getting younger, more athletic players in his place was needed. Burnett is not having a great year, just another journeyman year, as he had with us for several. Long was never going to re-sign here. For reasons only he knew, he was leaving this team of is own volition, and the injury situation he'd gotten into was Ireland's fault ?? Smith was and is very inconsistent. So, DJordan is officially a bust ?? After 13 games ?? Hmmmm... I guess we'll have to really wait and see about that... Marshall was last offseason, not this offseason...This year, he aqcuired Wallace to replace him.

The guy has made his mistakes, but this team is better than it arguably was 4 yrs ago. The problem with Irish is that for every hater that points to Marshall, the opposite side can say Wallace. And the fact is that IF we get into the POs somehow, and the results of the Martin bunk are found to be what they appear to be, then he'll be here next year. That is Ross' decision, not ours.

I'm not as much a supporter as I am a realist and the reality is that Ross has made that decision... And if there is any decision to make in January, it'll again be Ross making it... My money is that he'll make the same decision...

    let's say that's true.
Didn't Ireland then have a priority, number one responsibility to replace him????

Don't forget that Philbin wanted to get rid of Icognito too and he was overridden by Ireland.

So many opinions that do not match fact at all I cannot even reply to all of it.
Long was not offered a contract from the Dolphins close to what he got. What is a top 5 LT worth?
Ireland didn't bring in Marshall, that was Parcells. You cannot give the tuna credit when you feel like it and blame when you feel like it.
Dansby is worlds better this year than Ellerbe. The PFF stats don't lie.
Wheeler is also no better than Burnett. Just a lot more expensive.
Why must we learn nothing from Ireland/Parcells running Taylor and Thomas out of town for lesser talent?
It didn't work then and it doesn't work now.
As for younger. Who cares? in todays NFL teams don't keep players that long anyway.
And Wallace????? 60 million dollars???? The steelers knew he wasn't worth that. Now the Dolphins do too.

Vernon was also drafted by Ireland in case you don't know.. in the third round. I'm not defending Ireland, but what you're saying is just ridiculous. He might not be a top 10 or even top 15 GM in the league, but he's not as bad as you're making him out to be, especially in the scouting/drafting department.

You may not like PFF's stats but they are 100% accurate.
    And,
Parcells was in charge when they signed Marshall.
And Wallace is getting 60 million.
    Oh,
And getting rid of JT was a mistake they immediately
    regretted.

Point was that Philbin doesn't get what he wants. The Marshal decision was not Philbin's alone.

It's bad phrasing, what I meant to communicate is that they suffered huge momentum swings within the course of the game that either put them in a big hole, or put the game in doubt.

Regardless, it's certainly not a talent issue.

What is this, exactly? If you're trying to suggest I'm being contradictory, you're barking up the wrong tree. I've said all along that attributing the decisions 2008 to 2010 to Ireland doesn't really change things either way. There's really no reason to "blame" anything on Parcells, because what happened really wasn't something that requires blame.

First of all, I have little problem with PFF's stats. I'm not arguing whether the Ellerbe/Wheeler moves were good.

Here's where you're really off base:

    1) Claiming Ireland has "missed on all his first round picks" is just stupid, whether you think Jordan is a bust or not.
    2) The evidence is clear Long was offered a contract quite close to what the Rams offered. And while he's playing very well this year, he had a couple of years prior to that where he wasn't close to a top 5 tackle. You can certainly criticize Ireland for perhaps not doing a bit more to sign Long, but it's unfair to kill the guy when Long had valid questions about his long term viability.
    3) Ireland sure as hell did bring in Marshall. In fact he did an interview right after stating he had to sell the idea to Parcells.
    4) Getting rid of Thomas and Taylor, both past their prime, was not a poor decision. They were at the end of their careers and pretty much subsequently proved they had little left in the tank. In fact, trading Taylor for a 2nd and a 6th was a great move that was ultimately wasted.

Like I said, I'm not Ireland fan. But it does the discourse little good if you're pulling poorly informed "facts" out of your arse.

2 statements and I am not going to respond anymore-
If they were not going to pick a tackle they could have franchised Long for this year. No offer would have made a difference.
Jordan is not starting and if he is the pick than franchising Starks was not needed.

Franchising Long, taking into consideration his injury questions, declining play and the amount of the franchise tag, would have been incredibly stupid at the time. What you're engaging in is the ultimate definition of 20/20 hindsight.

Not sure why you're making some connection between Starks and Jordan. They don't play the same position and it certainly doesn't take into account the various ways the staff uses Jordan.
