Can we call Ryan Tannehill a franchise QB at this moment in time? I'm not 100% sure. But based on how he has progressed from last season to this season I think it's very reasonable to say, yes, Ryan Tannehill is Miami's franchise QB. If he keeps progressing there's no telling how high his ceiling is. OP mentions TD/INT ratio. The fact that that particular mark is on the right side of 1 is HUGE. First time in a long time we've had a QB throw for more TDs than INTs. That ratio correlates so highly with winning and losing in this league. Don't want to jinx it though, still a few games left... (knock on wood).
It's too early to tell who will have the better career. At this moment in time, it clearly looks like RT, but if you ask this question last year at the end of the season everyone would have told you RGIII. Things change from year to year. Too often as fans we assume that the current trend will continue indefinitely.
Our sophomore QB is on the verge of doing things that a Dolphins QB hasn't accomplished since the 90s. 2013 - Tannehill, 62%+ passing for 3,315+ yards and 20+ TDs. Last time that happened was 2001. 2001 - Fiedler, 60% passing for 3,290 yards and 20 TDs with 19 INTs. Prior to that: 1998 - Marino, 58% passing for 3,497 yards and 23 TDs with 15 INTs. Hard to believe how long it's been since we had even average QB play or a guy who could win games for us. Marino's last "Marino Type" season was 1994...
Hennehill never threatens to score. When offense walks on the field, you're thinking, here comes Tanehill we better have some luck. How is he franchise?
The Ravens were worse than we currently are going into the draft, but then almost miraculously their OL gelled. IMO that would be a necessary key for us as well heading into a game against Denver.
You do realize that Tannehill is tied for 11th in the NFL for Touchdown passes, and #10 in passing yards. Never threatening to score? Sounds pretty dramatic to me. Do we need to score more touchdowns? Absolutely and that is on our QB (who is improving), but play calling effects our round zone offense. Give the kid a line and a consistent run game and I'll take him for the enxt few years and watch him grow. He's a top 10 pick who isn't failing, not sure if he can be classified as Franchise but he is your guy now. Need to build around him.
See every QB in the NFL. You're really reaching with your bias against him to knock him at every opportunity.
I'm still not completely sold on Tannehill. I think that's fair. He's had some up's and some down's. He still has some shortcoming's connecting on big plays. Yesterday he played great. It's really easy to post these after win, as easy as it's to post he sucks after he doesn't play well. I'm not sure if isn't just a guy that will show up in the stat category, but never win (i.e. Jay Cutler, Tony Romo). I just want him to limit mistakes, play well on 3rd downs, play well in the 4th quarter, lead his offense to points/TD's. Do those things well and you should win ball games. Yesterday, he played well. He surprised me. The whole team did. For the first time in a long time, we traded TD's with a team, scored more than 30 pts (all on offense, due to the offense), on the road, in snow, came back in the 4th quarter, and won! It's been a very long time since one of those things happened, let alone all at once. I'm cautiously optimistic and hoping for the best. But, it's right about now when Tannehill has a stinker. He gets you going in his direction then takes the steps back. Then we find 101 different reasons why it isn't his fault. If he wants to turn my head and the fans heads, he needs to do it the entire month of December.
Have some luck? 2 questions: How old are you and what QB has been your favourite since 2000? ( if you got out of your toddler buggy to remember)
Well no crap. But in response to someone that was rationalizing his interceptions at the end of games, you have to take that into account. How is that reaching? He's simply had some interceptions due to situation that he wouldn't have. However, he's also had a fair share of interceptions that were dropped. That's not being biased. That's having an objective opinion. You should try.
I didn't read the thread as someone trying rationalize his INTs, but simply point out the obvious in that a portion of all INTs are bad luck or not the result of poor QB play. Stuff happens in the course of a game. What I was stating with my comment was that you always take anyone saying something positive about Tannehill to task for doing so. The kid was 5 of 8 for 40 yards and a TD in the 4th Qtr against Pittsburgh and brought us back for the come from behind win, a place we haven't won in since 1990. Tannehill is putting up numbers we haven't had from a QB since the 90s. We're on the verge of our first winning season since 2008, or 2005 if you want to discredit the wildcat season as an anomaly as some do. So understand the excitment and cut guys a break for being excited right now and rooting for Tannehill.
If you are talking about Dan Marino like franchise qb, i'd say he is not. But if you are talking about some guy like Joe Flacco or Jay Cutler, i'd say yes. I don't think he is gonna be legendary qb. But IMO theres plenty of room for development for him. He needs exprience as qb and better protection with right coaching staff...
I'm convinced now..he is going with the reverse Mojo technique. Keep on hating Dez!!! Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
Give Tannehill some of the olines Marino had....could get scarey...if your a Pats Jets or Bills fan Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
One of the best things Shula did in my time as a fan was draft Webb and Simms together in 1990. Starting Pro Bowl LT and starting LG for about a decade.
RT makes mistakes, but he is also a very young raw qb. Mistakes will happen, but what's the overall big picture? As an example see Manning vs Blt last year champ game, thru a bad pass back to the middle, picked off game over go home Denver. Point? No qb is perfect and if u are looking to see that u never see those again, you won't like tannehill, but then there should not be one you like cause they all do. Brady is Brady because he doesn't usually when it counts but he is one of a kind
In no way can you say he is or isn't a franchise QB. It's too early, you can't judge him on this one season, or last season. Just chill, sit back, and wait. Just remember people saying "at least we don't need to worry about the QB position this offseason" in regards to Henne after a solid (but mediocre/unremarkable) 2009 (and maybe after 2010 as well) season. Don't jump to any conclusions positive or negative right now.
According to this article statistically he's Top 10. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...nehills-quiet-rise-becoming-noisy-in-december How could he not be the francise QB? He's putting up better numbers than several "franchise QBs"
I agree with this, but I feel he needs to continue the good play a bit longer, and get to the playoffs a couple of different seasons, in order to dispel all doubts. If he can finish this season as strong as the last games, get to the playoffs, and continue his good form next season in route to another playoff birth, then he'll be without a doubt.
He had some issues earlier this year, no doubt. But those are being ironed out beautifully. The strides he's making right now are just fantastic, and he's playing lights out at the right time of year. The last two games did it for me. I'm sold on him a the franchise QB.
Ok fine, when is the official ok time to call it? Next year, tomorrow, when his career is over? He's franchise right now. No question.
Not yet. Not quite yet. When you see a team score and are like..eh..Tannehill will get it back...like no big deal. When the announcers go..they scored to fast..they left to much time for Tannehill. When the other teams fans all collectively go.."Dear god...somebody stop this guy"...then he will be franchise Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
To me Tannehill has showed me enough that I think it would be a waste of resources to bring in competition for Quarterback next season.
http://www.miamidolphins.com/multim...Patriots/aa295723-53ad-4602-8fdc-215ed7b7ba68 That first pass to Matthews in the highlight is a beaut.
Come on brady archieved that in 6 years..look up who is the best qb from the 2012 draft class besides wilson
Mark Sanchez looked as good as Tannehill has been in his first two years. He's proven he deserves to be the unquestioned starter... Franchise is that next step. He's proven that he can lead a team down the field in a two minute drill. He's continuously worked to improve the most glaring weaknesses in his game. Pocket presence, turnovers, staring down receivers. But he has to win a playoff game or two, make a Pro Bowl or two to move into franchise territory IMHO. QBs slide down a scale that Starts at Greatest of All Time: Dan Marino Arguably the greatest of all time. QB Legend HOF QB Elite QB PRO Bowl QB Franchise QB. Unquestioned Starter. Solid Starter. Starter. Career backup. Promising QB. And finally, 1st round pick by the New York Jets.
I know what you mean here. I'm confident when Tanny drops back, but not so much knowing we need a TD on the next drive. Still, to me you are describing "elite" moreso than "franchise". Good QBs are hard to come by. I'd call Tanny our franchise QB at this point, knowing how hard it's been to even find a QB that is not being second guessed every week.
Very well said. Completely agree. He is going in the right direction, that's for sure. If he improves his mental game in reading defenses; continues to grow in confidence and gets an OL that blocks well - he could well be on his way to becoming one.
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk 2 That is completely and utterly false. Sanchez posted a 63 and 75 rating hood first two years and nowhere near as good of numbers. He only looked as good if you were a delusional jets fan or couldn't tell that his defense and run game carried him to those AFC title games
I completely agree. Sanchez was on a really good team but he was not good. He wasn't even close to where Tannehill is.
I personally already see him as a franchise QB. I just want to see a little more out of him like making quicker coverage reads, getting the ball out a little faster and a little better deep ball. So far the movement in the pocket has improved markedly. I'm happy with what I'm witnessing. I just want to see him take it to another level. Already his pre-snap reads, formation recognition, blitz recognition and protection adjustments are very good.
